Cross Country Road Trip w/2 Toddlers

Hi everyone,
My husband and I are considering a cross-country road trip (west coast to east coast) shortly before the winter holidays with a 3.5 y/o and a 1.5 y/o. I'd love to hear from those who have attempted this before! Lay it on me - the good, the bad, the in-between. We would take a southern US route while monitoring weather incredibly closely in the lead-up and along our drive. We'd look to stay in hotels with well-reviewed cleaning protocols during this time. Flying isn't an option for us. Our goal is to be with a small group of our extended family members (grandparents, aunt, uncle, cousins) - while adhering to all recommended safety protocol - that we haven't seen since my 1.5 y/o was born. We would stay a month or more on the east coast to make the drives worth it.
I'd love any hints or tips you may have for us. I know and respect that this kind of trip isn't for everyone. Thanks in advance for your help.
