R/P from 6-12 - if your DC has ear tubes...

I thought that there might be more kids with tubes on this board...

Are there rules about swimming? I just scheduled the consult with the ENT to discuss the surgery. The consult isn't until 2/12 and Adam is scheduled to start swimming lessons on 2/22 and they go six weeks. Did any of your kids have swimming restrictions after surgery?

  • I replied on 6-12 before I saw that you XP'd it!

DD got tubes put in a few days before Christmas.  Until the post-op appointment the Dr. wanted me to limit her exposure to water.  For baths we needed to use plugs in her ears.  They never specifically said "no swimming" but I  don't really see swim lessons as limiting exposure.

Now that she's been cleared we don't need to use plugs for baths or the pool.  The only time she'll need them is for the ocean or lake.

  • DD has tubes.  Prior to the surgery, there was no water restrictions.  Now that she has them, she is to have no water in her ears.  Until she gets fitted for her ear plugs, we use cotton balls and vaseline at bath time.  After she gets her ear plugs, she will need to use them for baths and swimming since she can't have any water in her ears.
  • No restrictions for swimming but she can't go under more than, what, 3' or 5'.  I can't remember exactly as I didn't plan on a diving career at 1YO.  Either way, it wasn't going to be an issue for swimming.  Talk to your dr as it can depend on the size of tubes they have to use.

  • For my son, the ENT said water was not an issue at all and there was no need to keep it out. I guess it depends on the type/size of the tube and the age of the kid (like the pp said, no diving for my ds).
