Re: painting while pregnant

  • I painted DD's room and DS' nursery while pregnant with him. I had the full consent of my doctor. I was told to open the windows and use a low VOC paint (which most are these days).

We painted DS's room without a mask before I even realized it was a big deal.  It wasn't until weeks later I realized it could be harmful.  That said, we are painting the new nursery this weekend and I probably won't wear a mask again.  We will open the windows and use low VOC paint like @kissthesky32 mentioned.
  • My ob office was more concerned that I shouldn't be on a ladder, due to shifting center of gravity, rather than being concerned that I was going to be around paint.

Yes. I got Harmony paint from Sherwin Williams when I was last pregnant. It's low or no voc or something. Dr said it was fine and the helpful people at SW were helpful as well in helping me choose. I'll be painting this time around too.

Doctor said we could but I am fine with the color in the room, it's a neutral light green.
  • I gave a real answer but really wanted to choose "No because other misc reason." That reason being I am pregnant and don't wanna.
That's really funny because initially I was going to put "No, because I'm lazy." instead. I thought that was a little blunt though and changed my mind.  ;)
  • I painted my son's room while pregnant with him. I tried wearing a mask but it drove me crazy so I took it off.
  • Yes, just used low VOC paints and proper ventilation.
When im doing art related finishing work that involve fumes, I do wear a respirator and other clothing that I change out of.

We haven't talked about it, but I'm sure we'll paint the nursery. I like having color on the walls and right now that room is just standard beige. I think DH will probably get friends or family to help him with it rather than me.

  • No, because I hate painting and it's a good excuse to avoid it haha

  • I painted DD2's nursery with low VOC paint and for the windows open. I also paint (for fun) with oil paint, enamel paint and others and I will usually just do that right outside to avoid fumes.
  • We are getting ready to move and I painted 2 rooms before realizing I was pregnant. Once I did know I started on a 3rd room and didn't think much of it until the smell made me want to hurl... from then on I wore a mask and recruited my dad to help (DH is away for training until we move!).

I find threads like this interesting to find out what is actually recommeded versus what is socially promoted/misleading info on what to not do while pregnant. Personally, I plan to paint the nursery. Doc said it was fine with ventilation.

However, I had a co-worker use her pregnancy to excuse her from everything. Some made sense, but once she claimed she couldn't carry a box that was less than 10lbs because she was 3 months pregnant. She also decided she wanted to paint her office and bought everything, but then said that since she was pregnant, she couldn't do it. Rather than waiting until after pregnancy, she whined and complained until a few co-workers did it for her. I get wanting to be cautious, but shouldn't inconvenience others.

Then again, she also said she could not walk a mile for our work fundraiser because her doctor told her not to do any new exercise during pregnancy and that walking was even discouraged (while she guzzled a 20oz frappucino).  She was definitely not active before but wasn't high risk, so I am pretty sure slow walking a mile was not going to do any harm...
  • We are buying a house hopefully any time in the next month . We will have at least the baby room to paint and anything up to basic renovations to get done before November

    Brilliant Overlap timing .

Shouldn't be issue just be smart about chemicals . And lifting
  • I was out staining wood on the back porch this past weekend... Thought it probably wasn't the best thing ever but wouldn't kill me and it needed to be done..

  • I probably won't end up painting, even though I'd love to. My doctor said that it's fine as long as the room is well ventilated, etc. But, it makes DH nervous so I probably won't just for his peace of mind. We've been working to redo our office at home for a few weeks and he wouldn't let me help with painting that. I love to paint, so it's kind of a bummer, but if it keeps him from being overly anxious, I'm fine with it.
