PSA: E. Coli Outbreak in Romaine Lettuce

A new warning issued by Consumer Reports to avoid romaine lettuce while U.S. and Canadian health officials continue their investigation after 58 people were reported sick from E. coli infections and one death, NBC News reported.

The Food and Drug Administration and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have issued warnings about the outbreak. 

The outbreak spread across 13 states; California, Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Vermont, and Washington. The Public Health Agency of Canada reported on 41 illnesses, NBC News reported.

I have a huge bag of romaine at home. I live in Ohio. I wish they would say what brand or specifics. Id hate to eat it and get sick but i also hate wasting good food!!

Let me say that ive already eaten some as weve had it for about a week. So my guess is its ok but I dont think I want to chance it.

MH was shaking his finger at me last night when I was finally hungry for the first time in weeks and then ate a plate full of lasagna and ignored the ceasar salad except to pick off a couple of croutons. I can't wait to tell him this and pretend like it must have been some kind of pregnant woman superpower (rather than the fact that lasagna > salad)

Ugh. I hate finding out this stuff AFTER I have consumed several salads the last couple of days. I always wash my produce. Buuuuutttt, now I'm paranoid.

@beanship hahahahahaha, love it. Lasagna is definitely way better than salad.

Ate lettuce on a taco today... hope it was iceberg!

I was joking with someone the other day that I should avoid hummus and lettuce over lunch meats because the recalls are always with those! ug.

@lindsayleigh1989 my SIL is also pregnant and just got diagnosed with GD. She feels royally screwed because she has to avoid carbs, sweets, and now salad haha

Also hate that they don’t say where in Canada the reports are coming from but name a bunch of states. Canada is huge! I don’t wanna throw out my romaine for no reason!!

This gives me major anxiety, honestly.   I was hospitalized for days with confirmed e coli while pregnant with #2.    Unmedicated labor and delivery is less painful (i've done that twice).

Just a thought. I saw on another board that they had a dedicated thread to food recalls. Like anytime one of them heard about it they could post it for everyone. Plus they had the link to the CDC recalls website. Would we want to consider doing something like that?

@TheQuietThings I knew someone on here said they had it bad during pregnancy but couldnt remember who. Just awful.

@moguippy I remember that on my last BMB. I think it's a good idea so we can keep it all in one place and people can choose to read or ignore.
