Re: PAIF Graduates - New Mommies - August 2018

  • Brooks is 6 months old today! He did great at his appointment and only cried a few seconds for his shots. He's 26 inches, but on 13 lb 13 oz, so the doctor said we really need to get two solid meals a day in him since he drinks 30 oz of formula already. We started purees last week, he just doesn't really seem interested in food. Guess we will keep practicing.  I thought about BLW, but I'm not sure I want daycare dealing with that until he is a little older, he's only 4.5 month adjusted.

  • Awe look at those handsome boys!  :)
TTC 4 years. 7 failed IUI's with either Clomid, Femara and/or Trigger Shots. Started IVF journey in February 2017. Polyps removed in May. 1st IVF Transfer September 26th. BFP. Expected due date 6/14/18. Baby boy born 5/25/18 at 6 lb 9 oz. My bundle of joy.
  • Nursery ~~~ !  Sneak peek #1!
Got the bookshelf/toy storage unit set up last weekend. The tv's been there forever since this was a den previously and we decided not to remove yet.  It's not cable connected and only has a firetv stick; my husband is going to set up a local file server so we can watch disney movies and such on it when she's a older). I love the organized chaos of the storage furniture. I need more boxes for the shelves so I'll probably pop over to Target to get one or two more.

The big glowy thing is a nightlight shaped like an owl - see below! I found it at IKEA and its really cute! It just never comes out in pictures, even when I don't use flash.

On going work in progress, but I'm very happy with the results so far.

  • @JWatt5 Happy birthday Parker! Love that you shared more photos here! Milk & cookies, what a cute theme!  Are you doing a party for him? We are lucky we can do Eli's party on his actual birthday since it falls on a Sunday.

So we are heading into the dr for the one year well-baby and vaccinations next week. I'm 100% sure we will be given the go to transition to whole milk. Anyone have any advice? Did you guys experience stomach problems? Or did any of your babies refuse it? I think we'll be ok, Eli isn't terribly picky. But wanted to hear some of your experiences.

We just got back from a road trip up to Lake Erie. Eli had his first taste of ice cream and a french fry while we were on our mini-vacation. He loved both, but especially the ice cream, of course!

  • @latershrader good luck at the doc! We didn't have any issues - we were very lucky. Zoey was eating about 7-8 ounces of formula when we go the go ahead and we started with 1oz:6oz for a day, then 2oz:5oz then next and so on. I was more concerned she might not like it because it was so cold but she actually loved it! Good luck :)

  • @latershrader We switched cold turkey to whole milk in a cup for her meals and still give a bottle a day of breast milk in the afternoon right now. We just tried putting cold milk in the cup and she drank it without any issues. It's been 3 days so far and hasn't had any issues. Next week, we'll swap the last bottle to milk in a cup too. That just leaves breastfeeding.
  • Thanks everyone!! Leading up to the day...emotional. The day of, it was just fun! Haha. We’re having a party with Family this weekend!

We went straight to the milk. Parker will drink it out of the straw cup for his afternoon one but we’re formula for the morning, nap, bed. Today I did milk in a bottle for his nap and he drank it so differently - like he would have in the straw cup, not consistent like when he sucks a bottle of formula back. We have our 12m appt tomorrow for more suggestions from our doc. I know she had told us whole milk but we just don’t do cows milk here so he’s been having fortified coconut milk.

  • Question for those of you with some older babies:

June is going through a screaming phase. Like, not because shes upset, just because she wants attention or gets excited, or something. She does it a lot when eating. The problem is that it is EXTREMELY LOUD. Like legit hurts my ear drums. I dont know how to get her to stop because I am not sure how to 'correct' behavior in an 11 month old! Its really driving me nuts! Every time I say "no" firmly and shake my head, she shakes her head too and laughs bc she loves that motion these days. So that doesnt work lol. I can't stay frustrated with her because shes too adorable but its making me dread meal time with all the yelling in my old lady 33 year old ears  ;)

  • @omarismyhomeboy - my nephew Jack is a screamer. I think it wasn’t until he was 1.5y or so that he really started responding to being asked to be quiet. My sister was told by her doc to distract. Kinda like ok you want attention, hush hush & here’s a toy to turn you attention to. So you aren’t giving her what she’s demanding (your attention - but of course sometimes you will) but it does often make it stop.

  • @omarismyhomeboy Mackenzie went through a very short phase of screaming loudly when excited. For her, it was over stimulation. She seemed to just outgrow it for the most part. We would respond quietly or ignore and pretend she hasn't made a loud noise. Not sure if that's any help or not.
  • @omarismyhomeboy Instead of "no" we started using the sound "ah ah" and he seems to respond. Like June, he laughs at "no" and head shaking. But the "ah ah" or "eh eh" in a harsh tone really gets him to stop doing whatever he isn't supposed to be doing. My mom keeps telling me the less we say "no" the better so he doesn't learn it and start using it on us! Good luck!!

