Infertility

Intro: child/pregnancy/loss mentioned

Hi everyone. I am starting my first IUI cycle tomorrow and will move onto IVF next month if unsuccessful, so I thought this might be a good place to hang out and get/give any support I can.

(TW: child/pregnancy loss mentioned below)

Background: I am TTC #2 and dealing with secondary infertility, though I imagine our fertility has always been sub-par. We have been TTC this time around actively for a little over a year. We have had one loss @ 9 weeks in November. At our fertility workup with the RE, I came out all good, but my husband was discovered to have low motility and volume (2 semen analyses done). This probably shouldn't have been too much of a shock, he has 2 brothers who have dealt with infertility and a history of a testicular injury. They suggested to start with a clomid IUI cycle, so we did the paperwork, got the meds etc. Our RE is on vacation this week and yesterday we got a call from her coordinator that after the new semen analysis (even though it was better than the first) that her new recommendation is IVF, but that we can do this cycle as is for now since yesterday was CD and I doubt we could get everything set up for IVF in such a short time period, but maybe I'm wrong.

Anyways, after doing some reading, I'm not all that confident in our plan considering the sperm concerns. As of now we are doing clomid 100 mg, ovidrel trigger and IUI. My first monitoring ultrasound is on CD 10 ( I normally ovulate CD 12/13) and I start clomid tomorrow. This process has moved extremely fast for us, our first appt was March 25th, so it's been a bit of a whirlwind.

Thanks for having me, and any feedback, opinions etc are always welcome.

Re: Intro: child/pregnancy/loss mentioned

  • Hello and welcome!  Often REs will suggest IVF right off the bat with MFI issues... not because IUI can't be successful it's just a lower success rate.  We were told we can do some IUIs first but the best recommendation is IVF... we also have low motility, and low morphology.  About to try IUI #3 then move on to IVF if unsuccessful.  Feel free to join us over in the May IUI thread, since it looks like maybe your IUI will be in May?  I'm looking at starting my cycle next week.  Good luck to you!! :)

  • I have done 3 Clomid IUIs so far with a MFI issue (morphology).  IUI is definitely a boost all around--hopefully you get more eggs from the Clomid so more chance a healthy sperm will meet an egg, the wash and direct injection into the uterus should help a bit as well--but the chances are not like the chances with IVF.  It's definitely disheartening to see the statistics, especially when you are about to start an IUI cycle (I remember looking at the charts when I was starting), but it's not nothing.  Good luck and fx for you!

  • Thanks for the welcomes! I guess I'm more hopeful than if we were just trying on our own, so that's what I"m holding on to. I spoke with the nurse earlier  and she said we will meet after our IUI and plan for an IVF cycle next cycle should the IUI be unsuccessful. Marching forward!
