Baby Names

When thinking about sibling names...

Questions for fellow name nerds, especially those who love 'older' names! How much do you care about place and timing of name origin when choosing sibsets?

For example, if your first child has a popular Victorian-era name, would you look for another name from that time period? Or an Anglo-Saxon royal name from the 11th century, would you use that same qualification? Would it bother you if one child had a name of Germanic origin and one Greek (if first names were not in honor of family)?

What is your thought process...

Re: When thinking about sibling names...

  • I do not care about place or timing at all. I listen for the flow of the names and if I like them.

    But I have heard of others that want to keep to the same type (IE: Greek goddess names)

  • Eh I did not.  My main this is just that the styles are totally out of left field.  Our daughter we agreed on an Italian name although my H would not for the boys.  Our surname is very Italian.  The only thing I personally wouldn't want would be complete style difference like a very classic proper name and then a very trendy modern smooshname.  All three of our kids have uncommon yet recognizable names but are all different in their origin.  I do not think what you are questioning is a big deal at all and wouldn't let it influence you.

  • It doesn't have that much importance to me. I plan to try and keep a similar "feel" to them, but I'm not worried about sticking to the same time period or origin. (I.e. Agatha and Hilde would seem fine to me, but Calliope and Wilhelmina seem a disjointed )
  • Thanks for the thoughts so far! Trying to make up my mind.

    @bbiutmcph Loving "trendy modern smooshname."

  • Agree with PP- just a similar name but not too matchy.

    DD is Savannah so I will probably choose another long, feminine name if we have another girl (Amelia, Juliette, Eloise, Delilah).

     I will NOT be choosing another place name (Charlotte, Sydney, Raleigh, Brooklyn, etc) because I think it's too "matchy" in a weird way.

    But I also would NOT be choosing a unisex name or masculine name (Quinn, Morgan, Blair, etc) because I think they seem disjointed as a sibset.

    I guess I should add that I didn't look much into the background of Savannah though, DH came up with it and I loved it so that was that!
