Blood Clot Awareness - Pregnancy & Postpartum

Starting a discussion board about blood clots.

I am a blood clot survivor and taking Lovenox twice a day during my pregnancy. Because my clot was estrogen related (birth control pills) in 2017, I have been on injections since we started trying back in April.

Happy to swap stories with anyone else on injections, but also wanted to pass along info to all pregnant moms. I am a Thrombassador for the National Blood Clot Alliance and that's what I do off the clock.

Re: Blood Clot Awareness - Pregnancy & Postpartum

  • I’m so sorry you’re going through all this, but it’s amazing you’re using it to help everyone be informed! I am unfamiliar with it. I did read recently about some women wearing compression socks during pregnancy and I meant to ask my dr about it out of curiosity, but forgot.

Like some others in our group, I am taking baby aspirin every day per my dr due to COVID coming with clotting risks.

  • I'm taking baby aspirin too, on top of the blood thinner, but for pre-eclampsia risk. With the heartburn meds and others I literally have a bucket full of goodies each night  :D But it's all worth it!
  • Also taking baby aspirin, I can't remember why exactly 😆 I think just because of my age (I'm 36). I also tend to have slightly high platelets, I thought that could be a clot risk as well but I didn't think I saw it in your info...
  • @butterflyhunny I am 37, so I'm on the baby aspirin for pre-eclampsia risk; I would think that's why you are on it, too. I can ask around on about the high platelet count (there are a bunch of moms in the Alliance's group, but I have yet to tell them I'm expecting). Definitely ask your doctor, though!
  • @dogmamacita21 I mentioned my platelets to one of the OBs before my blood testing, and as usual I was slightly high with the recent testing, but neither doctor seemed concerned by it. They told me they'd be more concerned if my platelets were low (I believe that's a bleeding out risk). And no one specifically mentioned preeclampsia to me but maybe that's always the reason they say baby aspirin for older moms 🤷‍♀️
  • I’m 37 and started taking baby aspirin after I had Covid in December. I know it’s to prevent blood clots but it’s helpful to hear everyone’s stories. Thank you for sharing!
  • I’m also taking baby aspirin daily because of my advanced maternal age (37) and multiple pregnancies. They said it was to help with blood clots as well as to make sure there was adequate blood flow to the placenta, which I guess can become less effective as you age and with multiple pregnancies. Though it sounds like a lot of good reasons to be taking it (e.g., pre-eclampsia, covid, etc.) if needed.