  • @omarismyhomeboy Zoey went through this phase somewhere around 9 months because I asked about it at her 9 month appointment. My ped said it's completely normal and that her kids did it too as she remembers walking around the grocery store wanting to crawl under the cart and die (which I had felt too). It didn't last long but, oh my, the level of her voice was truly painful on the ears so I feel your pain. She's just 'finding her voice' and this, too, shall pass!

  • Graham screeches. Which I’d ignore but my daughter thinks it’s hilarious to do it back and they have screeching wars. They laugh hysterically and I can’t help but laugh too.. it’ll pass, hopefully ;)

older baby question, what are favorite snacks for your littlest? Graham has 4 teeth and eats softer finger foods pretty well. Little man is a tank so our dr said we can do snacks (on top of the 3 meals and nursing on demand), he can already out eat his big sis. We do Cheerios and baby yogurt and cheese, I’m blanking on other good snacks. He’s eating what we eat for meals at this point, just deconstructed to make them finger foods for him. But on the go snacks I’m blanking on, he has a ton of Cheerios at this point ;)
  • @Polythene Pam goldfish are the current favorite. We give those, animal crackers, vanilla wafers, saltines, any kind of cheese, yogurt, fruit, etc.
  • @PolythenePam we do the same as @persnickity and also do mini muffins, applesauce pouches, yogurt pouches and mandarin oranges, blueberries, bananas.

@Polythene Pam soft fruit is a great way to start. We started with peeling the skin of pears even to make them really easy to chew/gum.
  • We have a professional tummy roller in the house now (who is making me freak out at bedtime since she loves to sleep on her tummy and side now -- pediatrician said it was OK now to let her spontaneously change position since it meant she has the strength to adjust herself if she gets into a bad spot. I still am NOT okay with it!!).

I thought back to tummy was supposed to come after tummy to back? She doesn't try rolling onto her back much, sometimes she squirms like she is trying to but can't quite do it. Of course, two weeks ago she wasn't rolling onto her tummy either so it's likely just a matter of time...just my mommy nerves going into overdrive. She is definitely trying to scoot/crawl now when she's on her tummy and has the strength to reach for toys while maintaining her head up. She's not mobile yet, but she can shuffle/scoot around a bit in her pack n play to get closer to toys/etc.

I was thinking of getting one of those foam playmats for her since I am concerned about allergens in the rug in her nursery (we have two dogs and a cat and they do hang out in there with me from time to time).  I would like to be able to put her down with a couple toys and give her a little independent playtime -- that seems to be when she tests her limits with her motor skills/etc.

She is also getting long for her age so I'm running out of clothes that aren't too snug lengthwise. I had hoped the 3-6 month clothes would last longer (she's just turned 5 months), but I'm going to have to switch to 6-9 months now I think. Time to go shopping since I have almost nothing!

I'm torn over what to do with her old clothes -- we aren't planning on another baby and given my history, it would likely not happen anyway without more IVF - but giving her baby stuff away really feels like I'm shutting the door.

  • @mbradfo2 Congrats on the rolling over, it's a whole new world once they start to move on their own! We got one of those foam playmats but they get just as dirty as the rug from the dogs/cats.They like to "play" on them too! LOL! And about the clothes...I still have all of Eli's clothes. He grew SO fast that some of them he never even got to wear. I am probably going to take a lot of it to a consignment shop but I'm keeping a few favorites. It's hard to let go for sure considering I don't feel like I'm done having babies. But we'll see what the cards hold....

  • @mbradfo2 the first few nights Brooks slept on his stomach I was so freaked out.  Now we lay him on his back and unless he is exhausted he immediately rolls to his tummy to sleep.  He also wiggles until he gets to the top corner of his crib.  For whatever reason the kid insists on sleeping with his head in the corner.

We just switched to 6 month clothes this weekend. I've found Ross to be a great place to buy clothes.  They had a 3 piece Carter's set (long sleeve onsie, short sleeve onsie, and a pair of pants) for $8.99.  Carter's is next door and they had the exact same set for $22.  Carter's was also having a 50% everything (even clearance items) this weekend.  It may still be going on.

I took a whole tub of Brooks's old clothes to Once Upon a Child and got $40, so better than nothing.  The rest I'm going to donate to the Salvation Army.  I hate throwing them away and don't have anyone to give them to currently.  You could also sell on the Facebook Marketplace.  I see tons of clothes on there and have actually bought some from there as well.
  • @mbradfo2 - yay!!! Zoey rolled back to tummy first too and it was weeks later before she went tummy to back. No idea why! As for the clothes - we were in the same boat. It's hard knowing that every first will also be my last and it took me awhile to start to give things away/consign them but, once I started, holy cow - I couldn't stop. I'm very Type A though and it was the organization that drove me. I took everything to Kidding Around (a resale shop) and chose the store credit which is more than cash and now we shop there all the time!

