A friend is visiting this week... for the whole week. I gently suggested a shorter trip but should have been more direct. I love her but OMG 3 adults, 2 dogs and a fetus in our NYC shoebox apartment is killing me already.
Not too busy at work this week which means I get to play catch up. Hoping we can continue to knock out small projects little by little at home after work.
Anyone else already feel like it's the end of June? No? Ok then, apparently I'm freaking out about having 13ish weeks left, NBD.
@nlc8424 You deserve a quiet day at work! My day is busy, but I'm waiting for my boss to get back from a meeting so I can go over some things with her and then go get my GD test. So, I am kind of in a holding pattern at the moment - and dreading this gross drink!
I can't believe it's almost mid June.I swing back and forth between: "Uggg..I'm so uncomfortable and I can't picture my belly getting bigger and I can't believe I still have 3 more months" and "OMG there are only 3 months and I'm totally not ready and everything is soving so quickly!".
@magnolia209 Haha I feel the same way. Half the time I want people to sign a petition to make pregnancy a 6 month affair rather than a 9 month one, then other times I panic that the nursery isn't finished and we need to get quite a few more things.
@Patience7150 Hahaha OMG that's too funny. I'll have to show that one to H.
Speaking of H and his parents. He just went to visit his mom since she just got back from a month long trip to Asia (this is normal for her). Anyway, apparently she cried telling him she wishes we were closer. I feel bad but at the same time I have no idea how to really bond with her. I often struggle to hold a conversation with her due to language barriers and then she questions everything I do. Not in a mean spirited way, I don't think, but she just doesn't understand why I would do things that way. Any suggestions on ways to bond with your Chinese MIL?!
@Patience7150 thank you!! Grateful my H has stood by me in not wanting anyone in the room besides him, but this hits on exactly why I want it that way.
@SkilledSailor does she make an effort to reach out to you? Because I feel like that's a two way street. Obviously she's not trying to be rude with the questions but culturally it doesn't come across that way. Do you have any common interests? Painting, knitting, crocheting, gardening? Asking her for advice in something she enjoys would probably mean a lot to her. I'm not sure what else to offer, that sounds hard.
@SkilledSailor sorry you are struggling with your MIL. It would definitely be hard to bond and spend time with someone who frequently travels far away for a long period of time. My guess is that with the upcoming arrival or a grand baby she feels she needs to be closer to you. It seems to me this is completely normal, even when you are close to people, when a baby is coming they start to stress you aren’t close enough. She probably needs to feel like she will be involved in the babies life and any ways you think you could incorporate her culture/traditions would make her happy. That is not saying you should, I’m just saying if there were any traditions you were/are planning to incorporate maybe share those with her in normal conversation.
Ooh!!! @SkilledSailor. I wish I had a Chinese MIL to help me cook the foods to sit the month! That seems like a great conversation starter, ask her if there are any recommendations she has for PP. Not that you necessarily plan on being strict with it, but if there are traditional things you could incorporate into your (likely more western-style) PP recovery, I bet she'd be excited to share her thoughts with you.
@SkilledSailor I also have a MIL who I have trouble communicating with. She speaks Spanish (1st) and Hebrew (2nd). She does not speak any English. She lives super far away, so we are not super “close” but there are also no issues between us. We just can’t really talk. She works at a make-up counter and one time when we were visiting, I let her give me a make over. That was scary, but fun and good for both of us. She gave me earrings once and I made sure to wear them at our rehearsal dinner. She is coming when the baby is born but thankfully not staying for very long. I plan to happily take in all of her advice (translated by H) and then not worry about any of it. Again, it’s easier for us because she lives so far away. I do plan to ask her for some recipes.
@nlc8424 Meh, sometimes she does. We do both like to cook. She taught me how to make veggie spring rolls awhile back which was nice. I could definitely ask how she makes her lo mein because it's on point.
@eerin86 Oh no! Hope you're feeling better as the time passes.
@klj0228 That's kinda what I was thinking. I told H that I had hoped his mom and I would just naturally talk more once LO is here because we'd have this thing automatically bonding us (other than H). Like maybe the three of us would go to playgrounds together? I don't know.
@businesswife So we actually talked about PP recovery last month when we saw each other. Luckily she likes the western style better but their traditions are to eat lots of fish soup and the mother and child are suppose to stay inside the home for a full month. I guess these days they'd make exceptions for doctor visits but that's it. Thank God she doesn't expect me to stick to those ones, haha!
