@ryannenikole We started with the bucket seat, then switched to a convertible around 7 months when he got too tall for the bucket. I LOVE the convertible seat, but the bucket is nice for the first few months when you can just grab them out of the car to run an errand and pop them back in. We saved the infant seat for kiddo number 2, which we will use this time around.
This is what we did, too. We'll reuse the bucket for this baby, and DD will stay in the convertible. She's been in it since she was 6 months old.
We made it to 11 months in the infant car seat before we outgrew the height limit. I highly recommend it, nothing beats keeping a sleeping baby sleeping.
My friend's son is 15 months and still in the infant seat! I think he's small for his age though. We registered for a travel system with a stroller, infant seat and 2 additional bases.

@caeilievalor - i really like the Graco 4-in-1 Blossom (or w/e it's called) but it seems that you have to take the seats off to fold the legs for storage. I also liked some others, but decided that they were too expensive since we need 2...We're planning on keeping them in the office off the kitchen when not in use, so folding is important to us. When DH and i actually went to BuyBuyBaby, we liked the Chicco 4-in-1 Total Clean ones. Seemed like a good compromise between features we want and price...
@caeilievalor@missblaze Yes! i really like that one, but did read that it takes up a lot of room. The Chicco one i mentioned also turns into a booster seat like the Graco, so it really came down to the 2 of them to choose from.
@ryannenikole I'm going straight to the convertible car seat this time around. With DS, we had to get a new car seat around 7 months. So it was $200 for the infant seat, then almost $300 for the convertible seat. Not gonna make that mistake again. I'm buying the same one we have for DS. Graco 4ever All in One Car Seat. It works for infants 4lbs and up. So it would work for a newborn.
DD was in her infant car seat until 18 months (we JUST switched her). We went way longer than most, but that's because DD is pretty tiny (only 20 pounds at 18 months old) and was still well within the height/weight limit. I loved the bucket seat for the same reason as many PP's. It's really nice for when they fall asleep in the car, or for restaurants. We have the Britax.
I would also recommend a bucket seat for a newborn. DD was in her's until 11 months. It was so convenient to be able to keep her sleeping when out and about in the beginning. Our Britax doesn't expire for another 5 years or so, so we'll definitely get our money's worth. Using again for this LO and possibly another after that.
We had a Graco 4-in-1 high chair which worked well for DD. This time around though, I'll be splurging and getting a Tripp Trapp. I love that it's an actual piece of furniture and that it will be able to be used well in to childhood.

Have you looked at the hook on high chairs that attach to your table? I love those because baby can sit with the rest of the family at meal times. Most hold up to 37#s or a 3 year old, and are super easy if you want to take with you to friends, grandparents, or restaurants.
Convertible carseat vs the "pumpkin seat". I like the idea of one seat that will grow with baby rather than upgrading repeatedly. We registered for a convertible, but I question whether or not it's actually practical. I do plan on baby wearing a lot, if that makes a difference. What do you all think?
I didn't get an infant seat until my 3rd, i just started with backward facing convertibles, let me tell you the infant seat changed my world! So so worth it. If you have several cars you can use 1 with 2 bases, and the convertibles are more difficult to install, so you will want 1 per car with those.
Car seats: I really liked having the bucket seat and I'm sure I'll appreciate it this time too. Being able to get baby all buckled in and snug inside, then just click into the car, made me more comfortable while learning the right way to buckle. You can also put a bucket seat into any car, even without a base, just use the seat belt (pull all the way out, then feed back in to lock it). For the first 10 months that's what we did in DH's silly tiny car - he actually had to remove the passenger seat just to get the bucket seat into the back.
High chairs: We have one that straps on to a kitchen chair (older Fisher Price Space Saver I think?). It was a BST buy but I might look for another this time. It was convenient to have on a chair but both the fabric pad and the cracks in the plastic collect crud.
Merlin’s Magic Sleep Suit - if you plan to swaddle your baby (which I’d recommend for MOST babies), this sleep suit is an awesome transition out of the swaddle. There are two sizes to get you through the 3-9month stage. My older son loved his so much he literally still sleeps with it as his lovey.
White noise machine - I’m not wedded to a specific brand, but both my boys love them
Art Smocks - We use these instead of “cute” bibs once we start solid foods. I did BLW with both my kids and it is messy, this really helps keep clothes clean, and they’re easy to wash.
Prefolds - like @missblaze and @bainidhedub we use them as spit-up rags, and they’re the best
Jolly Jumper Car Seat Cover - this is my third winter baby (and I live somewhere it gets cold), if you do too I’d recommend a “shower cap” style car seat cover, like this one. Beause it doesn’t get between baby and the seat it doesn’t impact the seat safety and it keeps littles warm really well.
Plastic, Booster-seat Style High Chair - Anything with fabric gets super nasty, so I like all plastic that can wipe clean easily. The fact that this doesn’t recline is no concern to me as I don’t start solids until my child can sit unassisted. Lots of people like the IKEA high chair, and I really hate that one because the tray is super hard to get off, and thus makes cleaning difficult. I don’t have this exact fisher price one, just something similar that was a hand-me-down and it’s great.
Kimono style baby shirts - they come in short/long sleeve and they’re great before you get confident dressing their floppy heads and before the umbilical cord falls off. This is the exception to my “don’t register for clothes” rule.
A diaper bag you love - I have a few that I love, but my current favorite is the Lily Jade, it’s gorgeous, looks like a purse and can easily convert to a backpack too! Plus it has a removable, washable insert.
Pop-up Play Yard - I don’t know how much I would have used this as a FTM, but as a STM? I got a lot of use out of it, especially at the park when the baby was in the just laying there stage so i could run after the toddler. It’s super light and folds up small.

