Tube tying after baby?

Anyone giving thoughts to bc after baby?

this will be my third and my last. I’ll be having a planned c section so my initial
thought was to have my tubes tied since they are already in there.

I did did my research and felt ok with my decision but anyway I mention it to basically tells me to run the other way and that the side effects are beyond terrible. Mind you, none of these people have done it themselves

My mom had her tubes tied during her C-section with my sister and has never said anything about it being terrible, and I don’t recall her being miserable at all post-op.

I’ll be having a planned C-section, too, and my doc has already mentioned tying my tubes. I haven’t decided if I’m done having kids, though. I’ve always wanted 3, but as I go along in this pregnancy and think about it more, I think I’d be fine with two. Also DH and I have discussed the possibility of adopting in the future so just because we won’t have any more kids the traditional way doesn’t mean we can’t continue to grow our family. I’ve got a few more months to decide.

...of course if there’s two in there now, that’ll make the decision super easy.

My mom also had her tubes tied during her C-section with my brother and never said anything bad about it!  She was also told having more kids would put her life at risk (she has lupus), so being done was a cut and dry decision for her.

My husband and I are definitely hoping to have more kids in the future, so while I won't be getting my tubes tied, I am DEFINITELY already thinking about birth control: this LO will be born 14 months after our daughter because we had issues with the pill (...that I tried to solve by going off it for a month...).  We are thrilled to be pregnant, but we would love to give my body and our wallets and our sanity some time to recoup before a third baby comes along.  Right now, we're thinking an IUD - something we don't need to think about that can be effective for years, but can be removed whenever we decide it's the right time to try again.

@ashtuesday I used the IUD and loved it. Even though we only waited a year before trying again, it was nice to not have to think about it for this past year, especially when dealing with a new baby. It only took one cycle after getting it out for me to get pregnant and I’ve heard lots of other women say they got pregnant immediately or after one cycle.

I am strongly considering getting my tubes tied if I'll be having a C-section (I will likely be a high risk pregnancy due to being a new bariatric sleeve patient as well as having Graves), or having another IUD if I wind up delivering vaginally.

I really feel I'll be one and done, but DH has hinted at being open to another. I have to laugh, being that this one was such an unexpected surprise, and now he's already talking about another :D Men, amirite?

I've had a couple friends get their tubes tied after their c-section and both are super happy they did.  H and I have already talked about it and he's getting a vasectomy.  I've been through more than enough, he can be the one to change his body for our procreation (or lack of) this time.

@ashtuesday I had an IUD before my twins and between them and this pregnancy.  I highly recommend it.  I am sure I'll get another one after this just because it completely does away with my period and it's so easy!

My friend/cousin got her tubes tied during her third c-section three years ago and hasn’t had any problems. I know it took her awhile to convince her doctor to do because she doesn’t like doing them during c-sections. Something about there’s a higher chance of it not working.
@ashtuesday we also go pregnant because we were taking a break from birth control to “reset” my cycle.  I breastfed for 18months(no period the whole time) and went back on the nuvaring right away. Which is what I’ve done before but this time my cycle never went back to normal. It wasn’t completely unplanned, just 6months ahead of schedule

Also DH is already planning getting snipped after this one lol. We’ve always said 3.

My SIL had her tubes tied and has not voiced any issues about it since she had it done in December.

If I weren’t already going to be on the operating table, DH would be getting snipped (if we decide we’re done) but since the doc will already be in there, might as well get it done.

Thanks ladies!!! I just couldn’t believe two of my friends were telling me such horror stories they have heard! My doctor didn’t even bat an eye when I told her my plan to do it and my doc is super open with me, so it seemed osd
    to me!

i can’t imagine I’ll ever want a 4th so this doesn’t scare me as much as it did thinking about doing it after baby #2!

@sheknows6 I was also very recently diagnosed with Graves. Partially why I haven’t participated much thus far as I had joined two other BMB groups in the last few months. I have only recently been on medication and am changing my diet and such but I’m not sure what to expect as far as how they will treat me during pregnancy.

I can honestly say I’m done with all the female versions of birth control. I’ve already had two c sections and would really like a vbac. I’m not going back under the knife and I am just not for hormones or invasive surgeries anymore. My husband can get a vasectomy or we can be abstinent. Lol Truthfully, I’m not sure if we will be done after baby 3 or not so we won’t be making any immediate decisions.

*lurker* It's funny you say this because I would give the exact opposite advice! Wait, give yourself time and make sure you're sure.

Of the five couples I know who have permanent BC (vasectomies for all):

    - two are still within a couple years of having the procedure done.
    - one is almost 20 years past the procedure, never regretted it and are now past child bearing age.
    - one changed their mind a few years later, successfully had the vasectomy reversed, and had another child.
    - one changed their minds a few years later and went to the best specialists in the country who were unable to reverse it. It was very difficult for them. They pursued adoption and had multiple failed heart-breaking placements before finally successfully adopting.

I realize that's all anecdotal, of course, but based on hearing those stories, I would always advocate waiting and making sure and not having something done too quickly. H and I plan for him to ultimately get a vasectomy when we're done having children, but we plan to wait at least the length of the longest spacing between our children after "our last" to make the decision to be sure that "our last" truly is.

@middy411 did your doctor switch you to PTU?

I'm technically in remission- they ceased my meds about six months ago after tapering down, but there is a danger of relapsing after baby is born, since your thyroid typically naturally suppresses during pregnancy. So I'll have to be mindful of accidental thyroid storm and really keep an eye on my levels.

This is my first pregnancy but I would imagine if you're active or in remission that they'll still want to keep an eye on you, and definitely, definitely get switched to PTU if they still have you on methimazole. It's the only pregnancy "safe" anti thyroid med.

This baby (god willing) will be my last and my third c-section so tubal ligation it is. I’m going to be 35 and my H will be 44. No more babies for us.

@sheknows6 wow! I’m so happy for you and that’s amazing that you went into remission. It’s good for me to hear stories like that. Unfortunately, mine was only recently caught and my levels are insanely high so I was switched to PTU the day I called with my BFP. He said there are risks but that it would be riskier for me to go untreated. Which has proven true with my last two unsuccessful pregnancies. I think it definitely can’t help that I’ve been eating Thyroid Healing foods which make me feel better generally. I will be interested to see how my OB visits go. She told me to let them know as soon as I got a BFP... but then the secretary scheduled me for an 8-9 week appointment lol. Oh well

@middy411 8-9 weeks is the normal time frame for a first appt but in your case you may have to bypass the secretary and leave a message for the nurse. I always leave messages on the nurse line because I know they will talk to my doctor directly and know my situation better then the secretaries. With my first my doctors’ PA gave me her direct line because I was having issues with the head nurse not treating my concerns seriously(luckily she’s gone now).
