GTKY Throw Back Thursday

Think back to when you first started dreaming of what you would name your kids. What were some of the names? Do you still like any of them?

Re: GTKY Throw Back Thursday

  • For twins I wanted Kimberly and Amberly when I was little (those were my best friends mom and sisters names haha). Other names have included Xavier, Alexandria, Jessie(girl), Jaylah, Andres, Ayden. Last pregnancy too two picks for most the pregnancy were Violet and Asher.

I’m not really a fan of any of them now.
  • We originally agreed on Blake for a boy but then decided against it. For a girl, we loved the name Michaela but then used Michael for DS so we wouldn’t use it now.

I honestly never thought I would get married or have children so I never put much thought into my future children’s names. I didn’t talk baby names until shortly before DH and I were married.

  • For a girl we had Evelyn or Elise/Elyse. For a boy we had Killian or August.

We didnt use either of those for our DD (she just didn’t fit either girl names). We (I) have a long list of boy and girl names. Hoping to be team green this go around but H is against it so we will see.

  • I have always liked Charlotte, but it's way too common, and it will be even more common for the next few years because of the British royal family. I don't like weird, out there names, but I also don't want the super common ones where my child will have two friends with the same name.

I had names picked out for future kids when I was still a child playing with dolls :# Can’t remember them all (but I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s written down in a journal somewhere), just that I wanted twin girls named Lydia and Lillian. It must’ve been some intense pretend mothering, because I didn’t think about TTC until I was 34 :D

ETA: I’m not a fan of either name now, but I do love names with L so I’ll be on the lookout for those.
  • @navete I found a whole list I made in a jewelry box. I found it when I was pregnant with DD. I had to have made the list when I was like 12. I always wanted to be a mom.
  • When I was growing up I want thriplet boys named Brayden, Jayden, and Cayden. ( I laught at myself now) and for a little girl I wanted Molly, then I learned it means bitter.

My husband and I instantly agreed on our oldest son's name before we were even married, his name is Wyatt and we agreed right away on our daughter's name, Kali.

If all goes well with this baby, then they will likely be nameless until eviction day. (SCD)

@JLaVO888 That must’ve felt like such a treasure to find! Do you still have the list?

I had always wanted to be a mom too! This thread and being pregnant in general got me to thinking why I waited so long to TTC and I’ve made a connection that’s been both illuminating and triggering.

    *TW death mentioned*
My mom passed away when I was 16 and I never really made the connection that that may be why I was turned off to being a mother myself (grief and fear manifest themselves in strange ways). She had breast cancer and passed away at age 37 so in the back of my mind I harbored a fear of dying early and leaving a child motherless. I only experienced it as a child, but that mother bond is so powerful and other worldly. My mother was an amazing woman and I’m sad she’s not here with me through this pregnancy. Writing this out has been incredibly cathartic, thank you for letting me share  <3
  • @navete So many hugs. Ugh I can’t imagine that fear. I’ve been watching parenthood on Netflix and spoiler alert
The mom gets breast cancer. She has a new baby and I just ball every episode thinking about it.
Glad you could get that off your chest. Always here to listen!
  • @navete Found the list!!

  • @navete I’m so sorry for your loss! I’m glad you were able to make the connection and that it helped to write it out.

@JLaVO888 I love it! Do you remember how you came up with those names? I’m pretty sure I had Taylor and Brad on my list (Hollywood crushes lol) I’m assuming none of those names are contenders now due to your earlier comment...but I’ll still hold my tongue on a comment until I get a green light  :p

@char245 Thank you. Took me a little bit by surprise (it’s been 18 years so I figured I’d thought through every angle by now). Always good to learn and grow though, and I’m thinking I may need to take up journaling through this pregnancy.

@HarryPotterandCats How did you decide what name fit your DD? I’ve heard of some traditional cultures where the baby is named well after birth when the family can get a feel for their personality and let the name “come to them”. I would love to do that, but it seems impractical with getting documents, traveling etc.

@lovesclimbing Charlotte is a beautiful name, but I can definitely understand not wanting a overly common name.

@bdesterhouse Seems a lot of us wanted multiples as kids, but triplets take the cake :D What does SCD stand for btw? Sorry if it’s an obvious one (too many possibilities on Google search)

  • @navete Go ahead and tear it apart. lmao  Those twin names are a f$&!inf mouth full. The only one I still remotely like is Tyler but DH hates it. I just know my best friends mom was named Kimberly and her sister was named Amberly and we would always play house. Ironically she is now my next door neighbor but we lost touch in our teens so we’ve just started hanging out again.

@JLaVO888 As soon as I saw Christal/Kristal rap songs started looping in my head and I had visions of Hollywoodites popping bottles of Cristal in the back of a leather clad limo  :D

@navete I can definitely relate to your experience. Same age, same experience, other parent. I definitely think it’s the reason I didn’t want to get married or have kids. It’s interesting to meet someone else from a similar mindset.

@christac1010  I’m sorry you went through a similar experience. It’s hard not to be deeply affected at that age <3

SCD = Scheduled C Section :) Not sure if that is the accurate acronym or not.

  • When I was little I was obsessed with the name Odette from the swan princess. Not a fan as an adult. My sister and I used to pretend we were twins named Kelsey and Kendra (she is Miriam and I am Abigail)
  • @abbykwail, I kind of love Odette.

  • @mill1020 you are welcome to use it if you have a little girl!!
  • @abbykwail, We make a lot of boys, so I’ll be shocked if we have a girl!  And my DH refuses to even consider Odette.  But thanks :)

Any name nerds here?  I have a major obsession with Nameberry.

  • When I was little I was obsessed with the name Hannah I loved it so much! When I played school my best friends name was always Hannah and sometimes I changed my name to Hannah. I’m a bit older so this was way before Hannah Montana. I also loved the names Katie and Sarah. I have nothing against any of those names now but none of them on our lists haha
  • @mill1020 I am SUCH a name nerd. I love nameberry!
  • @bdesterhouse Nameberry.com is a baby names website.  Hugely addicting.

@greenbee, I have the same screen name (or whatever it’s called these days) on there and post stuff waaay too often.  Haha.  What names are you considering?

  • @mill1020 I have way too many ideas right now, but for every 50 names I like, my husband vetoes about 49 of them. Haha. My favorite is Iris for a girl (He's not sold). I also love Willa/Willow and Lydia. For a boy, I like Miles/Milo, Dawson, and Grant... just to name a few.
We already have a daughter (whose name kind of came out of nowhere after brainstorming for months), and I want to make sure whatever we choose kind of "goes with" her name - without being too matchy - ya know?
    What are your frontrunners?
  • Have you guys heard of/used the app called "Baby Name"? It is yellow with a white egg. Anyways it's pretty much the tinder for baby names. You and SO swipe left and right until you have name matches. It is fun!!
  • @JLaVO888 I haven't heard of that, but I'm going to look it up... Sounds fun!
  • @JLaVO888 Ooh, I might need that app!  DH and I had an awful time agreeing on a name for DS. The great name war of 2016 will go down in history in our house.
  • Ooh, @greenbee, your list is excellent.  I love Lydia, Iris, and Miles, too.  And we must have the same husband...mine loves to veto or make fun of evvverything I like.
Ok, so here are my boy names (we have kind of a presidential first name thing going with our sons’ names, so we’d try to stay with that):  Franklin “Frankie”, Theodore “Teddy”, or Calvin “Cal”.  For girls, I currently love Rose, Tabitha, Sarah, and Audrey.  I absolutely adore Anna, too, but we can’t use it for several reasons.