I also have TONS of opinions on things to stock up on for post-partum (and I bet I'm not the only one!), would there be interest in starting a separate thread for that? AKA the embarrassing stuff you need but wouldn’t want to put on your registry lol
Is there interest in a couple AMA style threads over the next few weeks dedicated to individual items (e.g. carseats, strollers, wraps, cloth diapers, diaper bags, etc....whatever the “big” items are), and STM’s can say what they have and offer to answer brand specific questions if anyone has them?
This thread seems super helpful, should we try to get it pinned?
@auntieraindrop I added 1-2 decor items to my registry, just so people had a sense of what the nursery was going to look like and I could hopefully head off items that didn’t work at the pass. It mostly worked, and the few items I did get that clashed I just returned.

I just found the best baby clothing website - www.primary.com . It's motto is "no logos, no slogans, no sequins" and they're all cotton, which is exactly what i wanted! I was getting really discouraged looking at girl's clothing online and in stores. The boy's clothing i can at least avoid the sports/animal stuff and find normal clothing, but the girl's clothing was really starting to make me sad today. So i googled "simple baby clothes with no words or characters" and the first result was Primary, and now i'm so happy and excited for baby clothes! The little girl dresses are sooo cute! Yay! I was just so excited i had to share it I'm actually in danger now of buying way too many baby clothes!! haha So I'm seeing other people mentioning they don't register for baby clothes, and i was just planning on returning/donating all the baby clothes i get from people, but maybe i should mention how much i like the clothes on the Primary website and see if they get the hint?
So glad you found Primary @gilsam1- and sorry I didn't mention it. I have a few dresses for DD from there and the quality is really good! Sign up for their mailing list. They were discontinuing a dress a week or so ago and I got it for under $5!!!

Love/loved - Fisher price 4 in 1 bath tub. Used for 9 monrhs - ergo 360. Used for for 14 months - boppy..while the boppy was useless when DD was an infant, I loved it from months 3-12. - Stokke Trip Trap high chair. Still using it and DD is 2. The chair grows with the kid. I can see us getting a second. The high price tag is completely offset by the usefulness of this chair. - Joseph Joseph dish tub with drain. For soaking bottles, binkies, pumping supplies, toddler cups, etc. Still using it. -board books (love me some Sandra Boynton) -pumping bra. Used 8 months - stroller with rear facing capabity. Still using (no longer rear facing) - car back seat mirror. Used 2 years -travel stroller. Still using
Could have done without... -mammaroo. used 2 months - basinet portion of our stroller. Never ysed -jogging stroller. used twice - nursing cover (just use a swaddle or scarf) used 2 months

@katieel all the threads if it means advice for FTM. I went to buybuybaby today and lasted 20 minutes before DH was like, "let's get you out of here. You look overwhelmed". Would love specific threads, particularly a stroller revival thread, all about carseats, sleep essentials, etc.
I don't know why I didn't think of this before, but someone mentioning nursing pillows that are better than the boppy made me remember. I used the boppy until about 4 months while we got the hang of nursing, then my DH got me one of these nursing arm pillows for Mother's Day and I never looked back. I love this thing!!!! It's small, and fantastic for traveling. Plus, as a very petite lady the boppy was really bulky for me. I've used this pillow on planes, trains, boats, and in automobiles (not while moving of course). For $18 it was one of the best things I bought and will be using it again this go around! You can find them on Etsy in lots of super cute patterns, mine has baby dragons on it.