@MMD1986 - that's great to hear about Ross, we have one opening in the area in the next couple of weeks! Also, Zoey sleeps with her head in the corner too lol.

  • @mbradfo2 - Parker hates tummy time and quickly rolled tummy to back but didn’t roll back to tummy more than a couple times until he was 9m. Haha. You put him on his tummy and he’d immediately roll over.

Parkers backpack just arrived and it made my cry. I don’t want to leave my boy...so wish I could work part time. Back to work tuesday and he starts daycare Wednesday.

  • I think I'll look for one of those consignment shops in my area! It's kind of bittersweet, but I think life is like that in general...

Thanks for the shopping tips -- I'm definitely going to check out Ross this weekend and probably Marshall's too. Labor day sales, right?  I was actually going to go there yesterday after runing some chores, but it started pouring when I got the stroller out of the car and I just decided to go home instead. Baby was probably hitting the edge of her tolerance for shopping anyway!

I'm going to try to figure out how to get over my nerves with her sleeping in whatever position she chooses -- last night I actually slept rather than watching her like a hawk and we were fine...I just need more days like that and I'll probably be OK with her choosing her own sleeping position (esp. since the doctor reiterated to me today that she'll be fine since she has such good neck control and tummy time habits). It's sorta like when she was first born and I could hardly sleep because I kept watching her, checking her swaddle, etc. I'll be so glad when we hit 6 months in a few weeks!

  • A little off topic but...maybe a topic we don’t discuss. A mama turned friend from the August 2017 Bump Group (yes I stuck with the crazy group hahaha) wrote this wonderful article. Thought I’d share (sorry for the repeat share with those of you on Facebook or Insta).

  • Anyone have any fun Labor Day plans?  We are heading to Knoxville bright and early tomorrow.  Its a 9.5 hour car ride.  Brooks normally does great in his car seat so hopefully this isn't a disaster.
  • My baby turned 5 months old this week! Time flies. He doesn’t seem to mind the tummy time much since he learned to roll onto his belly himself. He loves rolling onto his belly but he doesn’t flip back often. A few times with enough momentum he rolled completely onto his back again.

This weekend we are shaving his head. His head is looking quite patchy with some baby hair falling off and some continuing to grow. While shaving undoubtedly will improve the look, I’m a bit sad that we are going to lose his wild and crazy hair.

  • I’m so stressing that Bryson goes to daycare next week and I start work again. The daycare he is going to is great but I don’t want to leave him yet. Ahhhh this stinks. My husband and I are going to have to fight for time with him when we get home when now I spend all day with him so my husband loves to spend the night with him while I cook etc.
    sorry just venting... :(

  • @Holls214 - Parker starts daycare/I go back to work next week (we’ll Tuesday) too. I’m not at all looking forward to it. I feel ya mama...I’m a mess over here.

  • Oh no!!! I know. It’s terrible... I’m so so sad. I really like my job but wish I could just have some more time with him. Do you work full time also? I am so dreading it. We have the money for me to stay home but I make too much for it to make sense and that extra income is nice. I work with State/Federal funded programs and they are discussing some major budget cuts which would suck but that would mean a layoff for me which honestly I wouldn’t be opposed to. ;)

  • @mbradfo2 My baby is the same way. Now he will immediately roll onto his tummy when I put him down but can’t seem to roll back. He does it once in a while but not consistently. My baby sleeps in this bassinet that straps him down so he won’t rollover but we are thinking of putting him in his crib soon. I think I will be comfortable once he knows how to flip onto his back.

I’m not sure how the baby clothing sizes are determined. My baby is small (he’s ~25 percentile weight and height) yet he is sizing out of 6 months clothes even though he just turned 5 months.

  • @Holls214 - I do work full time as an HR Manager. My DH took a new job in the spring which gives him time at home with us working 8-4pm (rather than leaving at 6am and not getting home until 7pm) but I means I’m now the higher earning one in the house.
So I work full time with a 45-60 min commute each way. Parker is coming to the City I work in for the first 6 months. I’m hoping he’s ok seeing as we go in to town 3 out of 5 days now and it’s a 45 min drive to what we usually do.

I dream of being laid off lol so I can stay home with him longer. I’d love the do the 18 month Leave next time if we could swing it but yah...money right lol. Even when we have two, working still makes more sense so, I’ll keep dreaming of winning the lottery haha. I’m atleast very fortunate to have my children in Canada with great maternity leave options.