What an amazing couple of days! I feel like my old self, even with the little bit of nausea I have had. While H obviously knows I am pregnant he is one of the few people who doesn’t treat me like I’m pregnant and can’t do anything. He even encourages me cheat the rules when he can tell I really need to. It’s been great to spend a few days with pretty much only him!
Today we went grocery shopping and as we are walking through the store he tells me he has been really craving spicy food lately (which we both like spicy food, but he is saying EVERYTHING needs to be spicy) and he told me three different times that hamburger steaks with mushroom gravy sounded good. He finally said, we have to get the stuff for hamburger steaks and gravy because I am really craving it. And we bought multiple bottles of hot sauce. Finally I said, it sounds like you are having major pregnancy cravings. His response was, I think I am!! I on the other hand have had very few if any cravings and seem to have more aversions.
@Patience7150 HAH! This is excellent. So glad I don't have this problem. I have an okay relationship with mine, but we certainly aren't all buddy buddy. She's a nurse and I have nothing against nurses, but she's so opinionated/judgmental regarding anything medical. I know from my SIL that she's against birth centers and a few other decisions we've already made. It was a very easy agreement between my fiance and I; phone calls only after the baby has arrived and all goes well. It just greatly reduces the amount of potential stress on both of us.
This week should be pretty quiet work wise with my boss out of town and training. Preparing material for a big week of travel and meetings at the end of the month, but I've got plenty of time still. I'm hoping to keep the nausea in check through the week so we can hopefully get some camping/fishing in next weekend, I've had the worst cravings for some fresh salmon Going on two full days of being 100% okay, so I'm remaining hopeful!
@tasha_ak I love the idea of not calling anyone until after the baby is born and everything is fine. I don’t want anyone at the hospital when I’m in labor so maybe we will just call everyone after the baby is here and we know everything is okay with both baby and me.
@klj0228 we didn't call anyone until the day after our first baby was born. I never told anyone my due date either though. The month was all anyone got. This time I've been extra generous and have let a few people know that my due date is "towards the end of the month."
My dog was due to have puppies on Saturday, I was excited because I dont work on Sunday or Monday and could be home for her. Wouldn't you know it, she still hasnt had them. Shes so ready to pop and I guess I'll be taking her to work with me this week so I can keep an eye on her. I hope the picture isn't enormous, I'm on mobile.
@ellbeedee Aw! She is so cute. And How crazy that you and your dog are pregnant at the same time! I’ve been wondering how similar or different pregnancy is for animals and us. And also, what type of work do you do that you can bring her? And finally, do you know what to do when she goes into labor? Do you take her to a doggy L&D? Sorry! I have so many questions!
Slight TMI- I feel like my H always knows the one day I haven't been able to poop and feel gassy/bloated and wants to get busy with me. I mean I appreciate that the man still finds me attractive throughout pregnancy, but sure wish there was a better way to accept/decline based on how my bathroom trips went for the day.
In other news, I might be developing a slight obsession with Crocs shoes. OMG they're so comfy! My pregnant feet definitely appreciate the material they're made of!
@SkilledSailor you may find things get a lot easier once you have a baby to show pictures or try to communicate about. With my mil we don’t have a language barrier but we aren’t as close as hubby would like. It got easier with DD because we had a topic that we were both interested in. Conversation is still stilted though. She’s a very nice woman but conversation rarely flows.
DD’s playground was delivered Friday in 400 pieces. So this week DH is putting it together section by section. It’s intense!!
DD also starts swim lessons up again. We started like a year ago but then missed for a while so we are starting them back up. So cute watching babies in the water.
Otherwise just work and ordering stuff for the nursery. I finally found art work to act as a centerpiece!! I totally forgot that DD has a piece from this one artist and we have one from our wedding, so I looked and found one for this baby girl, by the same artist. Changed my nursery colors but I love that she already will have a piece of artwork.
I’m back! We had a busy and fun time at Disney. I’m physically sore, but mentally so rejuvenated. I don’t put a lot of faith in activity trackers but mine says we hit 8, 7.7, 6, and 6.5 miles Thurs-Sunday. Most of that was pushing a stroller or carrying my 2.5 year old with tons of bending and lifting. It was a good time and I’m so glad we were able to take the trip as a family of three before baby sister arrives. I missed you ladies, but the internet break was also a nice reset. Trying to catch up today at work and here on TB.
@SkilledSailor plan ahead. During your drive or flight, figure out what you want to see and how to make it work with the least time in line. Use websites like touringplans.com and wdwprepschool to create your plan for the day. We got to do and see so much bc of prep work. People who just showed up without a game plan at the parks seem to the the ones caught in lines and miserable. You can take food and drinks into the parks or buy there. Also, Uber is cheap and excellent! Then you don’t have to pay to park and deal with the ferry across. When you uber to the magic kingdom, have them drop you off at the contemporary resort and it is a four minute walk. What park(s) are you heading to?