I know a lot of people have said that a Rock n Play is a must have. I went to Babies R Us this weekend and saw some Pack n Play's that had the bassinet in the top, as well as a removable vibrating chair. Just wondering if anyone had this instead of a separate Rock n Play and if it serves the same purpose.
@whitta1218 I had a very simple pack n' play - not one with a "Cuddle Cove" or changing station on top. The bassinet is actually barely shown in that picture because it's under the Cuddle Cove and changing station*. We initially used the Rock n' Play and then transitioned to the PNP bassinet, but I've known a number of mommies that went straight to the bassinet with no problem. All babies are different
*ETA: Just want to make sure you know which part is the bassinet, because I was initially confused when I was pregnant with DD. (I circled it in the picture above. Please excuse the awful Paint modification lol)

Ok, So I'm way behind on this post, I kept meaning to come back and put in my two cents.
@beans17 Sound machine: DS has one but hasn't ever relied on it as a means to sleep, now he can sleep with or without it, I like it because occasionally the baby monitor will lose connections, darn size of the house and wifi always seem to mess it up when I'm doing updates to my phone, anyway it makes me feel better that I can hear it, so I'm not worried that he's crying but I don't know because the monitor isn't picking it up. Oh but also, we used an app on our phones that would play white noise so he would calm the f down as a baby if we were out and about, or if we were in the car, in traffic and he would lose it, I'd just turn on the bluetooth and play the ish out of that.
I'm amazed at how many parents I see at daycare drop off who are taking their kids out of their car with a poofy coat on. We live in TN. Its not THAT cold. DH would get irritated at me because I would not allow coats to be worn in the car for DS because "his 13 year old was fine and he wore a coat in his carseat all the time." My response is always "I don't care what you and your ex-wife did back then, and the fact that you didn't care about his safety, this is what we're doing now." Anyway... I have a milksnob cover that we used in the winter and the summer and year round. It's super breathable, has a hole up in the top for air to come in and out, and DS was always a nice cozy temp in there. When we were in the car I'd pull it up so I could see him and I always had a blanket, whether a muslin blanket or a fleece blanket with us to use in the carseat while walking around. But again, we're in TN, so while it's a bit chilly, it's not New England cold.

We used the infant seat until he was 1 year and then picked up another convertible. If we didn't already have an infant carseat I would be buying another convertible this time instead of buying an infant carseat. One less thing to buy, and those things aren't cheap. We started using the sit-up part of the stroller when DS was about 5-6 months, I think, and never looked back. I have a friend who exclusively wore her daughter and only used a convertible carseat from the beginning and she said that she's never had a poor nap to crib transfer the entire time. Def can't say that about DS. He wakes up within minutes of the car being stopped, even in traffic, which already blows.
@caseyw8784 we didn't have a shower with family to give gifts until DS was 6 weeks, but everyone bought him current sized clothing. So this time I'm stocking up on current season clothes, so about 6 month-ish so I can get it on clearance. I didn't own a single newborn item with DS because the dr was so sure he would be over 10 pounds, which he would have been had he been born at 40 weeks, I was induced at 38+4. We ended up picking up 2 sleepers and a pack of white onesies in newborn sizes which he wore for maybe 2 weeks... max.
@supercoolstephy We LOVED the Baby Einstein Sea Dreams Soother! Unfortunately I had borrowed from my SIL so I'm going to have to purchase it this go-round. That's a great price on Amazon! I may have to buy today
+1 to the baby Merlin magic sleep suit. I never swaddled, the girls slept in the rock and plays until 4-5 months and this made the transition to the crib effortless. It seriously is a life saver and worth every penny.

Another question (& this may be a dumb one) but I've been looking at some registry checklists on Pinterest and places just to get an idea of what all I need to register for. Most of them just say bottles, but one said Slow - Fast flow nipples. Considering I'm clueless, can someone explain which ones I need and when I will need them?
@whitta1218 In general, newborns use a slower flow nipple and then progress to faster flow as they grow, get used to feeding, and require more milk. All babies are different though, and progress at different rates. I know some moms that never used different flow nipples. However, in my experience, starting with a slow flow nipple encourages baby to suck and prevents too much milk from entering baby's mouth and causing coughing/choking.
ETA: Most manufacturers will give you guidelines re: when to transition to the next nipple.
@whitta1218 my son was breastfed and his pediatrician said it wasn't necessary to change nipple sizes for his bottles because momma's nipple size doesn't change. So we never changed from size 1 and he was fine. I think the different sizes are more geared for formula fed babies
@sbishop426 We nursed as well and my pedi said the same, but I found that at a certain point (probably around 6 months) it was taking her much longer to get through a bottle while I was at work and she was becoming increasingly frustrated. Once we switched to medium flow, it was so much better. I think it's great to have the option if needs change.
Re: the bottle nipple flow, we used the slow flow ones, but like @missblaze said, she started taking longer to finish so we switched. She hated the faster flow though, so for us it was a waste of money- we used them maybe 3 times before we went back to the slow flow. Babies are weird, guys.

It's super sturdy. However it takes up a lot of room and we really didn't use it beyond the main highchair.

We have the Tripp Trapp and Keekaroo at work for feeding therapy! I love them!

@whitta1218 In general, newborns use a slower flow nipple and then progress to faster flow as they grow, get used to feeding, and require more milk. All babies are different though, and progress at different rates. I know some moms that never used different flow nipples. However, in my experience, starting with a slow flow nipple encourages baby to suck and prevents too much milk from entering baby's mouth and causing coughing/choking.
ETA: Most manufacturers will give you guidelines re: when to transition to the next nipple.
