What do these numbers mean? SO nervous HCG & Progesterone

So I'm 4 weeks, 5 days and I had blood drawn last week and just got a call with these results. This is my first pregnancy so I'm really nervous!

4 weeks 1 Day
HCG: 971
Progesterone 16.9

4 weeks, 4 days
HCG: 2,500

How are these numbers?

The HCG for 4 weeks 1 day seems good but then it falls in range at 4 weeks, 4 days too but I'm approaching 5 weeks which means it's WAY too low (according to online chart) only! And I thought it was supposed to double each day, this test was 2 days later so I'd think it'd be higher?

I got called by nurse and she said they want me to come in tomorrow for another HCG and they'll decide if they want me to go on supplements after that.

Let's just say I'm SUPER glad that I called last week to get in as soon as I found out I was pregnant (my NFP teaching couple and primary dr suspected a luteal phase defect/ low progesterone based on my charts back in March). Also, yesterday I thought they were supposed to test progesterone but I did not see it on list and midwife was not there so they wouldn't do anything. So I messaged them in in the system today about it and they called me and said they want to do another HCG...got to be your own advocate!

I'm so nervous!

  • Howdy!  To keep from cluttering in the board, feel free to just update your original thread you made either by editing and adding the results at the bottom or responding in the comments rather than making multiple threads about the same or similar topic in the same day.

IANAD, but from my understanding, HCG should double roughly every 48-72 hours.  This is not necessarily a hard number, nor will it always be a regular increase for every woman.  You said you're looking at a chart you found on the internet.  Is it a week+day chart or is it just weekly?  Because HCG is an exponential increase, 4w4d would probably be closer in number to 4w than 5w.

The good thing is that you are showing a solid increase versus stagnation or decrease, and it does sound like your med team will be performing additional testing.  They're going to be able to give you the best interpretation of the data once they have the full picture.

  • WkoutMomtoBe I wish I had your numbers. :)

I am maybe around 4wk 5d (not sure as they think I implanted late) as of today and my last HCG reading at 4wk 2 days was only 52.6. Dr.s seemed ok with the numbers (both my fertility and the local clinic) long as my numbers had doubled within 48 hours (which they had been doing- I have had 3 HCG tests at this point). And they had been. But despite their reassurance I am nervous. :) I have another test on next Monday to make sure the numbers are still going up and then a ultrasound in a week.

Oh I they also prescribed me for Progesterone to take before bed till after week 12.

When is your ultrasound scheduled for? That should help you feel better or at least know more about what is going on. Hopefully your midwife will get back to you about supplements and more support during this time!

  • @WkoutMomtoBe Obviously they'll know more soon, but your numbers could be 100% normal. As @TheJerilu mentioned, the numbers double every 48-72 hours. This idea means much more than any online chart states. Your hCG numbers were right on point! Your second one was drawn three days later. If you multiply your initial hCG by 2.5 you'll see that your second value was right on course. Also, once the hCG is above 1200, it usually take 72-96 hours to double and then will take even longer to double after 6000.

Rest easy! I know that's easier said than done (and it's advice I need to take myself), but hopefully this thread can help ease your mind!

I'm fine with HCG/progesterone BUT they did test for a lot of other things like thyroid, APS and like 3 others I'm not sure of.  THOSE are the ones I'm curious on. I assume they're okay but if they have results why can't they tell me
  • WkoutMomtoBe As someone with APS who did extensive testing for RPL, these test results have to be sent out to specific labs that can do them. They can take up to a week for results. Also, as far as blood clotting disorders go, you have to test positively twice, six weeks apart before the diagnosis can formally be made.
