3rd Trimester

Signs of Early Labor?

I’m currently 33 weeks but feel like birth is imminent. I can’t shake the feeling and I’m not sure why. My son was born at 36 weeks but he was large. I’m expecting a girl this time and she’s only in the 33rd percentile. My abdomen is getting really tight at times, baby is moving constantly, and my back is super painful. Anyone else feel like their child is coming in the next couple of days or so without any specific thing to point to?

Re: Signs of Early Labor?

  • If you feel like your contractions are anything but Braxton hicks at that gestational age call your doctor. I wouldn’t say that they are early contractions, BH are perfectly normal but if they start to be regular or hurt call your doctor as they can give medication to stop them. Usually they would prevent labor until after 36 or 37 weeks.

What you described (hardening of stomach) sounds like Braxton hicks to me, but you should consult your doctor. As for birth being imminent, it is. But it still shouldn’t be for a couple months. Achy back is totally normal, but again, talk to your doctor if you’re worried. Ultimately it’s way too soon for baby to come so if you’re really feeling like baby is going to come you should be calling your doctor.
Fwiw, I feel like labor was going to happen any minute at 38 weeks with my second. It didn’t. I was induced at 41+4.
  • I had a doctors appointment yesterday and she confirmed that I am already dilating. She gave me the speech about going straight to the hospital if anything seemed like a preterm labor symptom.
  • Same here. Fourth child and all were 37,36, and 35 weeks. If you delivered early before you are at a higher risk to do the same again. I’m 34 weeks and 2.5cm dilated. I’m staying hydrated and resting as much as possible!
