Pregnant after IF

must eat every couple of hours but most food seems awful. Suggestions welcomed.

Hi. Let me just say I'm happy to be pregnant but am really not liking the m/s.  I'm  7w 1d. I was wondering if anyone had any advice for me. I have to eat every couple of hours or else I feel awful, nauseous and weak. I even have to eat at night when I wake up to go to the bathroom, which is every couple of hours. What makes it worse is that I can't stand the thought of most food. Every day, it varies what sounds edible to me. One day may be bread and cheese, the next may be cheese and crackers, the next granola cereal. This is miserable and exhausting trying to figure out what I can eat and then do so every couple of hours.  I started crying last night, because I couldn't think of a single thing to eat but felt sick.  DH came up with a pb&j that helped. Today, it's been boiled eggs.

Re: must eat every couple of hours but most food seems awful. Suggestions welcomed.

  • I feel your pain. I'm almost 17 weeks and just starting to get my appetite back (though still no chicken, eggs or bananas sadly). My doc suggested protein shakes and I compromised with chocolate milk bc the shakes just seems too thick. Just eat what you can- I've been living on pb&j and cheese sticks plus avocados and grilled cheese. Luckily most veggies have been okay. Try not to worry about what is next and have some high protein snacks on hand- like nuts. You'll get thru this :)

  • @byrneme thanks.  I appreciate the suggestion.  I used to love food and think about what I wanted to cook most of the day.  However, now, I can't stand to see commercials of food or hear anyone talk about it.  The cheese sticks may be something we keep on hand along with the nuts.

  • It is tough when nothing sounds good. I've been having Carnation breakfast shakes, the extra protein kind, daily to help with my calorie intake. I've only found it in chocolate, and they're pretty tasty and not too high in sugar.

  • Shakes (protein, smoothies) did not work for me. They came right back up again. I was nibbling on almonds for a few weeks until the thought of them made me feel ill. Anything sugary made my MS worse (I'm guessing blood sugar spikes). Dry flavourless unsalted crackers were the only think that I never went off (possibly because they tasted of nothing).
Every pregnancy is different and every day can be different. Just take it as it comes.

Remember this shall pass. You will feel like a human again. You will love food again.

I'm 19 weeks today and while my "morning" sickness has been gone since week 12 I've only just started really being excited and really enjoying food again in the last few days.

  • Apples were my to go to food. I never got sick of those, but it had to be a special brand.
Shakes for people who can't eat with all nutrition helped too, but that was when I passed 3 months. I literally lived on apples and IV my first trimester.
After 3 months I could eat raw veggies, mac&cheese and pancakes.
Never anything warmed up unless it was tea.

I too couldnt eat chicken, eggs and bananas once I got my appetite back @byrneme there was something not right with those foods

  • Have you considered asking your OB about anti-nausea meds? Diclegis gave me some relief, and it is very safe for baby (although it can be $$$ depending on your insurance coverage). It helped me get over some (not all!) of my food aversions and made it so that I could eat enough to not feel quite so constantly weak during first tri. My nausea has been bad enough that I'm still on it at 28 weeks, but I know many people who found relief using it just during first tri. I hope you feel better soon!

  • @omarismyhomeboy I have stocked up on crackers and then hit several days where the thought of crackers made me gag. I'm hoping to get back to eating them, not sure what I'll do with them otherwise.

@kdanjou  ginger ale sometimes seems appetizing. It also helps. I used to drink lemonade, but the that started burning my stomach.

I'm debating about taking zofran.  My RE said she wold prescribe it if I asked.  I just worry about it causing birth defects.  I know studies are mixed as far as that, but I don't know.

  • @Kp214 There is absolutely nothing wrong with taking a medication that helps you feel better. Sure, baby will take all the nutrients s/he needs from you anyway, but you kinda still need them too. I hope that continuing to take the medication helps and you're able to eat, and eat healthily!

  • I ended up taking medication too @kp214. After being in the hospital for the third time to get IV the doctor had a good chat with me as I was worried to take medication so I tried not to take any.
The doctor told me that it was actually better for my little girl if I start taking medication. My little girl indeed took what she needed, but her mummy wasn't getting any nutrition and that would not be good if I kept going like that. I lost a lot of weight which could end up being bad for my little girl.
So I took away my worries about medication and took them just as the doctor prescribed them.
It was wonderful feeling better. Halfway through my second trimester I didn't need them anymore and by my third trimester I could eat pretty normal again.
I have a healthy 3 month old little girl today :)

  • tvh1982 Yes to this!
I try not to take any unnecessary medication, but if it means you will be healthier then baby will be healthier in turn! (assuming the meds are approved during pregnancy)
You want to be as fit and healthy as possible heading into the later stages of pregnancy and if you need a helping hand to do that then don't feel guilty about it!

  • I second PP's about apples hitting the spot!  Had some yesterday and today and (with caramel dip which might not be too healthy!) and it is one of the only things I can handle right now.  I'm also having aversions to meat (why is this?) so I'm looking for any alternatives where I can get protein for the babies!

  • @emgem819 I had some pretty strong meet and egg aversions early on in my pregnancy and those are my primary protein sources in my usual diet so I was worried about that too. Greek yogurt is an excellent source of protein though, and I found that I could not only tolerate it but I began craving it on a daily basis. :)

  • I'm still relying on peanut butter and chocolate milk for protein. Chicken and eggs are on the no-can-do list still. Boo.
