I just had my GD test and 28 week appointment. I have concerns about my weight gain. I am by no means thin, I am athletic, teach group fitness classes and would consider myself slightly chubby. I also have ridiculous anxiety so of course I would freak out over this. I lost 7 lbs first trimester and until this appointment, I have not gained any weight. It worried me as she has to weigh something! The past month I gained 3 lbs, so the doctor is not worried and said I will see more weight gain this trimester. My belly measurement was right on track and her heart rate is fine. Huge sigh of relief.
I do still have a yeast infection still that I was worried about due to an antibiotic, so he prescribed me a RX suppository to use. I am glad I had him check. I feel like my appointment was a little rushed because I had to get back to the lab so they could do my blood draw for my GD test and he was running late, but I think I got everything answered. Crossing fingers my blood work comes back fine from my GD test.
I have a regular check up appt today and for the first time this pregnancy I'm nervous and unhappy about going. It's a new midwife again cause I still have a couple more to meet and I'm scared she's going to suck like the last one did. The first 2 that I met were awesome but that last one was just so bad. I'm also just grumpy about having to go anywhere cause I slept badly last night and I just want to go back to sleep.
@lisac113 last pregnancy I didn't gain a lot of weight until the third trimester. Also I assume I lost a lot of muscle during the first and early second trimester when I basically stopped all exercise (not really your case) so that always complicates weight measurements. Sounds like your doctor isn't worried though so that's good
I just had my 28 week appointment and ultrasound - my placenta has moved up!!!! Hallelujah! And the baby is so big! He is in the 89th percentile. Already 3.5 pounds. He is measuring over 2 weeks ahead.
I got my Tdap shot. Confirmed that I’m taking the right amount of iron for my anemia, and pee’d in a cup for the first time this pregnancy (I have no idea why they don’t have patients do this earlier, but they don’t).
I scheduled the rest of my appointments - which totally freaked me out! The doctor wants 1 more ultra sound which I think is to make sure the baby is not too big for me to deliver. Which also freaked me out. They don’t think he will be too big, just big.
They also mentioned doing kick counts after I said that there are days when he doesn’t seem as active. The doctor said he should move at least 6 times an hour. She said drink something cold, sit back and relax, and focus on movement. Count every little movement. And call them if it’s fewer than 6 in the hour.
Today's appointment was... Interesting? Midwife was great. Listened to me, answered questions, gave advice, sent in referral for physical therapy cause my pelvis is so bad. I got really upset though cause when I walked in the nurse says, "so you're doing your glucose tolerance test today?" Uh. No. Then she starts to explain what it is and that I'll be there for an hour (outside of my midwife appt) and I said, "no, I know what it is, but no I'm not doing it today because no one told me that was today and I can't stay that long because I have to be able to pick my son up from school." It just super pissed me off that the bad midwife scheduled me for a thing and didn't tell me or that the practice just always does them but still it was her not telling me that it was next. Between that and huffing and puffing my way over from the parking garage in 100°+heat my blood pressure reading was just a tiny bit below pre-eclamptic and got the nurse all nervous. (After resting though it went down to an ok number.) I described my abdomenal clenching to the new midwife (just like I did the bad midwife) and she said that it's definitely a Braxton Hicks. Even though it's just a single long lasting clench, it's a Braxton Hicks. Which is of course the opposite of what the bad midwife said. I hate with a firey passion when docs in the same practice give contradictory advice/answers/whatever. Speaking of which, the nurse told me to fast for the GD test and I almost bit her head off asking her to explain why. She kinda explained but I tuned her out cause she was answering but it wasn't a proper medical answer so I wasn't going to listen. When I asked the midwife she immediately shook her head and said no, don't fast. Like don't eat 5 donuts and a smoothie, but sure have some eggs. I haaaaaaaaate that. Train your damn assistant. The left hand needs to know what the freaking right have is doing, ok? I asked about if you get whatever midwife is on call or if you have any choice and she confirmed that you get who you get based on total luck of the draw with who's on call. Then I learned that of the 4 midwives (3 good, 1 bad) that the first and my favorite doesn't do deliveries! So I have a 1 in 3 chance of getting the bad one!!! Except that no, it's a 1 in 5 cause there's 2 other midwives but they only work over in labor and delivery so I wouldn't be able to meet them in advance... So 1 in 5 of getting the one I don't like, 2 in 5 of getting a complete stranger or 2 in 5 chance of getting a midwife I know and like. Sigh. The appt took so long that I couldn't get home in time to pick up my son (hubby was able to go, so the school didn't have to call the cops or anything, but it was a last minute scramble and it stressed me out.) I got home on the verge of tears from hunger, heat and frustration and ate a lot of cookies. (Oh, and I weighed an amount at my appointment today that made me feel sadness No one there said anything about my weight, but I was unhappy to see that high of a number.)
