Rice cereal?

My ds had his four month checkup yesterday. The doctor said that he could start rice cereal, veggies and fruit. The problem is we are clueless on where to where to start, how often to feed this to him, etc. I hate calling the doctor's office since the staff is so rude. Can anyone help me? TIA.

Re: Rice cereal?

  • I'm with you! Check out wholesomebabyfoods.com. They have a schedule & it talks about what foods to start with & how to prepare them if you want. We started avocado last night. I think I will do it once a day for a few nights for "dinner" & then introduce something else for in the morning for "breakfast"

  • DD loved the rice & oatmeal but it constipated her so we are stopping that. I may introduce a little with a fruit for breakfast later on.
  • DS has been eating rice cereal for about 2 weeks now.  We started giving him 1 tablespoon mixed with formula (soupy consistency) at lunchtime.  Then we give him his regular bottle.  I've just started giving him the same serving at dinner time a few days ago.  He's really starting to get the hang of it now.
  • My pedi just told us to start with rice cereal, then (this part I had never heard with #1, but to move to Oatmeal cereal a week later, then Barley cereal another week later). #2 is on the oatmeal cereal right now because we think the rice backed him up :)

With #1 we started veggies (peas I believe) after he had already been on cereal for awhile.

    We started fruits last.

The general recommendation is to try one new food at a time.

  • We did something very similar with DS.  We did about 5 days of each before moving on to the next thing. Spacing helps to determine possible allergic reactions to foods. On the veggies we started with the yellows (squash, sweet potato, carrots) before moving to the greens.  3 meals a day, just breastmilk for snacks.  I hope to do the same for DD.