@spottedginger Oh cool! I didn't know you could Uber in. We're definitely doing Magic Kingdom. I've kind of planned for that one, and have the FastPasses scheduled in such a way that we should be walking in a circle throughout the course of the day rather than running back and forth. We have one day where we haven't gotten tickets yet but are leaning towards Animal Kingdom if I decide I have the energy that day for a park. Then we have a half day that we plan on just going to Disney Springs.
@ellbeedee good luck! I helped my cat deliver once, between night shifts, and let's just say it is an experience I am not ready to forget! Keep us posted! Can't wait for cute newborn puppy pictures!!!
I just had the juice for the glucose test. Can't believe we have to keep that in for a whole hour
@SkilledSailor yes! The “official” Uber drop off is down at ticketing and transportation (which would mean taking the boat back to the main parking area), but drop off at the contemporary puts you closer and an easy walk in. You will have so much fun! We stayed up for the fireworks on Friday and it was worth it. The show was great. Also, I definitely recommend good sneakers and socks rather than sandals, especially pregnant.
@spottedginger Even in the heat? I've been torn on the sneaker thing. My feet aren't swelling too bad yet but if I'm on them for awhile in the heat they start getting uncomfortable in close toed shoes. I can always pack them and have H carry them in his backpack though. He just loves being my pack mule.
@SkilledSailor yes, even in the heat. Otherwise (at least for me), my feet would swell around the straps and then rub and blister. Also, the extra support from sneakers kept me much more comfortable on my feet during long days. There is a lot of walking and just standing on hard surfaces that sneaks up on you. But, you might not have a problem with your sandals. Make your husband carry the sneakers just in case. It will be good practice for all the diaper bag stuff you/ he will be hauling.
@spottedginger@SkilledSailor Ooohhh Disney!!! We went in November and I really want to go back. +1 to tennis shoes, staying for fireworks and taking in water and lots of snacks! Also - you probably already know this, but if you use up your 3 Fast Passes, you can add more as you go. We avoided a lot of lines that way. Have fun!!
@spottedginger So glad you had fun! Can you request an Uber with a carseat??
Me: 32 DH: 32 BFP #1: 1/23/2012 DD: Born 9/20/2012 BFP #2: 12/30/2017 DS: Due 9/10/2018
@southernlady07 yes, in Orlando they have uber car seat and uber car seat xl which will come with one forward facing car seat off of a pre-approved list of models (you can google to see what they allow). You pay a premium for each trip, but worth it to not haul your own car seat on the plane or rent a car and drive. If you stay on property, you can use the Minnie Van service which is run through Disney but powered by the Lyft app, but it only goes to other Disney properties. It is a flat fee per trip rather than distance and surge-based.
@SkilledSailor enjoy your vacation and the wedding this weekend!!
So today has been very busy, I was on the phone for 5 hours straight with back to back conference calls. Well, I completely forgot to call and cancel the bug guy this afternoon. So when the doorbell rings at 4 I assume my H, who is not working today, would answer it. I stayed in my office, the dog was going crazy and he hollers up the stairs telling me to answer it. I tell him I’m working, still completely forgetting I even had the bug guy set for today, and he goes out to talk to the guy. He comes up to my office after he leaves and says, well you forgot to cancel him so you should have talked to him. I am working!!! You know, the job that will allow you to be a SAHD in the fall?! I said, if I am working and you are home it is your job to answer the door. Okay, really just needed to vent.
ETA: well, he made up for it by planting my butterfly bush and taking down trees and low limbs.
Everyone in the office was teasing me about my pants today... So what that I decided to wear overalls so my pants don't fall down when I'm in the field
@magnolia209 I own a dog grooming salon! So very convenient. Woke up this morning and saw she was in early labor (panting, nesting in her box, shivering) so I took her with me. I was SUPER relieved she waited until 10 minutes after we got home and delivered QUICKLY 6 tiny little pups!! 3 boys 3 girls and I cant believe she had so many! Shes a havanese poodle mix. After watching her give birth to 6 I'm very relieved I only have to deliver 1. But she did great!
@ellbeedee Awe she’s beautiful! What cute little babies! I think it’s so cool to be pregnant at the same time as your dog. My heeler went through an extra heat this year and we’re unfortunately expecting an oops litter early July.
When I worked on a dairy farm, I would pay extra special attention to cows that shared a due date with me. We have roughly the same gestation, so it always seemed extra special to me.
