Re: Favorite baby names

  • @bdesterhouse Cybil sounds a little old lady-ish to me (and oddly unisex at the same time). What other names do you like? Maybe we can come up with a few more.

If you're going for old fashioned names I'd suggest Constance, Flora, Ada, Beatrice, Celia, Georgette, Marjorie, Mavis, Maxine, Meredith...

  • See @meggyme that’s what I was wondering too if it was unisex. Unisex names are a no for me which is getting harder since so many are naming their daughters what some would consider ‘boy’ names.

I dont want a traditional older name, just something that’s not used all the time and stands out as this is her name to my husband and I if that makes sense. *tw* We didn’t have this issue with our daughter who passed. *emd tw*  We had her name picked before we were even married.

  • @bdesterhouse I prefer less common names too, and DH and I have definitely had a few disagreements about it. I had Miriam, Sabrina, Meradith, and Alexandra on my list!
  • @bdesterhouse I don't think people would immediately think Downton Abbey with that name. The unisex feel might come from it sounding so similar to the male name Cyril.

I have taken such a relaxed attitude with names lately, honestly. Having grown up with a super common name, I have always admired people with unique or underused names. It's so refreshing and I'll bet they've never had their last initial tacked on the end as a differentiator or experienced when someone calls your name, you look and "Oh, sorry, not you" or hearing your name come up multiple times in conversation but knowing everyone is talking about someone else by that name.

So I love the idea of picking an underused name, but the name is also underused for a reason (meaning you'll probably run into a lot of people where it's not their style. Otherwise it would be a trendy name). Once a baby's face is tied to the name, no one thinks about personal style anymore. So unless the name is setting the child up for a rough time (I believe I mentioned my baby cousin Marijana here before), I support any name a parent loves for their child.
  • @bdesterhouse I am pretty sure Cybil is a feminine name and not unisex but there is a varient Sibylla or Sybella which gives it a more feminine ending that I think would prevent any confusion.
  • @mayoduck Henry is out now. My bff just had a son last year named Henry and I babysat a terrible kid last school year named Henry. We now both dislike the name greatly  :D

  • I think that Cybil with the CY was making me think of Cyrus which is definitely masculine. Somehow Sibyl doesn’t look as masculine as Cybil, although I do think of Harry Potter’s Sibyl Trelawney.

  • @bdesterhouse I never heard of Cybil before, but like @meggyme said I have seen Sybil before and I quite like it! Cecile or Cecily is kind of similar too if you like a C name?
  • edited October 2018
    @bdesterhouse I don’t think Cybil or Sybil
are masculine. Just  to throw it out there, I know a woman named Sibel (pronounced Sib- bell) which could be another option if you like it.

@mamaoftwomonkeys Cecile is so cute! My good friend just named her baby Celia Mae.
  • @mschanandlerbong1214 Oh! Haha, well, that settles that then!
  • @bdesterhouse Not too Downton at all. My Downton name if this one was a girl was Cora. I’ve always loved that name, but alas, we are having a boy.
  • Bump @nb1994 here’s the name thread.

  • @bdesterhouse I like your choice of Cybil. It sounds sophisticated & classic to me, not masculine at all. When she’s little you can call her Cybbie (Sibbie) if you’re into nicknames or if people think it sounds too stuffy for a LO. When I was a kid there was a famous actress/model named Cybill Shepherd. You could add a feminine spelling like Cybille.

Other unique but similar names are Simone and Simona/Symona.

@indigoheightsblog You have some good choices. My favorite is Margot James. It’s pretty and the most unique combination. Not sure how long your baby’s last name will be, but what about StevieLee James? That’s cute.

Two of my friends named their daughters Indie, & I have several acquaintances who did as well—I think it’s becoming a pretty common name. Also cute, just not as unusual as your other choices.
  • @keikilove thanks! we definitely love them all and that’s what makes it hard. My brother has two first names strung together (JonPaul) with no space and I’ve alwaus found it weird..... even at 8 years old I wondered why my parents did that LOL - so we’ll either go with Stevie Lee or Stevie Jane. Our last name is Eidelman... Indie Eidelman sounds best in my opinion but my preference fluctuates daily!
  • Hi all! I am having a difficult time with coming up with a name. I was absolutely convinced that baby was a girl so I had only been considering girl names. However, we have since found out that LO is a boy. My DH and I had already agreed when we first started talking about kids that if we had a boy he would have my DH's middle name of Lee. Any suggestions for a first name? So far I feel like I'm all over the place with my small list:

    • Waylyn
    • Iian
    • Shawn
    • Blake
    • Wyatt

  • @cancer2988 Hi there! I'm totally with you on boys names being harder than girls'! I have a daughter and am pregnant with another girl so don't have to come up with one. Phew! Of your list, I like Wyatt best, and think it goes best with Lee. Good luck choosing a name!
  • @cancer2988 I am completely stumped on boy names as well! We have a looong list with no front runners at all!

