Baby Names

Mary Helen

So, we are thinking of naming our third child and first girl after our mothers, which was our original thought for a girl when we were pregnant with our first 5 years ago.  What do you think of Mary Helen.  I am on the fence as to whether to call her Mary or Mary Helen in every day life.  We like old fashioned names, but are no longer religious.  I think Mary is such a cute name for a little girl.  Tell me any positive or negative things that you think of please.

Runners up at this point are Fiona, Violet, and Eleanor.
My TTC History:
2009: missed miscarriage #1 at 9 weeks (trisomy 16)

2012: Baby #1
2014: Baby #2
October 2015: missed miscarriage #2 at 11 weeks (trisomy 22)
March 2016 BFP#5, due November 2016.

Re: Mary Helen

  • I would do Mary as the first name and Helen as the middle name. It's nice! And you can still call her Mary Helen.

  • I love that you want to honor the mothers. My only comment is that two two-syllable names can sound a bit choppy (MAR-y HEL-en). Helen Marie or Mary Helene would break it up a little and still be a nice tribute. Having said that, if you love Mary Helen as a double name - go with it! I don't think as many girls have double names any more and they are quite cute.

  • Double names are not at all common where I live and I'm not a fan personally. They always remind me of nuns or those that are super religious. Again probably because that's the only time personally I hear them. However both Mary and Helen are nice names. I like Mary FN Helen MN and using both. I also think all your back up names are nice.

  • My grandmother's name was Mary Helen. I like it a lot.
  • I think Mary Ellen flows a lot better than Mary Helen, but I do like both names individually.
  • I seriously dig this name. A lot. Good job Borg.
  • I think Mary is a cute name, but personally I would put Helen in the middle name slot.
Also like your runner up names!
    DD #1 Eva- April 2011
    DD #2 Violet- October 2013
    DD#3 Due New Year's Eve 2016

  • Mary Helen definitely sounds like a nun but as a fn/MN it's fine...I just wouldn't do the double fn.

  • Mary is a cute, classic name for a little girl. Not feeling the MN because it's NMS but if it's a name that has a significant meaning to it then my opinion shouldn't really matter ;) Go with Helen if you are naming them after a certain person/relative
