Charlie's Soap?

I bought some of this from a baby store in our town, because I'm trying out cloth diapering. The woman there told me that she loves this stuff, and uses it on all of her clothes as well as her diapers because it makes them "feel cleaner." I had no idea what "cleaner" felt like, but thought that sounded interesting so I tried it out on a load of laundry.

Well, not only did it not "feel cleaner," it made all my clothes feel really rough and old! It was like that 1 time in the wash had the same effect as 500 times. I rewashed later with All Free and Clear, which is what I normally use, and they returned to normal. I thought maybe I had imagined it (though I don't know why I would), but yesterday I was doing laundry again and noticed a couple things that had been left over on the drying rack from last time. I picked one of them up and immediately realized that it felt rough, and remembered about the Charlie's Soap.

So, my question is, does this happen to you too or do you feel like Charlie's Soap makes your clothes feel cleaner. Or do you not use it on your normal laundry because that is stupid and no one with any sense would ;) Am I doing something wrong? It just seems so strange that it would have such an immediate and strong affect on my clothing.

  • I feel the same way! My Sun Seedlings, which used to be all squishy got SOOOOO scratchy with Charlie's. Actually, I didn't notice it until I ran out of Charlie's and had to buy Ecos. Also, Ethan used to have NASTY diaper rashes, which have 100% disappeared now that we are using Ecos. I heard that some babies are sensitive to Charlie's. I think Ethan must have been one of them.

But, yeah. I think it made my clothes scratchy and my cotton diapers scratchy, too.

  • Glad to know I'm not alone! Where do you get Eco's? Maybe I'll try that.

  • They sell it at our local natural food store and I think I also found it at Kroger, actually. Its more expensive than Charlie's, but I've had good results. Seriously. Ethan hasn't had a single rash since I started using it.

  • I am surprised!  I have been using Charlie's soap for about a year now and I love it.  We sell cloth diapers where I work and sell the soap with it, because it is the only soap that Fuzzi Buns recommends, since it does not cause any build-up on the diapers.  I wonder if the reason that the clothes feel rough is because the soap is stripping them?  Do other soaps have something that builds up and that is why they feel soft? I don't know.  Just thinking out loud.

I don't know. All I know is that my Sun Seedlings fitteds got REALLY rough with the Charlie's. And Ethan had rashes. And I have read that some kids are sensitive to Charlie's. Also, I've read that there is the concern that Charlie's doesn't sanitize, so even if the rash isn't directly from the Charlie's, it can show up because of the residual bacteria in the diapers? Something like that.

    This is from Earth Bums:

    "Note to Charlie's Soap Users:
Some babies have experienced sensitivity with Charlie's Soap. The manufacturer is working on solving the problem. "

And here is a whole thread of mamas on Diaper Swappers talking about it:

And here is a poll about chemical burns from Charlie's

Wow. The more I read the more I realize that what Ethan had was DEFINITELY something like that! WOW!
