GTKY Influencers

I'd love to share some of the most influential personalities we subscribe to. Who inspires you and why?

Could be cooking, fitness, general health, life coach. Could be a blogger, instagram personality, youtuber, a show or podcast, your grandma... Anything goes here! What consistently leaves you with the warm and fuzzies?

I love sharing resources and lifting each other up to be better and feel better!

Re: GTKY Influencers

  • This is a good one @nomangos23! I'm gonna think on it, but I'm super excited to see the responses. Off the top of my head, I love Humans of New York. We are all really the same and I think he helps show that.
  • @kgg2241 ooo yes I love Humans of New York!

On Instagram I love following Daphne Oz, she has such a real take on life / food / family. She is SO engaged with her kids and seems so genuine. I also love that she'll gorge on the most delicious looking pizza for lunch but eat a kale sale for dinner. Just so relatable.

Food blogger I love - PinchofYum. I follow her blog and her instagram. I can't even describe why I love her so much. I've been following her for years and at one time she even inspired me to start my own blog. (IT WAS SO MUCH WORK BUT I LOVED IT!) She lives in MN and TW* lost a baby @ 23 weeks a few years ago, so I really latched on to her journey after I lost angel baby. Her recipes are mostly really good too, and simple. And she's always got something insightful to say. Speaking of, has anyone heard of a capsule wardrobe?

And on a really down day - I just look up hastags on Instagram of baby animals and that NEVER disappoints.

  • I might be the only one who doesn't know/ any of these “influencers” you speak of...literally learned of that term like a month ago.

I have an IG but DH uses it mostly - he follows his old gym trainers / gym. I have the British royal family on there also, but I feel like everyone else does, too!
  • @lillywonderland same. I hadn’t even heard the term until quite recently!
I follow Sarcastic Mommy on IG. And Effin  Birds 😂  And George Takei. That’s really it, but usually enough for a few good chuckles.
  • @lillywonderland @RedBreast35 Influencer doesn't have to apply to social media! I interpret an influencer as anyone who inspires and motivates you. It's now a term most often used for people with pretty instagram accounts, but it doesn't have to be. Your favorite author could be an influencer, or it doesn't even have to be a person! Maybe it's Oprah's master class? Or a podcast you love! Anything goes!
  • @RedBreast35 Effin Birds is amazing! I just found it a few weeks ago.

@kgg2241 Humans of New York is always a nice reminder that there is good in humanity still.

I’m not sure if any of these are influencers, but I really enjoy Post Secret. I’ve read Sunday Secrets every week since high school and have a couple of the books.

I enjoy the podcast called “Guys We F*****” the title is misleading, but it’s two female comedians who take an anti-slut shaming approach to sexual exploration. It’s very informative and tackles a lot of tough topics regarding females in today’s society.

I follow a bunch of Mommy Bloggers on IG, but I’m not ride or die for any of them really. I just drool over their home decor and perfect bodies.

On YouTube I’m very into Jaclyn Hill for makeup techniques and Jeffree Star for makeup reviews.

Im also big into ASMR, anyone else?!
  • @duewithpu2 ASMR like balancing your chakras? Also, what is Post Secret? And that podcast sounds interesting! I'm going to check it out!

@nomangos23 ASMR stands for Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response. Basically some people get a certain “tingles” like feeing from certain triggers. My biggest triggers are certain ways people talk and when a doctor uses the stethoscope on me. I remember being little in church and I would get ASMR from my pastor preaching and also my 5th grade teacher. I don’t know what it is about certain voices that just set it off. It is really hard to describe, but it’s like a euphoric trance like relaxation. Best feeling ever! A lot of times I’ll get goosebumps with it too. I’ve noticed my son gets it during hair cuts and stethoscope time too. I watch ASMR videos on YouTube every night before bed!

ETA: Post Secret is a project that asks people to mail in postcards with their secrets on them as a way to “let it go”. It started small and now the creator does all kinds of tours, has a bunch of books that are full of secrets, and even had an exhibit in the Smithsonian!

I dont really follow any influencers. I tend to use Instagram to follow celebrities that I like. I guess I do follow nat and cat they are just 2 moms from Toronto who write about having kids. They do videos called mom truths and just wrote a book that I am almost done reading. They are always good for a laugh and make me feel better about being a mom. They also tour around the US and Canada doing shows.
  • I follow Pinch of Yum for food inspo on Instagram. She has insanely good recipes and the best chocolate chip cookie recipe I have ever been able to find (bonus that it's easy and you don't need to chill it. Cookies in my face in 20 minutes? YAS!)

I don't find many mommy influencers, but I found Elle Lindquist and Aaryn Williams when I was looking and L&D vlogs on youtube (I am weird, ok?) I also love Scary Mommy's blog and instagram. Right up my ally.

  • @duewithpu2 Ok I had no idea this was a thing but I those kinds of reactions all the time. Mine are less physical though and more emotional. Often related to a sound or music. I just thought I was nostalgic or something! Look! We learn something new every day

@cmdesigner Bless that woman for her cookies.

I haven’t been on insta in forever! I do love scary mommy.

I dont have a ton of time on my phone but I am always driving and enjoy podcasts: Oprah’s soul Sunday podcast on Spotify is my jam. I’ve straight up cried while driving down the highway 🤪

  • @lillywonderland my co-worker is a non-fiction writer and we are both avid bakers and he and I joked about starting a baking blog which didn't have life stories before the recipe. Tbh I think it'd be a hit! lol It's like the universal annoyance of all people searching for recipes.
  • I'm a big Chip and Johanna Gaines fan and follow all of Johanna's gorgeousness on Instagram and go to her when I need some design inspiration!. Also love Humans of New York.

@duewithpu2 I forgot about post secrets, I used to read them a lot in college but haven't in years.
  • I don’t know how to Instagram so I’m barely on there. As for people I enjoy following through, I really like Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard. They have such a refreshingly normal view on marriage and parenting. I mostly stick with True Crime podcasts, but I also really like Pod Save America and Lovett or Leave It. Both are political podcasts, but they have humor so it’s not just someone droning on.

I feel so unhip for not having more influencers!

@lillywonderland samesies on getting my recipes from Pinterest. Pinterest is THE BEST.

  • Oh and I also love Ellen (as I'm watching right now). She always makes me laugh and I love hearing the inspiring stories of people she helps and also love Twitch :)
  • One of my guilty pleasures is following drama with the YouTube beauty influencers.

To all of you who like cooking/baking blogs, Half Baked Harvest has awesome recipes. She even has a cookbook now.
  • @themadcamel same! I was front and center for the James Charles/Tati tea
