First US: possible bad news, or maybe OK news? (Update: loss)

Hi all,

I had my first ultrasound with an ultrasound tech today. According to my LMP, I'm supposed to be 9 weeks, 1 day, but the baby is measuring 6 weeks, 4 days (and actually, the tech couldn't see a baby). I am feeling devastated, but am waiting to hear from my OB-GYN or NP. At my first prenatal checkup, my NP said she thought everything was fine because I had been having all the classic pregnancy symptoms like fatigue and nausea, and my "uterus felt like a pregnant uterus." But she didn't do an ultrasound. I did have a bunch of lab work done, which she said was all normal, but I don't know if she checked hcg levels. I am crossing my fingers for a miracle, but don't expect there to be one. If anyone has any similar experiences, good or bad, I'm open to hearing them. Thanks for reading.

I haven't had a similar experience, but unless you were tracking Ovulation I wouldn't worry too much about measuring behind. Based on LMP I'm like 7w+5d, based on O I'm 7w+1d. And I've had cycles where I've O'd CD 29 or 30 so if I'd gotten pregnant those months I might be 2 weeks further along based on LMP verse O date. Try not to panic until you hear from the doctor. I was in a similar situation about 4 months ago. I did a lot of research at the time and found many positive stories and many negative stories. It really could go either way. For me, it went downhill. At 7 weeks I was measuring 5 weeks and change, at 8+ weeks I was measuring 6 (with a faint HB), then at 9 weeks the HB was gone and I was still measuring 6. I knew it could not have been much-delayed ovulation because I got my positive HPT at 3w6d.

Thanks for everyone who has replied so far. I was tracking ovulation with temps, etc., and my cycles were pretty regular. I'll try to stay positive.

Did your doctor schedule a follow up U/S to check growth? Or beta HCGs?

I would ask that they start taking hcg and schedule a follow up u/s.

Did they order a followup ultrasound/appointment for you? Bloodwork, anything?

I am hoping for a positive outcome for you. Was the sac measuring 6w4d since they couldn't see the baby? When did you get your BFP? I have had two experiences with slow growing babies, and both were a chromosomal issue that led to a loss. Being that far off, unfortunately, sounds too similar. I hope you get some answers soon, the waiting is the worst.

Thanks, all. I'll probably hear from the doctor about next steps tomorrow since my appointment was late in the day. I had my BFP at 3 weeks, 4 days. We'll see, but I know too to be mentally prepared for bad news, though I still hope for the best.

FX for a good outcome for you whatever your Dr. decides should be the next steps.

With my first pregnancy, I went in for my 1st US just shy of 9weeks and baby only measured 7w1d and my OB couldn't find a heartbeat. She said she was pretty sure the pregnancy was over, but offered to do another ultrasound 3 days later to see if there was any growth or if a heartbeat could be detected. Unfortunately, the 2nd US showed the same and I had a D&C a few weeks later.

I spoke with my NP this morning. She said the radiologist could not detect an embryo or fetus or heartbeat, and that while my ultrasound raised suspicions of a miscarriage, at this point the ultrasound can't be considered diagnostic. I go back for another ultrasound next Thursday afternoon and will speak with a doctor about it immediately afterward. She told me to try to stay positive because she has seen cases like this turn out well, but I admit I'm finding it hard to stay upbeat. I also don't like the extra waiting I'll have to do, but at least I'll get to speak with a doctor immediately afterward to talk about next steps. Thanks for your support, everyone!

Edit: Also she said I'm measuring 6-7 weeks, I think based on the yolk sac.

Hi all,

I just learned that I didn't have any growth compared to last week, and there is still no heartbeat, so I've had a missed miscarriage. I am sad, but glad to have a diagnosis now. I will probably schedule a D&E for early next week. Thanks to everyone who shared their previous experiences of loss so that I could know what to expect.

So very sorry. That sounds very similar to my experience. Personally, I held it together for a while at the time, but my emotions did catch up with me over the following couple of weeks. Be gentle and generous with yourself and take time to heal. The ladies over in TTCAL are wonderful if/when you are ready for that.
