Infant car seat to convertible??

When has everyone switched from their infant car seat to the convertible one?? The infant car seat is getting super heavy to carry around!

Re: Infant car seat to convertible??

  • I think people usually switch around 1 year, but honestly I have no confirmation on that. You're right though, it's getting to be a workout Carrying infant seat around. It seems like the convertible ones are much more versatile now and can be used from birth up, so if you wanted to switch now I'm sure it would be ok- just get the seat that fits your child's weight. I really like the Chicco convertible seats that are out right now.
  • Ella has been in a convertible car seat since her first car ride home from the hospital. As PP said just make sure it is rated for your littles weight and your back seat has enough room for it to rear face.

We just ordered one so we will be switching as soon as it arrives . My baby is 18 lbs so like you said the infant seat is getting heavy. She sits in the stroller without the infant seat or I wear her when out . A lot of the seats are the "forever type" now that will go from infant up just check the weight limits and make sure it can go in reverse

  • We switched my first when she turned 1, however, she was a peanut.  I'd like to keep her there a little bit longer so I can use DD's convertible when she moves up to a booster.  But I think as long as you pick one that works with your child's weight, and fits your car, you can go ahead anytime now.

  • We switched when DD1 was close to outgrowing the height, and will wait until this one gets close as well. I'm confused at the "getting too heavy to carry" thing as a reason to buy a new one. Just leave it in the car, then? I mean, if you WANT to get a new one now, go for it! But you don't have to just because it's getting heavy if you're not ready to spend the money yet.

  • We will be switching VERY SOON.liams feet are hanging over the end (he turned 5months yesterday )we went looking at different ones and the lady helping us said we minds well get the extend to fit by grace bc even in the convertible his feet are way over
  • I think I can count on my hand the number of times I've carried my car seat (especially with my child in it). I got used to just carrying her as a precaution after my c section. Then I got paranoid about the flat head thing so I wore her when I started running errands out of the house. Now I just hold her or wear her everywhere I go. Her seat rarely leaves the car unless it needs to be cleaned or it's going in DH's car or something. I find it much more inconvenient than just holding DD but that could be because she's such a joy when we leave the house lol. She just calmly sits in my arms and soaks the world in.

P.S. I'm still kinda paranoid about the flat head thing haha
  • Well I don't see getting a new one because it's getting heavy as a confusing thing because yeah it's getting heavy .. Just because you don't think that to be reason is cool but for me it's a deciding factor .i don't see it as a waster of money because guess what you have to get one eventually and maybe that's the eventually for some of us
  • I don't hardly ever take mine out of the car. He hates sitting in it. He is  rarely content in it unless we're moving in the car and he falls asleep. But it is heavy when I do carry it. I just carry him on me and carry him in and out of the car to wherever we're going.
  • We switched my older son when he was about 8 months because he had reached the height limit. he also loved his infant seat and would sleep amazing in it- so I let him often nap in it if he fell asleep on the way home or something. I would've kept him in it longer if it had been safe. My 5 month old HATES that same seat lol. He is in it literally only in the car - I wear or carry him otherwise. Ironically, my older son never had a flat head but this baby has a seriously flat spot! I'm trying to keep the baby in the infant seat as long as possible so I can move him into the convertible seat when his brother flips to a forward facing seat (I've heard they are cheaper). For the record, I HIGHLY recommend the Britax click tight convertible. They are amazingly easy to install - we also have a Chicco nextfit and like it, but it is not as easy to install.
  • I didn't switch car seats with all my kids until they were 1 or older. I bring the stroller everywhere I go so I don't lug the car seat around. Only time I hold it is from the house to the Tahoe.
  • We're talking about trading in our car seat for the graco forever in September because DD is getting heavy and tall, she could stay in it longer but can't pass up the deal on a new one, especially since we've gotta buy 2.  Do what's right for you I say!

No need to get defensive. My point is that if its heavy, you can just leave it in the car (just like a convertible would be). There's no need to lug the seat around just because it's removable.. You can leave it in the car just the same as a convertible. But again, if you want a new seat now, then get it. There's no magic time that you "should" switch, it's all personal (unless, of course, your LO is outgrowing the ht/wt).

It's not a safety issue to have their feet hanging over if you find a seat you really like. In fact, especially with a tall kiddo like yours, you're pretty much guaranteed that they'll need to bend/cross their legs in the seat at some point while rear facing. Even my shorty DD1 had to (Chicco NextFit). It looks uncomfortable to us, but it doesn't bother them :)

Not bring defensive sorry if you took it that way --but this is the exact point I was making
  • Our infant seat only leaves the car when I'm bringing him in the house after daycare because it's easier when I have so many bags to carry or when he's asleep and I'm going to pop it onto the stroller. Otherwise, I use my Ergobaby carrier. We have the Graco 4Ever that's currently in dad's truck, but we'll switch it to my car for Harrison to use so the new baby can use the infant one.