    FWIW, I like Wyatt :)
  • My seven year old is Wyatt so I’m biased, that one has my vote. Waylon is second.

  • I like Wyatt ...

We are stuck with boy names too! We have a good list of girl names and are struggling with boy names. We just found out today that we are having a boy... we are using my moms maiden of Wilson as a middle name these are the options we have come up with so far:

    Calvin
    Caiden
    Carter

No loyalty to “C” names lol it just seemed to work out that way. I love Owen but DH refuses because of the actor. We also already have an 18 month old that’s Lucas. Thanks in advanced!
  • @ashley14598 All sound like good names to go along with Wilson. I almost agreed that I really liked the name Owen as well until it hit me it's an actors name lol But idk I still like it and Wilson would be a middle name, so not like it would register with a lot :)

  • @kristimh80 right?!? That was my argument when we had DS too! I don’t see DH going for it ... we have now taken carter off the list and are leaning toward Calvin.
  • edited October 2018
@ashley14598 I think all of your options sound good with Wilson. I really like Caiden.

I don’t have a lot of suggestions for boys. We’re having a girl this time. My son is Jack so obviously that’s a favorite of mine. My nephew is Lucas and his brother is Charles, but goes by Charlie.

Also, my son is turning 18 months in a couple of weeks. We’ll have a similar age gap.  :)
  • @chocolatelemons aww I love that they will be close in age I hope it makes them close growing up! Charlie is also on our list but wasn’t at the top I may have to rethink that one  I’m a teacher so names are even that much harder! I
  • @cancer2988 not on your list but thought might be your style based on your names. What about Smith? One of my friends just named her son that and I LOVE it.

@indigoheightsblog I really like all of your options but my favorites are Stevie Jane, Margot Jane, and India Lee. They are all beautiful!

    @m3ganmc really like Sullivan (Sully)!

We are stuck, currently can only agree on (Jameson) James. Husband brought up Salvatore a few times. It's a family name on both of our sides but I just can't do it. We have a Jackson.. so Jackson and Salvatore. NOPE.
  • @Shelbyville30 what about Sal, Saul, or Tory? You could still honor them without it being the same name.

  • @bdesterhouse I think that’s so cute! MH has actually been pulling for Elizabeth as a middle name for LO!

@meggyme Out of those three I would totally go for Tory.

Although, My uncle Sal named his son Tori as a tribute to my grandfather so someone in the family has dibs on it.

    Thanks!
  • @bdesterhouse That’s a great name! And how exciting that you have one picked out and agreed on!
  • @bdesterhouse - that name is adorable!

  • @bdesterhouse I love the balance of unisex Parker with feminine Elizabeth! It's such a great feeling to call LO in the belly by name. Makes it all feel so real!
  • We are going to get serious about names, now that we know the genders (boy/girl twins). We have tons of boy names but none we really like for girls that go with the boy names. Our plan is to go with the same letter but not too rhyming or matchy otherwise. We are thinking Luke or Logan for our boy. Stumbled on Lacy in the baby book last night, but I’m really torn on the spelling. I like it simpler but I think Lacey is more common. Thoughts?

@3rdtime_charmed I’ve seen it spelled both ways and never batted an eye at either. Pick the one you love and eff what people think lol it’s not like you’re adding a bunch of unnecessary letters lol

  • @3rdtime_charmed I have only met one and she is Lacey but I say go with what you like. I'm Katie and that is BY FAR the most common spelling of that name but I can't tell you how many people assume it's Katy. I have met dozens of Katie's in my life and not a single Katy (one K.D. but no Katy) so I can only assume Katy Perry is to blame for this. Anyway.. personal rant over lol. Moral of the story is if more than one spelling exists, there will be times your daughter has to correct people. So go with whichever you like!
  • @3rdtime_charmed My parents named me Tracy with just a -y because it was the most popular spelling at the time. My mom made sure to go around looking at all of the novelty gifts with names on them and saw that spelling was more popular. Well, at some point while I was growing up Tracey became more popular and my mom always complained about it anytime we went on vacation. Good news is that I never really cared that I couldn't find a personalized novelty license plate with my name on it though I guess it bugged my mom!
