I am up in the air- I'm debating this but it is only in 0-3 and DS1 was 8lbs when born and was in newborn for a couple weeks and this outfit is only in 0-3. For DS1 the gap newborn was too big by the time we were discharged. Remember babies lose weight in the hospital! I think he was 7lbs 8ozs when we left.
Regardless i I love the kimono style onesies and always go for comfort!
I didn't even know this was a thing... These are so sweet (especially @OrangeEv, I think I need to buy that!) Somehow I figured it'd just be me, DH and baby in the car and we'd all be exhausted and go home and sleep. Is it normal to have a welcoming party or something? Clueless FTM here...

Just us and baby but the going home outfit is the one that a lot of first pictures will take place while wearing. It's often what their wearing when the hospital photog comes around, and I know I'll take "baby's first car ride" and "baby's first crib nap" photos because I'm ridiculous.

Exactly this. Our hospital had a photographer come in shortly before we left. And we have a lot of photos from discharge day.
Don't take this the wrong way but I think this is the first time I've been slightly envious of those of you expecting twins
We will probably be going with a something from Carters which will (hopefully) match as closely as possible to DS' going home outfit. We had DS' outfit made into a keepsake teddy bear by wish upon a bear- so it would be awesome to have a matching girly version for DD.
I don't have anything picked out yet. DS couldn't fit in newborn pants (waist wise) until he was over 2 months old, but premie was too short so he just went home in a onesie. Luckily it was summer. I'll probably do a dress and bloomers because of that. It's still warm here in October.
STM here... Telling ya that you need to bring two sizes of outfits. My 8lb baby somehow grew fat hairy arms inside and didn't fit her cute elephant dress for coming home.
And bring a few outfits. Things happen! Although they mostly wear a diaper and hat in the beginning. And then they get bundled up.
I plan to bring a selection of cute warm hats. And my soft nice swaddle or minky blankets. Luckily all of her newborn photos at the hospital were with her cute flowered hats and a+a blankets instead of the ugly hospital ones they give you. You wouldn't know she was basically just wearing a diaper!

I splurged and bought this hat/swaddle set to bring out sweet boy home in. I'm thinking of pairing it with just a cute pair of baby leggings and one of the onesies I made to go with the hat/swaddle combo. My favorite of the onesies is the "Baby Roberts" one! I can't wait for our sweet little Archer to be here!
Third-time mom advice: As a PP has mentioned, gowns are really difficult in a car seat. Go for pants or a one-piece sleeper instead. (Gowns are amazing for sleeping, however, regardless of sex; they make diaper changes super easy.)
Simpler is better, especially if you're not very comfortable/familiar with babies. Newborns have no head/neck control, and putting them into three different fancy things can be daunting. One-piece sleepers and kimono-style onesies are easier than anything that has to fit over the head.
Definitely bring both a NB and 0-3 month outfit.
Bring two swaddle blankets to help prop baby in the car seat, just in case.
Avoid hoodies, fancy collars, and other clothing that could potentially cover baby's mouth or face.
Unless you live in a warm climate, bring a head covering (newborns have trouble regulating their body temperature) but skip the shoes. Shoes are a PITA for babies; cute socks are an option but the easiest choice is a one-piece sleeper with feet.
There's no telling how baby will feel about the car/car seat. Go for soft, comfortable clothing to help make the trip as easy as possible. Also, some hospitals aren't as on top of the discharge process as they could be; it's not unusual to wait an hour or more for an official discharge-more reason to dress your LO for comfort.
We ended up cutting DS's going home outfit off with scissors because he had a massive merconium poo all over the onesie while we were changing him. It was horrifying and hilarious at the same time.
@FemShep YES ! To all your advice, I'm on my 4th and I remember bringing a 0-3mo. gown for my 1st son, it was too big and awkward to get in the carseat and his poor little legs looked so cold, my daughter had a blowout all over her super cute 3 piece outfit and ended up going home in the long sleeve the hospital had, my 3rd was perfect onesie pants socks beanie and blankie. I've just realized I bought a gown for my 4th's coming home outfit but I believe it came with a snap up one piece Jammie as well .. I will double check that ! Awesome tips (:
We've got a gown but I'm bringing leggings as well to keep little legs comfy and trying to find a cute "coming home" blanket that can be tucked around her but do double duty as a photo prop later. Something rainbow baby themed most likely.

I was totally going to buy the one I posted earlier, but couldn't bring myself to spend $45 on something that may not fit and they would only wear once. I found this at Kohl's and it was on sale for $12.99, I had a gift card so out of pocket total was $6. I'll probably buy a hat and bow to add color to it, but then I can put it in a shadowbox and it'll match the colors in the nursery.

@kaessi Yayy! I'm so excited to see him in it. If we deliver at the birthing center like we plan to he will only be like 4 hours old when they send us home.
