Nutrition/Food Q

How are you momma's with morning sickness getting the nutrition your body needs? My problem is that I get so nauseous that I don't want to eat but then when I don't eat my overall demeanor plummets because I'm not eating enough. It's a vicious cycle & this afternoon is proving to be one of those days. It just took me over an hour to stomach eating a meal because I don't feel great. I've tested all the things... blood sugar, blood pressure, temp, etc. & the bottom line is I'm pregnant with morning sickness & need to eat but can't stand the idea of food. Help!?

I was the same way last pregnancy! This pregnancy I’ve tried to be more proactive and at least eat something “safe” (for me lots of carbs, haha)and small regularly. That has helped tremendously! I find myself getting nauseous when I haven’t ate in a while.
  • @rgn12 Yes! I've noticed that happens to me, too, if I don't eat enough. Sounds tacky but pre-pregnancy I never ate a lot so constantly eating is new for me. Like our grocery bill has easily doubled since I've become pregnant. It's embarrassing, but true!! Carbs have been an easy grab in the past but all I taste is the salt & it just makes me nauseous again.

  • This time around I kind of force myself to eat. I do a protein shake first thing when I wake up just to get something in my stomach, then mid morning I have a Sargento balanced break thing, then lunch, then another balanced break, then dinner. I eat like 5-6 small meals throughout the day.

Lately I’m never hungry, nor does anything ever sound good to eat.
  • @eggsbene42 I'm feeling that way, too. What kind of protein shake are you drinking? I had one that I loved but OB cautioned against it.

I drink the pre-packaged ones, pure protein or premier protein currently.
  • @mommaduck2490 - really it can be anything. I switch between Lara bars, protein bars, shakes, just anything I can eat quickly and doesn’t require effort. Just to stave off nausea.
  • @mommaduck2490 umm well, I haven’t been? lol. I have felt so so awful that I pretty much just eat whatever I feel I can stomach, and some days are for sure not the healthiest. I’ve been awful at the veggie intake, but every once in a while I’ll crave steamed broccoli & cauliflower and eat a whole bag. Other than that, I’ve noticed eating cold foods isn’t too bad on the nausea, so I’ve been trying to eat lots of berries and yogurt. I’m trying not to stress too much about making sure I hit all the food groups, and have been focusing more on eating just Something rather than avoiding food because of the nausea. Maybe not the best approach but just trying to survive feeling like crap, working, and momming to 2 other littles!
  • @mommaduck2490 I had been on a protein shake regimen pre-pregnancy (not here to sell it) and once I became pregnant I was thankful for it because I have been eating like crap and I know it has many great nutrients in it as well. So I will blend it with fresh fruit and lots of ice to make it like a frozen shake and it’s easier to stomach than food sometimes.

My main issue now is water. Has anyone else been struggling with water intake? I had my first apt yesterday and was told I need to be drinking between 100oz and a gal a day. Ummm... I am lucky to get half that 😬

@savedbygrace1213 I’m struggling with water intake too! I’ve changed it up a little bit with some sparkling water but I’m still not getting enough. I added some Gatorade (reduce sugar) too when I was really struggling. Idk if that’s the best thing, but it’s something! Ugh
  • @savedbygrace1213 @rgn12 My water intake has been lacking, too. I will say I've noticed how much worse I feel when I don't drink water which has motivated me to keep drinking water. Cold ice water tastes best so I found a cup I love & just keep it full of ice & water. I did sparking water for a bit, but it got old so I stopped.

@savedbygrace1213 I was too, but based on some of the ingredients my OB wasn't impressed so that's out which makes me sad because I totally agree that it was much like you described, easy to have as a meal replacement & packed full of nutrients.
  • I can relate to everything posted above! The only food that I feel I can stomach when times are rough are white starchy carbs. Breakfast has been the most "okay" time of day where I can manage a protein shake and feel good.

If I eat a huge meal (which would normally hold me over for 4-5 hours), I get like a diabetic response after 3 hours. Not hungry, but the blood sugar drop is overwhelming, I get shaky and nauseous even though still full from huge meal. I bought oatmeal cookies for these moments! They've been so yummy and life saving :)

  • Water intake is my problem too!! I've been eating a LOT of carbs for breakfast and snacks. I'm loving muffins and bagels. I try and balance it with salads and veges and a protein for dinner but I still feel massive bump wise!

@scaredunprepared same. I’m just eating whatever I can when I can bc most of the time nothing sounds good. Cookies, salads, whatever. I have found that cold, fresh foods sound better to me most of the time. Frozen fruit, smoothies, fruit popsicles, cucumbers, etc. saltines when I can’t eat just to not completely crash. I’ll add cheese or apples if I can.

Same on water! I have powdered Gatorade mix that I make super weak Gatorade with to help me drink water. Or do fizzy water or cucumber water. That helps for some reason lol.

It’s so hard bc I cannot plan for what I can eat the next meal/day!
  • Hello Mamas,
Is anyone else all of a sudden getting their hunger back ×2? I haven't had sickness...a bit of nauseau but not much and more just full feeling without eating or eating slow... othereise I have been eating almost normal for first trimester and now I am exactly at 10 weeks.  This morning, I woke up so hungry and now - waiting on my husband to pick up buttermilk for pancakes - I am literally sitting on the kitchen floor and am definitely feeling depleted without food...  and almost getting to an irrational stage... hehe..   please tell me I am not alone in this feeling?

  • I’ve been hungry for 3 weeks 🤣 feel nausea anytime I DIDNT eat. Definitely feel low and irritable anytime I get slightly low on fuel 😌. Keep apple sauce packs, gold fish, and cheese sticks in my bag at all times.

@j-to-the-amie yes 💯. I have been both starving and also averse to almost all foods/nauseous for weeks now. I am so much hungrier than usual but just can’t find much that sounds good.
  • Phew!  Glad to hear is not just me...  haha love goldfish suggestion - will definitely be buying a pack of those tomorrow!

@bkjade yep I feel I am now more at crazy hunger point with less aversions... not really "cravings" but once I think of something that does sound good - I really want it.  It took me awhile this morning to think what I wanted for my second breakfast which turned into almost lunch time... and then when I thought "pancakes!!",  I all of a sudden had such a hunger... I felt faint at the idea of waiting... the problem was it is a holiday and where I live - on holidays - everything is closed but restaurants and gas stations so DH went to 3 gas stations in hope for Buttermilk to find out they only really sell mainly beers haha which, in normal situations, would have solved my problem too - but obviously not now.

End story - since no buttermilk at all 3 places...added jogurt and a good 30 minute longer wait instead...   but they were really good.... but I think next time I will convince myself of something easier...
