TTC After a Loss

Lengthy PMS symptoms but no period weeks after D&C

Ladies,
Just needing some insight and experience. I had a D&C 6 weeks ago after finding out at around 7 weeks that we lost our little one. (Blessed to have two healthy little ones at home.) For over a week and a half I’ve had awful PMS-like symptoms: sore boobs, cramping, back pain, and some clear/slight white discharge... but no period. Finally asked my OB who gave me the option to come see her next week or go to immediate care- obviously I chose the later. They ran a pregnancy test, which came up negative and took a culture/swab, which I’ll have to wait for results.

I don’t know if this is somewhat typical- waiting 6 weeks and still no cycle, but all the symptoms and for a long period of time (and more intense than normal)?

Just praying for AF to come so we can move on and I can feel just a tad more normal again.

Re: Lengthy PMS symptoms but no period weeks after D&C

  • I’m so sorry for your loss.  Glad you were able to see someone.  I’ve had 3 d & cs and each one was different.  With my first one, I bled for a while following procedure and period showed up 6 or7 weeks after procedure.  My body gave me pregnancy symptoms before AF arrived so of course I knew I was pregnant but nope.  I only bled a few days after the other 2 and AF showed up 3 to 4 weeks later.  Still had pregnancy symptoms following those D & cs but they were worse the the first go round.  My periods were wonky for months following each MC and it took a few months to return to a “new” normal.  Unfortunately it takes some time to get body back to normal.  I hope this helps.  Hopefully things return to normal for you soon.
  • I can't speak to why you would be experiencing PMS symptoms (but hormones can take some time to balance out after pregnancy) but after my most recent D&C my period took 13 weeks to return.  This obviously isn't typical but it's not unusual to still have no period at the 6 week mark.  Typically if you get to 8 weeks with no period your doctor will give you progesterone to jump start your cycle.

  • Thank you for the encouragement, and good to know about the progesterone. I will meet with my OB next week.
  • Thank you for sharing. Hopefully it returns on its own soon, because these symptoms are no fun!
