Re: Weekly Randoms 10/29

  • @eatinwatermelonseeds So we had allergy free treats (but I forgot to get a teal pumpkin to let people know). We live in quite a large subdivision and I was impressed with the number of houses that had teal pumpkins out. Some houses had edible treats, some had little prizes like stickers, the mini containers of slime from Target, and bouncy balls. Some houses had both! Candy, allergy free treats, and non edible treats. There aren't any allergies in my family, but we have a couple kids with significant allergies at our daycare so I was more aware this year.

    That’s equally sad and gross.

Hey! At least they were trying to protect themselves!!

  • @fatmonica did you grow out of the dairy allergy? DH has very mild (but can get bad) anaphylactic reactions to dairy but people assume it's lactose intolerance which it isn't. I've always been on the lookout for DD (and will be for this LO). So far so good although his didn't really get bad until his teens which isn't common. His allergy test showed he was allergic to beef, not dairy, but when he has his episodes (had a couple ER trips in high school) he hasn't had beef but has had cheese. He took one sip of a drink I made with whey protein powder and his throat got insanely itchy. Allergies are so confusing.

  • @kvh22 Allergies are confusing. Mine wasn't lactose intolerance either - if I remember right I was actually allergic to the protein in milk.  I outgrew it when I was around 16.  Milk sent me into shock when I was little.  As a child butter would cause me to break out in hives and anything with cheese would give me a stomach ache. I noticed fewer problems as I got older and gradually was able to add in dairy products.  I still don't eat a ton of dairy or drink regular milk but it's more because I never learned to like it.   I'm fine now with cheese, butter, and chocolate which I have learned to love.
  • @fatmonica thank you for the explanation. I appreciate it. We have been talking to our ped about it occasionally but nothing has come up yet, FX.

  • Yea, it was sad. They were trying to be safe! I forget sometimes how much a take for granted access to basic things
  • So like, how bad for you is ginger ale? I don't drink soda because it kind of grosses me out and I just don't like it, but the ginger ale does help with the nausea. It feels "healthier" but I don't think it actually is

  • @DuchessOfCambridge Try LaCroix! It's bubbly w/ no sugar

  • @DuchessOfCambridge well, it's caffeine free, but contains the same amount of sugar as a can of regular coke or pepsi or whatever. So about the same amount of sugar as 4 fun size Twix. :)

  • @sleepy33 :-o !!!! K, so cooling it on the ginger ale. That's disgusting. Maybe I can make ginger infused sparkling water. @SpaceBurger I've been drinking LaCroix all day and no help!

  • @eatinwatermelonseeds Are there any brands or specific types of candy that are more allergy friendly? I’d like to have some on hand next year, but honestly don’t even know where to start.
  • @DuchessOfCambridge dang, I thought it was the perfect answer! I can't wait for this nausea to be over

  • @SpaceBurger girl, same. Why don’t they already make ginger sparkling water for the nauseous of the world

  • @sleepy33 :D:D

LaCroix tastes like all other sparkling water to me. I like sparkling water and I think every brand is equally good :shrug emoji:

  • @DuchessOfCambridge you could always try diet ginger ale. Not sure if anyone avoids aspertame, though, so that could be an issue. Also, you could try diet gosling's ginger beer, too, but I'm not sure what the artifical sweetener is...
  • I have an appt tomorrow and I'm kind of freaked out. After recent happenings here with some of our ladies I'm panicked. I have yet to see/hear the heartbeat. I'm desperately hoping to have an ultrasound, but I'm not sure if it will happen. I know I could probably request it if the mobile machine is available. I just wish I could have gotten an appt before 3pm, it's going to be such a long day.

  • @imrachellea I'm feeling the same. Appointment tomorrow at 2:30 that was originally earlier in the day but didn't work with DH's schedule and I really want him there. I hope we all have great appointments!

  • Guys- Has anyone ever switched jobs while pregnant? A new position opened up within my organization that I’ve been prodded to apply for by some colleagues. I’ve literally been in the same position for 12 years and very comfortable in it and can do it in my sleep. It’s comfy right now, but there’s no room for growth for me in this position. I’d make 10% more (or about half LOs day care expenses) but work a lot in March and April planning a conference. I love the team. I love the boss and I really am probably the best internal candidate. Nothing about my benefits or leave situation will change. I feel like I can’t let this opportunity pass me by.
  • @chloe97 I have not switched jobs during pregnancy but my EDD with DD was 8/21 and our company's huge conference (22K attendees) where my team runs a major program started on 8/27. I'm lucky to get to work from home a lot but did have to go in for more meetings and was definitely busier. I was a FTM so no kids at home but it worked out really well for me. I wouldn't let that keep you from applying. I would absolutely say go for it!

