@natleilynn we might be. I mean things are going to get dirty when you share you space with other people (i.e. spouses and children) and pets. It's going to happen. It's completely unrealistic to expect otherwise. But what do we know. We're dirty.
Me: 29 DH: 32 Married 9/27/2014 TTC Since 1/1/2017 BFP: 2/6/2017 Due Date: 10/13/17
I have been working on my stash since some time not long after we started TTC. I started with a foundation of prefolds and covers, plus fitteds and wool for overnight, and supplemented with a stash of AIOs for caregivers/out-and-about/quick changes etc.
I am here to tell you, depending on what brands you purchase, or if you buy all new vs. preloved, you may NOT save much $$ over disposables, if at all. But you can DEFINITELY save a tonne over disposables if that is a prime motivator for you to do cloth. It's all in how you plan your stash. But anyway, some reasons I - personally - am super-excited to CD... (!!!)
1. I can't bear the thought of literally throwing all that money in the garbage.
2. I am still hoping we will have more than one, so the savings in our case would definitley factor in more over multiple kids.
3. Resale value means you can end up getting a good amount of that $$ back down the road, too!
4. Subsequent kids will be in the smaller size while the older kid is in OS, so you don't really need a double stash for multiple kids. Besides, you really want to wash every 2-3 days tops, but with two in fluff, you'll have a full wash load on your hands that much quicker too. The only reason you really might want more diapers with two in fluff is maybe reducing wear and tear. And bc fun!
5. One stupid-simple andplus affordable way to CD is just use nb disposibles (which ppl will likely gift you anyway/take from hospital) and switch to OS AIOs once baby's big enough. Even 24-30 super-high end AIOs like Smartbottoms or Best Bottoms new heavy wetters or blueberry simplex would run about 30x$30=$900. Totsbots are amazing and average $24.99-26.99 30x $25=$750. Grovia ONEs are $22.99, rumparooz are in a similar range maybe closer to the totsbots, sweetpeas are maybe $21.99. Lots of ppl love bumgenius freetimes 30x $20=$600, and lalabye are at the same price point. Plus you can get stuff on sale beyond that if you start watching. Sure, you may want a few extra accessories, wetbags/pail liners, maybe an extra wool cover for nighttine and/or actual ON fitteds, cloth wipes can be made out of gifted recieving blankets for nothing... okay.
Now compare that to the cost of disposibles: https://www.diaperplanner.com/index.php
There's no comparison. Provided you don't get, "the bug," which you may bc they are just so fun, and lots of different fluff has it's pros and cons or prefferred applications. But at any rate. There's one sample approach where you can totally save a tonne of $$. Even with one kid.
6. Some of us/Hs are probably just going to have to get, "over it," at some point anyway, imho. Babies are gross. That's a fact. They pee and poop and spitup and drool or some combination thereof like - nonstop. On their clothes, on your clothes, on the bedding, on everything. So I just figure the sooner everybody gets over the whole "touching/washing poop"- thing, the easier this whole "becoming a parent"- thing, is going to be... ❤❤❤
So anyway, I could go on, but I'll stop here for now. I just sorta saw the thread leaning pretty sposie-heavy and thought I might jump in to play devil's CD advocate for a moment... ;) carry on...
I did cloth with both kiddos and will do again with this one. I'm not opposed to doing a combination of sposies and cloth but I really love cloth diapers and we do so much laundry as is with 2 boys that really adding another couple loads a week won't make a huge difference. also, I think cloth diapers cuts down of poopy diaper smells in the trash can as mostly all the pooop is washed away. The only thing I see being an issue this time is finding a daycare provider that will do cloth diapers. We are leaning towards a part time nanny for the early months so hopefully it won't be an issue.
@BusinessWife your post was so informative I really appreciate the feedback! I had not even considered the fact that cd can be used for multiple children, which would really save money in the long run, as well as resale. Hmm more things to consider.

I say disposable because as of now that's the plan. Now when my DH was a baby he was allergic to the disposable diapers therefore he had to use cloth diapers. Granted diapers have came a long way in the last 25 years but I'm doing disposibale unless LO has an allergic reaction
