Pregnant after IF

Tubal Removal During C-Section

Ladies - what a week! I'm currently scheduled for a c-section on Tuesday due to Baby B being breech. Yesterday, at my appointment, I was asked if I wanted to have my tubes removed during the c-section and was TOTALLY caught off guard (probably b/c I was still in shock that I've gone from vaginal --> induction --> c-section in a week). Anyways, what I've learned is that this procedure will only prevent me from getting pregnant naturally but IF we wanted to have another child, which is currently not in our plans but plans change, IVF is still an option. I personally do not WANT to get pregnant naturally given our egg quality and genetic test results from our first round of IVF - the chances of loss are just too high and I can't go through that again. There is an added positive of cancer risk being reduced as well.

Have any of you been offered/considered this or know someone who did?

I don't know what I would think if I was asked that. I guess given your situation (IVF) that you really don't need them, just surprised they are asking. I know I'll likely have an ovary removed if I have a c-section but that's only because of the Endo. Such a personal decision - I guess if you don't want to risk a natural pregnancy and you are sure of it, this is one way to not have to have another surgery down the road. Saves you some pain if you are certain it's right for you and your DH!

  • Wow that's pretty crazy for them to ask! I know that if we have another I am going to ask the dr to take out my tubes while they are in there. I have to have a c-section anyway. But it is a little surprising that they would ask you first. However if that option saves you a lot of heartache then I say go for it!

  • I have 3 friends that did this, recovery was a few days longer but then it was all done. I can ask them any questions you might have! They all had the same mindset of, already in there, might as well get it all over with :) They knew they were done having kids and reducing chances of cancer was an added bonus.
  • Thanks, ladies! It's been a whirlwind of a week to say the least. @PolythenePam, good to hear from you!! I think my main questions were around recovery so if it's just a couple more days then it likely makes sense. Knowing if we change our mind and DO decide to have another child, IVF still being an option was what made me even consider this. Crazy how the human body works. Or crazy what I've forgotten from biology/health class at least!

  • Yea if I see them I'll ask overall recovery, I know my one friend was in the hospital about 5 days total (I think!) but this was her third baby so she said it was a vacation just having the baby :) keep us posted!
