Re: Fit Mom Friday 12/10

  • Health/Fitness Goal (and why, if you want to share): Continue to workout 3-5x a week to prepare for an easy L&D and recovery

Week's Successes: Two yoga practices, two cardio-strength, and one walk (today)! Being unemployed and having no car really makes my excuses to not work out just fly out the window. One thing I have started this week is working on my mental fitness with guided meditation. I’ve been studying hypnobirthing and think I’ll try it this time around, so I’ve been incorporating quiet meditation and affirmations into my workout times. It’s definitely difficult to empty my mind with all the worries and stresses going on, especially with DD6 running around like a herd of elephants, but it’s just good practice for the real thing.

Week's Challenges: Just my own procrastinating skills. I’m a champion at putting things off. I’m always happy I did the workout afterwards, it’s just getting to the mat where I have a hard time. I’m also so short of breath! There’s some embarrassment there that it somehow reflects negatively on myself and my fitness, even though I’m making a human being and literally no one watches me work out except the dog and sometimes the cats.

GTKY: What is a holiday tradition (new or old) that you are excited to share with your baby next year? Probably decorating the tree. There is something so magical about sharing things for the first time with your baby. I have always enjoyed seeing DD6 experience things for the first time, because it helps me see things differently and appreciate them more. I’m excited to do it all over again with this little one— and for DD6 to join in as the wise big sister!
  • Health/Fitness Goal (and why, if you want to share): Eat healthy, walk every day during my lunch break, and do prenatal yoga 3-4x/week to keep my body strong and prepare for an easy labor and delivery.

Week's Successes: Not much to report this week— Prenatal yoga 2x this week, and walking 4 days during my lunch break. We’ve been crazy busy since my brother is getting married this weekend and we traveled out of town yesterday to attend the weekend festivities. I’m hoping all the dancing at the wedding reception will count as a workout! 🤷🏽‍♀️

Week's Challenges: I’ve been getting SO out of breath lately! I’m panting after climbing the stairs to get to our clinic on the 2nd floor and have only been able to do 2 out of my typical 3 laps around the medical building during lunch because I get way too exhausted! 🥵 I’m suspecting my shortness of breath will only progress over the next few months too…

GTKY: What is a holiday tradition (new or old) that you are excited to share with your baby next year? Putting up the tree, and getting to share with our baby all the special memories we have behind each ornament! 🎄 And also baking Christmas cookies! He won’t be old enough to enjoy the cookies quite yet, but baking cookies is one of my favorite parts of the holidays and it’ll be special to share the process in the kitchen together! Also I’m excited to just sing and dance to Christmas songs together— I’ll have to brush up on these songs on the piano!!

  • Sharing in case anyone else has this issue:

My pregnancy fitness journey came to a screeching hault a month ago. I wasn't intensely exercising, but developed a mild pain in my low back (not felt during workouts). I kept stretching and exercising thinking it helped the pain, but it only got worse. Way worse. I had to stop exercising all together because the pain got so strong and constant.
    And then the pain disappeared.
I went to a PT, and she explained that the problem is my loose ligaments. All the lunges and stretches I did were causing something in my low back to slip out of place. Which is why stopping workouts immediately helped.
I can start exercising again but only if I stick to symmetrical movements, like squats. Walking is good too. But now that my belly is bigger I'm feeling a little intimidated to try a workout again. So I guess that's my current goal: keep walking, and safely exercise 10 minutes everyday... and stop eating so many Christmas cookies.
  • @aloha_mama I have those same procrastination skills 😂

@emky0704 I’m sorry to hear about your pain, and glad that cutting back has reduced it.

Health/Fitness Goal (and why, if you want to share): Keep my body strong for labor, minimize extra weight gain

Week's Successes: a whopping 1 workout. But at least I ran 3.2 miles in the cold and rain, which is similar conditions to what my half marathon will be next weekend.

Week's Challenges: procrastination and busy work schedule, plus all the winter challenges- getting dark early, cold, rain.

GTKY: What is a holiday tradition (new or old) that you are excited to share with your baby next year? I love the holidays, especially being able to watch the magic through our kids’ eyes. I can’t wait to add this new baby to DS4’s Christmas fun. Picking out and setting up up the tree, holiday baking, waiting for Santa, giving and opening presents, etc. And we do the pickle tradition (German family), so that’s a fun quickly one.
  • Health/Fitness Goal (and why, if you want to share): workout at least 3x a week for a comfortable pregnancy, quick recovery, and able to keep up with my kids

Week's Successes: 3 workouts plus a couple good walks

Week's Challenges: it was a good week. My energy feels pretty good but every few days it seems like everything catches up to me and I crash - yesterday was that day. I was a zombie.

@emky0704 That makes sense. I was getting frustrated about getting low back pain already when I’ve been working out with preventing back pain in mind.

GTKY: What is a holiday tradition (new or old) that you are excited to share with your baby next year? One of my favorites is our local lighted parade. It’s so small-towny, and sometimes cheesy and I love it.
  • @monstera13 Every workout at this point is a win, I think! There’s days when I feel energized and ready to go, and there’s days where all I can do is direct homeschool while lying on the couch on top of a pile of washed clothes that need to be folded. And both of those are okay, I think… I’m trying to be better at listening to my body and just doing what feels right that day. Remind us of your half marathon this next weekend so we can be thinking of you and sending good vibes!

@emky0704 I’m so scared of injuring myself, too! All that relaxin flooding our bodies and things moving around… It’s so much easier to do something wrong and pay for it later. Glad to hear you’re doing better!
  • @aloha_mama That’s a good reminder. It hard not to compare myself to my pre-pregnant workout status!
