What the eff?

I just read this on the Similac site.  Have you ever heard of this?

A New Technique: Baby Breath Holding

This month, your baby may become so irritable that he has a temper tantrum. He may hold his breath until he turns blue, and briefly faint.

This is not as scary as it looks. Breath holding is usually more frightening to watch than it is threatening to a baby's emotional or physical health. Also, normal breathing resumes when he faints, so the spell is over quickly.

This, of course, will change. Once he matures, he?ll start expressing his feelings in words and not temperamental outbursts.

If you're concerned about breath-holding spells or other behavioral issues, discuss them with your health care professional.

Re: What the eff?

  • I've heard of that-I read it in the Baby 411 book I have.  Thankfully my DD or DS never did that.
  • I actually have heard about it.  One day after my workout, I went to go pickup my girls at the gym daycare.  There were EMTs and an ambulance outside the door.  An infant had held his breath and the staff couldn't get him to stop and he passed out.  Apparently, he had a history of it, but his mother never said anything to the staff!  Anyway, later they were saying that one of the things that sometimes works is to blow on babies' faces to get them to stop holding their breath.

  • My aunt used to do this when she was little, and I used to babysit for a little girl who had the tendancy to do this too. I hope my kids bypass this stage!
  • Yes I've heard of this! The boys' physical therapist has a patient who is a bit older than my guys.  It started out as a serious food aversion, but then when he realized this would get the parents to overreact he started doing it whenever he did or didn't want something.  They stopped overreacting and wait until he can't hold his breath and then he takes a breath when it gets too much.  Kind of funny how kids figure stuff out.
  • My cousin's son who will be 4 in May did this up until last year.  Scard the *** out of everyone but him!
  • Oh yes! Drake pulled that crap on me once. My baby brother (13 yrs younger than me) used to do it too... luckily I had seen it before so I didn't go into a panic when Drake passed out on me.

When my brother was little his pediatrician told my mom that it was his experience that babies that hold their breath until they pass out grow up to be extremely stubborn teenagers and adults. He was spot on with my brother - there is just no reasoning with that kid when he gets an idea stuck in his head.

  • Not only have I heard of it, Sarah has done it.  It's terrifying.
