Trying to Get Pregnant

TTC Night shift concerns

Hey guys!! I'm reaching out to real humans as Google terrifies me. Here's the background. I work animal emergency overnight my hours are either 9p to 7am or 10p to 10a. I do seven shifts in a row and then have 7 off.  My husband and I got pregnant back in December but sadly I miscarried at 8 weeks. We started trying again in March and recently I have been tracking my ovulation with the Clear Blue kit and we planned our days and intimacy around it. I was in the 2 week waiting period but sadly my period has begun. I'm very discouraged. I'm 35 so I'm worried my window is closing. Now I love my job and my work hours. I try to get enough sleep but I also petsit on the side which I think might be hurting me too. I need some advice on how to manage the TTC while working night shift. Have others done it? Is it important I sleep a certain amount? Am i hurting my chances working nights??

Thank you!

  • Hi and welcome! We don’t do one off posts here as it clutters the board and we like to keep it organized. Please read through the pinned posts, intro in the newbies thread and then jump into the daily threads as well as any weekly or monthly threads. Thanks! My cousin and friend both work night shifts (although not as many as you in a row) and *TW* both got pregnant their first try *end tw*... so I’m not particularly convinced it hurts your chances other than if you can’t see your husband at some point during the 7 days

    I'm sorry for your loss.
It sounds like you're early in the TTC journey, and keep it mind it usually takes several months to get pregnant, so after re-starting in March, there's nothing to be worried about yet. (This is all in the TTGP guide pinned at the top of this board)

But I can tell you that I've worked overnights for over a decade, and myself and other co-workers have been able to get pregnant. However, you should talk to your doctor if you have health concerns.

  • I have had the same question. I used to get pregnant fairly quickly but would have miscarriages. Since working nights I haven't gotten pregnant at all anymore. I almost never get more than 5 hours sleep a day. So honestly I don't know...
