Re: UO Thursday 1/28

  • Likely a popular opinion if you’ve watched Bridgerton, but Daphnes bangs in that season were terrible.

  • @emmylou78 omg they were terrible. A very popular opinion. I cant decide if the gelled down 2 strands were worse or just the regular bangs.

  • Agreed! So bad. It looked like my terrible postpartum regrowth. Why would anyone choose that for themselves?!
  • Maybe a UO- I hated Bridgerton! It was like, “dumb in a fun way” for maybe 2-3 episodes (cool costumes, hot guys, soapy plot) and then just got super annoying to me. Every episode hit the exact same plot points over and over, literally scene for scene- the Duke is messed up because of his dad, high society is gossipy and vicious, the second oldest sister doesn’t want to live a traditional life. I couldn’t even tell you a solid personality trait that Daphne had, she kind of just did stuff. I watch a ton of TV, and I haven’t struggled to finish a show that much in a while. And yes, the bangs were awful and it also sort of weirded me out that she looks kind of like she’s 14.

Side note... I watched it at the time when I was having the most mood swings/irritability that I’ve had so far this pregnancy, so maybe that explains my response? Haha.
  • @the_most_happy I couldn't get past the trailer! Not into it.

  • @the_most_happy I enjoyed the Vitamin String Quartet covers because I’m here for anachronisms (19th-century orchestra playing Taylor Swift, yes please!). The people were hot and the costumes were gorgeous BUT I really cannot get past the main storyline—it’s so problematic. And it’s just glossed over. It also makes Daphne wholly unlikable.

I read the book and honestly the book is worse. I hated the characters they were even more deplorable than in the show. And again the key plot point is just so awful, also even worse in the book, I’m kind of shocked THIS was the romance novel we decided to turn into a series.
  • @pickle-chips @the_most_happy I also loved the music!! That was one of my favorite parts of the show.

@emmylou78 agree about the bangs. They were so bad they were distracting. I couldn’t decide id the actress was attractive for the longest time because of this. (Spoiler alert- I googled her and she is gorgeous... shocker. Haha)

im not finished with the show- I have 3 episodes to go so take my opinion with a grain of salt buttt I really like it mostly for showcasing people of color in the aristocracy during a period piece. (There was a great discussion about this on NPR today. I only caught the end of it.) It is so refreshing and adds another layer of dimension of discussion and intrigue to the show. Also, the costuming is beautiful. I’m a sucker for bright colors.
  • @pickle-chips @surrenderdorothy yes, the music was one of the few great parts to me! Genuinely loved the cover of Thank U, Next.
  • @emmylou78 Her bangs were AWFUL, and I thought everything she wore made her look like Wendy from Peter Pan.  Also, the Duke reminded me of someone and I can't put my finger on who it is but whoever it is, I don't like them and so I couldn't really get into it because I wasn't feeling him.  I did love the music too though!

  • Music was on point. I love Tswift. I found Daphne looked a lot like a young Natalie Portman, so I can't unsee that.

I do have a lot of issues with the way it portrays sex and relationships. It all felt really childish. I know it was about courting etc., but they could have done better. Her smart sister was definitely my fav character. Smash the patriarchy girl.

    Spoiler if you haven't finished.

I hated when Daphne forced herself on the Duke and made him finish. That was rape and almost made me stop watching. The fact that it was barely glazed over as a betrayal of trust was sad and disturbing.

  • @doodlemom131 reply in spoiler because:
    TW sexual assault
So much this! This is the main plot point I was referring to. One that I think makes Daphne deplorable as our main character. How can I root for a rapist? The scene in the book in some ways is worse: the Duke is drunk and is trying more adamantly to say no. My mouth fell open when I was reading it because I was shocked by the inclusion of martial rape. But maybe this actually makes the show worse, because they tried to make the assault less obvious by not having the Duke be drunk? But he was still revoking his consent, so it is still 100% rape. ANYWAY, if the roles had been reverse and it had been the Duke perpetrating the assault against Daphne. It would have been off with his head. And don't get me started on the fact that it was a white woman committing assault against a Black man and she is not repentant in the least and we are made to feel sorry for her because her attempt was unsuccessful, but we are not made to consider his feelings about being assaulted by his wife.
  • Ew I haven't gotten on board with Bridgerton and now I'm feeling like that's a good idea.

Semi-related UO: Game of Thrones is gross, violent just for the sake of being violent, and also (somehow) boring. Hate, hate, double hate, loathe entirely.