Brief highlight was the scheduler for my growth scan who saw my age when she pulled up my chart and did a double take and asked if I was really turning 40 or if it was a typo. I said, yep, I'm 39 now and will be 40 a bit after the baby is born. She shook her head just a little and said that I did not look even close to being 40. That moment didn't suck
@stothi my practice has 5 OBs who all do delivery, except one was out on maternity leave herself at the end of my last pregnancy, so they had a guy (the rest were women) filling in on deliveries 1 shift per week. I ended up in labor for days....Anyway, one of the OBs I did not like when I saw her in the office I actually loved during labor! It was like night and day. And after days of labor not progressing I was finally about to go for a c-section, and the one random guy was on duty! I was freaking out...and then my primary and favorite OB came on duty at the last minute and did it. Maybe you’ll have similar good luck with your midwives!
@stothi glad you liked the midwife you met today, but sorry the appointment was so stressful. I know you’re glad your H was around and able to help pick up your son from school.
I had a check up today at 30+3. Passed my glucose test! I had to have a follow up US to check placenta position at 28 weeks because they couldn’t get accurate pictures at my AS, so we went over that too. I have to go back for yet another ultrasound at 34 weeks to see if the placenta has moved.
I was already waiting for an hour and a half, and had my toddler son with me, so I was getting pretty irritable by the time I seen my doctor. Meaning I definitely did not ask questions that I should have. All I asked was what it means if it doesn’t move. Apparently we’ll be possibly looking at a c-section. She also instructed me to go to the hospital if there’s any bleeding or spotting. So I guess I have a low lying placenta, or something along those lines. I feel so stupid for not asking questions. Ugh.
@stothi sorry for the stressful appointment. That's a big pet peeve of mine too when different practitioners within the same group give wildly different information. Also sucky about your BP being high initially. Is there anyway you can get there like 5-10 minutes earlier to let yourself rest so that your BP is more likely to be normal? Also, I feel you on the whole not knowing who will be delivering my baby. My OB who delivered my son is still at my practice, and there are 2 others. I've met one of them once, but then the third is just a temporary fill in since one of the doctors left back in December. So who knows, hopefully I'll jive well with all of them. I hope your next appointment is uneventful.
@dairygirl93 don't beat yourself up for not asking questions! I would have done the same thing if I had my toddler tagging along. How long do you have to wait until your next appointment? If you're feeling particularly anxious about it, I'd make a list and call during business hours to see if you can speak with a provider. Or make sure someone can watch your toddler next time so you can think more clearly and ask questions. I hope your placenta moves, I know we've had several on this board dealing with the same concern!
@stothi I’m sorry for such a crappy and stressful appointment. This probably won’t be a consolation, but when I was pregnant with DS, one of the seven midwives in the practice was just not for me. The others ranged from fine to amazing, but her bedside manner and personality really rubbed me the wrong way. I told DH I would be sad and worried if she was on call and we agreed the odds were in our favor to not have her. Well, my water broke and when I went to the hospital, she was on call.... for my whole long extended birth. I guess the midwives do 24 hour shifts? I was worried and peeved at first, but once I showed that I was calm, collected, and knowledge about the process and my desires, she was very supportive. She shined more in L&D and her manner was much more engaging than I would have ever predicted based on office visits. It turned out fine in the end. I hope one of your preferred midwives is on call, but if not, don’t despair.
@stothi sorry your appointment was so stressful. I don’t know why it’s so hard for people working in the same office to communicate, but my last appointment was like that too. When I was scheduling my GD screen/28 weeks appointment, the scheduler told me I needed to fast, so I booked an 8am appt. when I confirmed it with the doctor beforehand, she said no definitely don’t fast. Have something with protein 2 hours before the test. Had I known that, there’s no way I would have scheduled the test at 8 am. And then at the appointment, the doctor and I talked about how I would be getting my tdap and rhogam shot and the nurse would be right in to do that. After the nurse drew some blood and gave me the tdap she told me I was done and could go. I asked about the rhogam shy and she looked at me like I had three heads and said “you’re rh negative?” The doctor and I literally just talked about it 10 minutes earlier! I wound up needing a second blood draw before I could get the shot and the whole thing added 15 minutes to my appointment. I was so annoyed.
