Hernia caused by pregnancy.

This is my fifth baby and I had cancer surgery on my small intestine in April of this year. Apparently the combination has caused a huge hernia in which my intestines are pushing through my abdomen. I’m scheduled to meet with a surgeon next week to decide if surgery is safe and or necessary for me at this point or if I should wait until after baby is born. Has anyone had this and had surgery during pregnancy? Or waited until after?

Re: Hernia caused by pregnancy.

  • I had a minor inguinal hernia that developed in my last pregnancy, which only required monitoring. It went away after pregnancy. (I was going to have surgery after giving birth, but didn't for reasons not relevant here.) However, it sounds like yours may be much more serious, and you will need to wait until you meet with the surgeon to find out if immediate surgery is necessary. I'm not an expert, but hernias can certainly be dangerous in some situations, and only specialists familiar with your case will know the best course for you. Although it's not ideal to operate during pregnancy, I know that it's sometimes done if necessary for the health of mother and/or baby.

I'm sorry you're having to deal with this and I hope you get the answers you need when you meet with the surgeon.
