Questions 8/13

Re: Questions 8/13

  • Does anyone else have a child with food allergies, and are now taking steps to attempt to avoid food allergies in this baby?  I an pretty sure this was discussed in the STM thread.  I had made an appointment with my son's allergist to get his opinion and help, and unfortunately I need to reschedule it and don't know when I can see him otherwise.

@holly321, most doctors recommend exposing babies to allergens early so their bodies recognize it as normal and not a threat.  This is especially true in the womb as well.

ETA: my first had a severe intolerance for dairy, so for this baby I am stocking up in advance on non-dairy foods.  It tends to run in families.

  • @holly321 DS is allergic to eggs and tree nuts. I'm not doing anything to avoid eggs. I am eating less PB than with DS. I had it every morning for breakfast with DS, so this time around I'm trying to limit it to weekly.

  • I have my first  ultrasound at 4 today. Being a FTM I have no idea what to exspect.  I've heard you want to come with a full bladder is this true ladies? I am  6w3d  today do you think they will do a vaginal ultrasound ?
  • @MrsFox1315 I think it depends on facility on the bladder thing. Mine always wants an empty bladder. My guess is they will try abdominal at 6.3 but don't be surprised if they end up with a transvaginal to see things well.

  • @kindbytealikat thanks so much! I'll prolly come with a full bladder I can always empty it.
  • @MrsFox1315 If I remember correctly, they wanted a full bladder for my anatomy scan, not the dating one. This time they'll just want to see the sac and measure. If you're 6 weeks or further, they'll look for a heart beat.  At the anatomy they take a ton of pics and measure the head, limbs, etc. they need a lot of different views for the anatomy so I think the full bladder helps. Hope this help!

  • I asked this in the appointments thread but thought it'd also be relevant here... what are questions you'd ask a new OB? I'm a STM, but this is a completely different practice than the one I delivered DD with.

Hrm, I asked quite a bit of questions with mine.  It's good to cobble together a rough idea of a birth plan before seeing the OB.  You can then ask questions pertinent to the type of birth you want.  Things like if they do episiotomies automatically, how open are they to non-traditional methods such as letting you get into whatever position you want.  Things like that.

I second this. I moved to a new practice for my second but it was entirely because I was going for a VBAC so all of my questions revolved around that.
I would also ask how the practice does delivery, on call doc? Are you assigned an OB or will you cycle through all the ones in the practice? These obviously assume a large practice.

    Pregnancy Ticker
  • I posted this in my ticker change but also posting here:
does anyone have ANY pregnancy safe ways to get some energy? I know that coffee in moderation is okay but the in moderation amount is just not enough to get me through the days. I was exhausted my entire pregnancy with DS so I'm anticipating the same extreme tiredness this time around. However, this time I now have a crazy busy toddler and two jobs. I'm finding it so hard to stay sane during the day.. then add on my crazy irritability (thanks hormones) and I'm just a real winner at work. I'll try anything!
  • @toniherdt any type of exercise should help with the exhaustion. I have also noticed that midday naps make my tiredness worse some days.

  • @toniherdt Naps do help me, but they have to be short so I don't wind up more sleepy - I usually try to set an alarm for 20 minutes.

  • Short (10 min) meditations on the headspace app, have really helped me to focus when I'm tired. They have a productivity pack that's been a lifesaver. I combine it with a little 5-10 min walk and I'm reinvigorated and most people at work don't even notice I've been gone.

    That said, I miss coffee.
  • @holly321 We had DS tested (skin test) when he was 18 months for dairy (hive reaction from skin contact is what led to the appointment). They tested for egg and peanut as well. Dairy came back positive and egg and peanut as a sensitization (so basically TBD when he's old enough for blood test). Blood test one year later confirmed egg and peanut allergy, but he had grown out of the dairy (small victory!). I ate peanut butter and cereal w/milk EVERY DAY when pregnant with him. So I did not see a correlation with eating these foods when pregnant and minimizing the risk of allergies. This was also confirmed by our allergist. He says direct and early exposure to babies may be the way to go so these proteins are not later recognized as harmful and foreign. Ultimately, he says on the whole, they do not really know why food allergies are on the rise.
I am curious what your allergist will say when you're able to get an appointment though.

  • Does anyone have a good app for tracking healthy habits?

I think it might help my motivation just to be able to check off things like "I remembered my prenatal" "I hit 10000 steps." "I exercised today." and track stuff like how many glasses of water I had and how many servings of fruit/veggies.

  • I need some good ideas for high protein/low carb snacks. Any ideas? Bonus if they're peanut free for my peanut free classroom (while I'm at school). I'm hypoglycemic and would really like to sugar crashes this early.

  • @kindbytealikat I'm always so surprised when people suggest hummus because I've tried to find one that has a decent amount of protein and it's usually only like 2g. I aim for at least 6g to count as a protein.
