Naming Peter's brother

I'm back again.

We already have a Peter Joseph (that we sometimes call Pete), and his little brother is due on Christmas Eve.

***FYI: Edwin is a family name. Asher (in my opinion) is not a family name, but my husband loves it and thinks it could be a way to incorporate my name (which is Ashley). If you're wondering if my husband's name is in there, it's Joseph, which is Peter's middle name.

Thoughts?

Philip Edwin

Edwin Jude

Edwin Asher

Cormac Edwin

Jude Edwin

Jude Asher

Noam Edwin (Noam is one I asked about last time)

Re: Naming Peter's brother

  • I love Edwin.

Honestly, I think you should just go balls to the wall and use Edwin Ashley. I think it's got old school charm, sounds dignified and matches the naming convention of his older brother.
    YES!

  • I want to love Edwin (major family name for me), but I worry about "special ed" and the nn Eddie, which I don't like. I love Philip, and also really like Jude. So my favorite is Philip Edwin. Only caveat - are you thinking of more children? Because it feels awkward IMO to have a third kid when the first two have the same letter - you have to decide whether one would feel "left out" or if you're crossing into Duggar territory
  • I like Edwin Jude.  Maybe use nn Teddy.

I actually think my husband would like to do that, but I'm the one that's hesitant. I'm even a little bit hesitant about Asher.

This second one is our last planned one. I'm not normally into doing any kind of theme, and I'm not deliberately wanting to do a P name, but we do like Phillip.

If it had a harder P sound like Paul, I don't think I would like it as much.

If we have a third, I think that we would deliberately try to avoid another P name.  I do think it would cross over from coincidental to matchy if we did it a third time.

Hmmm, I may run that by my husband as a potential nickname.  Someone on another board mention that, long ago, Win was sometimes used as a nickname for Edwin.

  • I'm for Edwin Ashley too. Edwin because I dig the nn Eddie and if you're using your names as middle names, there's nothing wrong with using Ashley. It's historically a male name, with only a brief period of use for girls in the 80s/90s and it's completely fallen off since.

Ignore your experiences with Ashley as a name in your youth, your son might never meet a little girl named Ashley haha

I'm completely fine with Ashley on a boy, and I actually encourage other people to use it on other baby name sites when they ask about it.

I think my issue isn't that it's Ashley on a boy in our case, it's just that my name is Ashley and I don't love it. Lol.

Like I don't like it on me, so it's hard for me to want to give it to a child, if that makes sense.  I'm not sure what my hangup is.

    Completely agree!!!
  • I am with you that I would only use Edwin as a mn. I do love family connections. With Peter being such a strong sounding name, I just think Edwin sounds especially weak next to it. I would go with another strong, classic  name. My favorite from your list is definitely Philip Edwin. I also like (with brother Peter):

Robert -- my fav. Strong, classic, similar sounds as Peter but distinctive
    Andrew
    Brian
    Christopher
    Matthew
Nathaniel (nn Nate-- a nice one with brother Pete)
  • Peter and Cormac.  That's pretty prefect. Neither middle name option has great flow with it, imo, so I would just pick the one with more significance for you (I assume Edwin.)

Jude Edwin would be my second choice.

    Or Ned.
