2nd Trimester

Do Body Maternity Pillows Really Help During Pregnancy?

Hi everyone,

I’m currently in my second trimester and struggling to get comfortable at night, especially with back and hip pain, and I’m wondering if investing in a maternity body pillow is really worth it. A friend recently suggested I give one a try, but I’m still unsure if it’s better than just using regular pillows.

Some moms say they’re life-changing, while others think regular pillows do the job just fine.

  • Did a body pillow make a big difference for you?
  • Which shape (U-shaped, C-shaped, wedge, or straight) worked best?
  • Any tips for getting the most comfort out of one?

I’d really appreciate your experiences and advice before I decide!

  • Yes!!! I have the U shape, but I got it nearly a decade ago. I would go with it or the large C shape. They are easy to roll and switch sides at night.

My husband jokes it's his stand in when I'm pregnant. When baby is born I still use it, It helps to sit up and feed at night and to block my husband from my side when I am laying and breastfeeding. I just told my husband last week it is my top maternity purchase of all time as I snuggled into it at night.

Hope this helps encourage you to splurge on it and get some 💤💤💤.

  • YMMV but I bought 2 different maternity pillows (one U shape and the Baby Bub one that comes with like 4 pillows you can configure different ways) and neither has worked great for me. I've tried both of them every couple days/weeks from around 12 weeks to now (25 weeks) to see if maybe something changes, and so far it hasn't. I find that I feel kind of trapped in them when trying to turn over during the night. The U shape one (I have the Momcozy) in particular also doesn't really feel like it supports my body at all, so much as just surrounding me.

The thing that's worked best for me so far is actually just using a 2nd king-sized pillow at my back. I finally gave up and did that this week instead of using the pregnancy pillows and this is the best I've slept in quite some time.