  • @chloe97 I have no experience but GO FOR IT!!! It would be pretty sh*tty of them to pass you by when you’ve been loyal to the company so long just because you’re pregnant.

    DD1: June 2014 - VBM4lyfe
    DD2: October 2016
    DC3: coming May 2019

  • @chloe97 you could definitely at the very least apply! Especially since it's at the same company and you could keep your PTO and all other benefits.  I can't believe you've been in the same position for 12 years,  btw!! I could not do that.  But then again, now that i have a child,  maybe I would do that.

  • @mrskoz428 same thing happened to me today! We had conferences 1-3 and they asked for a 3:15 which I agreed to but said I would need to make sure someone could get ds off the bus. They never showed and never called except to say that the kid wouldn’t be here for any of the half days. On top of it another parent called to ask for a later time so I ended giving them a 3:35 time, but had this parent called to say they couldn’t make it I could have scheduled them at 3! So inconsiderate. I also work in a district where parents are very uninvolved (I’m sure it won’t be my only no show) and it can be very disheartening.
  • @imrachellea and @kvh22 I’ve been feeling a little more anxious than usual too after the recent posts. We weren’t able to hear the heartbeat at my 10 week appt, which they told me beforehand it was still early, and we may not hear it; however, I remember hearing it with DS at 10 weeks, so I keep thinking about that and worrying some. They found the heartbeat flickering on the little ultrasound machine, but PGAL brain still has me anxious. My 12 week appointment is on Tuesday. Hope both of your appointments go well tomorrow!

@chloe97 I haven’t changed jobs while pregnant, but it sounds like you’d be a great fit for the job and should go for it if you want it! It sounds like a good opportunity for you!
  • @sleepy33 love the idea of that water, hate the price. Maybe it’ll randomly be in the grocery store one day

@knarlytaurus diet stuff freaks me out so I tend to stay away. I actually don’t like ginger beer or that would be a good option. I’m being difficult haha

@chloe97 I would do it! I get what you mean though. I’m starting school in Jan and I think that will be a bit of a rough transition. You’re job sounds like a dream! Not like, as in easy but as in really awesome.

  • @Stormiewinter I was very frustrated because they asked for this time! Their child has done zero homework in two months, has been involved in two fist fights, and has major anger issues, which terrifies me being pregnant. I really needed to talk to them but they don’t respond to emails, don’t return phone calls, and apparently don’t show up for conferences. Ugh!

If you love seltzer, I'd highly recommend a sodastream. We've had one for years and it's great. If you have the inclination, you can even make your own ginger syrup and cut back some on sugar (here's an example of how easy it is: https://www.thespruceeats.com/homemade-fresh-ginger-ale-recipe-1806054)

Ooo thanks for sharing. I’m totally going to try this with waaaaay less sugar. A sodastream is not in our budget right now but I’ve seen them being given away for free locally sometimes so ill keep an eye out! I know that seems silly because we save money long term but the upfront price tag is hefty lol

  • @poshspice Let me know how the potty training goes! I really wish DS would show more interest in it at home. His daycare teacher told me he’ll go at school, and I was like wait, what?! He wants absolutely nothing to do with it at home. He won’t even sit on his little potty. I feel like he’ll be in diapers until he’s 10 at this rate.

I’m not into decorating for Christmas this early, but I do want to start getting ideas for family (mainly DS) and try to get a head start rather than procrastinating (and stressing out) like I do every year. Anyone else have Christmas present ideas for the kids yet? I thought about a wooden swingset, but most are pretty expensive, and it makes me wonder how much he’d actually use it/how quickly he’d grow out of it.
  • @megsb615 I can only speak to the fact that I had a wooden swing set but I used it from when I was 3 until I was in middle school and now my nieces and nephews use it at their house. It’s lasted 20 years!

  • @mrskoz428 That’s awesome. I would love to have DS and baby #2 love it for years to come. It seems like toys are taking over our house, so I definitely like the idea of his “big present” being an outside toy. 😂
