I didn't sign up for a labor buddy but just thought that I would update everyone here, although it's a bit late!
At my appointment yesterday a little before noon, my doctor told me to be at the hospital at 6:00 PM. We were thinking that we would have a few days to prepare....so we rushed to get me a meal before reporting to L&D.
I started pitocin at 2-3cm at 6pm, have been on it almost 24 hours at this point, and am now 7cm, 100% effaced. I lasted 30 minutes after water was broken before requesting the epidural. I honestly thought I'd be able to labor on a ball for a while....nopenopenopenope
Progress has been slow but steady. We are so hopeful to meet our team green baby soon!
So I posted my labor thread and promptly lost track of time, space, and my brain as I entered motherhood.
After being on pitocin for about 28 hours, I was finally at 10mcm and ready to push. My doctor showed up appropriately dressed in a Dr. Strange t-shirt, watched my first few pushes, and was able to help baby turn from sunny-side up. She then announced that she'd be back to check on me after her yoga class, lol.
Well, she did make it back and after about 2 hours of pushing (with a long break to labor down and the nurses positioning me to take advantage of gravity), my doctor decided that there was no way this kid was coming out vaginally. Although I knew this was a possibility due to baby's huge head, I still broke down in tears. I'd already had to be induced, now I was getting a c-section. Even though soooo many women have very scary and much more dangerous situations, I was still very sad about it.
Within 20 minutes I was being wheeled down the hall, and during the c section, I could hear the dramatics of the OB and pediatrician. It was taking a little longer to get baby out - apparently I'd pushed very effectively, and my doctor was now having to dig baby out of my pelvis. The anesthesiologist took final guesses. I said boy, DH said girl, and we finally heard our SON cry!
Rex Aaron was born - 9lbs 7oz, 21.5in long, at 10:17pm on Dec 7th.
He latched immediately, and we were very lucky I had been pumping for over a week and had brought our colostrum with us. The morning after his birth, nurses woke us up to test his blood sugar and he went to the nursery for the next 24ish hours. It was basically "Wow, that's low, give him a kiss, head down to the nursery when you can"...I cried. Again.
He had low blood sugar due to how large he was, and I spent the next day going back & forth to the nursery to feed him every 2 hours. He did great, and we never needed to supplement with anything. But it was really nerve wracking trying to bond with this new human in that environment. I have a new, much deeper respect for all the mamas that have to spend extended time in the nursery/NICU.
We ended up staying until Saturday, as I was in a lot of pain. Rex was so big for my body that just getting him out really beat me up. Even a week pp I'm in hella pain. But as of yesterday, I think half my brain is functioning again.
DH has been amazing, I had a complete meltdown when we got home and I started to actually process how all of this went down. I was very blessed with amazing care, and am so so excited to finally be a mommy.
Congratulations! He is so cute and you are a rock star for laboring 28 hours on the pit plus a c section. Thats gotta be crazy intense, to understate it.
@aevan011 I've been thinking of you! I'm really sorry to hear about the twists and turns you've had to navigate but at this point, every day will be easier. I hope you're recovery goes well and that you're able to get some rest during this time. It's hard. Your little guy is adorable!!
Congrats! He's adorable! Our little guy had some blood sugar issues at first as well. It's scary! Glad he's doing better. I hope physically and emotionally you are feeling better soon! We are here if you need anything!
He is so gosh darn cute. Congratulations! And don't worry about crying--you're not the only one. I cried so many times during our hospital/NICU stay that I must have been deemed the "crazy lady" by the NICU nurses. I get it.
Thanks, ladies! @slartybartfast - It was definitely not what I'd hoped for/expected, but you're right, it's all positive from here on out, and things are going well. Recovery has been tough but I'm extremely lucky DH was able to stay home all week with me so I could rest a bit.
@aevan011 wow. This is going to sound strange, but as I read your birth story, it reminded me a lot of my first birth experience in almost every way. I'm so sorry you had to experience that, but I truly understand the mixed emotions. It will get easier with time. Just remember that you did a great job creating a beautiful life, but it's not always easy. Congratulations on bringing Rex into the world and your arms. He is adorable