@stothi @nackie That stuff is so annoying! Are we at the same practice??? Lol at 24 weeks, one MW told me she would put into CVS caremark for my 90 day Levothyroxine script, "but it might take a couple weeks to come in"... but then she obviously just didn't. <img src="https://us.v-cdn.net/5020794/uploads/editor/zj/f2yg0bfkrgj6.gif" alt=""> Luckily, I asked the other MW again at 28 weeks, and she took care of it.
@dairygirl93 Good luck with your placenta. I just found out that mine moved up, but I spent the past 9 weeks mentally preparing for the idea of a c-section due to a low lying placenta. I think it’s good to be prepared either way.
I’m very happy with my practice and where I’m giving birth. It’s a world renowned leading institution. And yet, they can still be super disfunctional in many of the ways you all are describing. They don’t contradict each other and everyone is nice, but there is a frequent lack of communication. I found out yesterday that I was supposed to have been given a bright green folder with all of the info about hospital tours and birthing classes and so much more - at 20 weeks! That was in April! I should have been signed up already and taking them already. They never gave me that folder and it only came up when I started asking my doctor questions that related to that info. H was pissed because the MFM who did my ultra sound asked me about the baby’s movement and I told her it has been rather inconsistent. She told me all about counting kicks and what to do when and went into great detail about how long the baby can survive when in distress etc. It was super helpful info - but again the regular OB has never mentioned this. It’s just scary- never having done this before - and not being totally confident that your doctors are on top of everything.
@magnolia209 this is my second pregnancy and none of my doctors have ever asked me to do kick counts. At each appointment, they ask is baby seems to be moving around in there and as long as I say yes they seem happy.
Sorry for the mixed appt @stothi. It’s frustrating when people in the same practice don’t have the same answers.
U/S done... my placenta moved too!! It’s well out of the way of my cervix now - the tech even commented that baby’s head is past the placenta now. I got to see his face in 3D too and it was so cute.
Check-up after was the usual. I did get both TDaP and Rhogam today so those are taken care of. Seems crazy that I’m up to bi-weekly appointments now!

@nackie Right - I told the MFM that I was concerned about how some days I could feel lots of movement and some days none. That’s why she told me what to do (as in - don’t ignore this, but also do the kick counting before you call us freaking out). I guess what I was trying to say is that this was a random MFM that I don’t normally see. My regular OB has never asked about the baby’s movements. The MFM was basically like - pay attention to this. The OB just doesn’t give me much advise unless I ask her something directly. I feel like it’s on me to figure out what to ask her. Although the “green folder” that I was supposed to get at 20 weeks did have lots of info in it!
Update: I failed. Two of the four numbers were high and the other two were within two points of also failing. Now I get to rearrange my whole work schedule next week to make it to a half day class where they can tell me how to count carbs and eat small, balanced meals and snacks. This is the type of thing I wish they’d let me do online.
@spottedginger Argh crap.. That sucks. It's only for a few weeks though. You can do this.

Thanks, ladies for all the support. In the end, it will be fine. I’m not thrilled for the “high risk” label and what that might mean for later pregnancy interventions and L&D, but all these things are minor inconveniences in the long run of getting to hold baby girl
@spottedginger. Oh jeez, yeah I'm sorry for the high risk classification, but I think you have a great attitude about it. it's true, it's a pain, but at least it's actually pretty manageable and not the end of the world in the grand scheme of things. In a few short months you'll be through it, and holding your sweet baby girl in your arms!!! :D #WORTHIT
@spottedginger sorry you had to wait so long to get your results and then find out you didn’t pass. I know the class will be a pain, but hopefully it will be beneficial in helping you manage it going forward.
@spottedginger sorry you got the GD diagnosis, but welcome to the club! Current membership: me and you ;-) I also had it with my daughter, let me know if you have any questions! I started a thread a couple weeks ago.
i had had my appointment today, everything looked great at the ultrasound. Estimated weight was at the 86th percentile, but they’re not concerned. Will see what it is next month at my 34 week ultrasound!
