Lions and Tigers and Canker Sores, Oh My!

My mouth hurts guys. I have had recurring canker sores for weeks now and nothing seems to help. I've never had this before. Is this a pregnancy thing? My doc said it's a weird virus and my son had it just before me so for a while I've been going with that explanation. But now i'm wondering if its a pregnancy reaction. They went away for a few days but I had spicy food yesterday and they are back in full force. I'm a big salty, spicy, acidy food eater. Has anyone else had this reaction?

Ouch! That sounds painful. I haven't had that but would have trouble eating bland foods for too long. Those things HURT even if you just have one for a few days! Is anbesol ok for pregnancy? I hope it goes away soon!
  • Maybe it could be heart burn? I knew someone who had bad heartburn in their sleep and would wake up with canker sores.

Yes I am having heartburn and canker sores. I didn't with my previous 2 girls. I gargle salt water, and that seems to help.

  • Regular toothpaste exacerbates canker sores. You need to get a toothpaste that does not have the foaming ingredient. I can remember what it's called but you should google it. I used to suffer from multiple canker sores until I switched toothpaste.

In my experience canker sores come out for a number of reasons. I would sometimes get 10-15 at a time. After years of trying a million things I found mine were stress related.

I agree with @TheBorg7of9 that for some people it is the toothpaste. I think sensodyne makes it without the foaming ingredient, unfortunately that was not my problem.

So I guess what I'm trying to say is maybe yours are just pregnancy related. Which would suck because I do know how awful they are. Sorry I'm not being more helpful!

  • I am prone to canker sores and found that switching to a toothpaste without sodium lauryl sulfate is best for preventing them.
    Avoiding soda also helps me.
  • Thanks for the toothpaste advice all. I'll look into that.  These mother f$&*!ers hurt!
  • Try swishing with Peroxyl rinse. I think Colgate makes it. Or your dentist should be able to prescribe a prescription rinse that should help.
  • Dental hygienist here. Try swishing a mixture of 1/2 Maalox and 1/2 liquid Benadryl then spit for some relief. Also agree with getting a toothpaste without sls!
