Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Notice something about reflux posts

I'm starting to realize that my boys have had these "episodes" that we always called reflux, and I realized on all these reflux posts thru the weeks, that NO ONE else has ever described this. I'm starting the think I've described this wrong to the doctors.

Have any of your reflux babies had this:

Stiffen up completely and start screaming a scream you've never heard while formula pours out of their nose and mouth and this episode causing them to stop breathing momentarily since formula is coming out everywhere. And sometimes this "episode" lasts a few minutes while they fight the contents down in their throat. We always call them reflux attacks in the house (and they are SCARY). They've slowed down big time in the last month (the boys used to get them often a few months ago).

I'm nervous that these weren't just "reflux attacks" (if there is such a thing) - is this aspiration? Any experiences???

  • i discussed this with my pedi.  he said that babies actually "close" thier throats when this happens.  he said that babies can protect thier lungs (what goes in them) much better than adults.
Finally after 15 months and 2 IUI's we have our gorgeous baby boy! Born Nov. 13th @ 9:09am after 29 hours of labor! 6 lbs 1 oz 20 inches long Lilypie Third Birthday tickers My little angel born Jan 9th, 2010 at 9:54pm after 25 hours of labor! 7lbs 4 oz 20 inches long Lilypie Second Birthday tickers
  • My DD has silent reflux but she has had milk come out her nose a couple of times and she definitely chokes a little bit when this happens.  I haven't noticed if she stiffens but probably due to being scared from it happening maybe or in pain possibly.  It has only happened twice to her, but when her reflux is not under control she definitely screams and cried a different cry than normal. Not sure if that helps or not.

  • I've described these attacks..but I feel like I described them wrong. We obviously see a ped g.i. at childrens hosp extensively for Jax (his reflux has cause massive vomiting leading to FTT and now has a g-tube). Thankfully these attacks have REALLY calmed down like the doc said they would...just have been wondering lately if its always what we thought it was. I KNOW it was reflux...but was the reflux causing aspiration? hmm...I will have to discuss at our next g.i. appt coming up.
