Low fetal heartrate 5w4d

I have been going through fertility treatments and finally got my BFP on my 3rd IUI. Went for an early scan at 5w0d due to my history (several miscarriages) and saw 2 gestational sacs - one empty, one with a yolk sac and what looked like the beginnings of a fetal pole. Fast forward to 5w4d I had another scan due to some spotting. There are still 2 sacs - one with a yolk sac, and the other with a yolk and fetal pole with a heart rate of 80bpm.  Doctor was concerned about the low heart rate. I honestly wasn’t even expecting to see a heart beat because of how early I am, but now I’m concerned because my doctor is concerned! Any similar stories where your outcome was positive?!

Re: Low fetal heartrate 5w4d

  • @bjw0605 my son's HR was about 80 at 6w5d and he's now a healthy 7 month old. I thought that it being low was a bad sign, but my RE said that just seeing a heartbeat that early is great. I've also heard that a lot of practitioners look for a heart beat, but don't record a heart rate that early because it can be so erratic without there being a problem which just stresses mom out unnecessarily. I think you're correct to be happy with seeing any heart beat at all at 5+4!

@stassischroeder Thank you for your reply! You’ve put my mind at ease! Glad to hear your little one is doing great :)

  • It’s extremely rare to even see a HB before 6 weeks, so it most likely had just started beating around the time of your scan.  FHR typically starts around 75-100 BPM and goes up from there.  This is something your doctor should know so I’m confused why they told you that was low.  Honestly, I might find a new doctor.
