If you are treating your child's reflux with zantac- do not get it filled at walgreens- it is made of 7.5% alcohol. Make sure you go elsewhere and get alcohol-free. Alcohol makes reflux worse!!'

Re: **warning: reflux meds

  • Could you not ask the pharmacist for a Zantac version that is alcohol-free? How is it that they have a 75% alcohol Zantac? Never mind that. From what I looked up, it's 7.5%, not 75%. 75% would be an astronomical amount of alcohol in any medicinal syrup.

    "Zantac Syrup contains alcohol

Zantac Syrup contains 7.5% w/v alcohol. Each spoonful (5 mL) of syrup therefore contains almost 400 mg of alcohol. This is equal to the amount of alcohol in one spoonful (5 mL) of wine or two spoonfuls (10 mL) of beer. It may be harmful if you are an alcoholic. You also need to be aware of the alcohol content:

    •   if you are pregnant or breast-feeding

    •   if you have epilepsy, liver disease, or have had an injury to your brain or other condition affecting your brain

    •   if your child is being treated.

It may also change or increase the affect of other medicines.

Talk to your doctor if you are concerned. They may suggest an alternative treatment."

  • There is an alcohol-free option. Not offered my walgreens. I'm letting mothers know.

Ok. I get that. However, it may not be that way at every Walgreens across the country. The OP could have been worded a little better like, "Hey, I went to get my baby's Zantac and my Walgreens didn't have a non-alcohol version, so you may want to double-check that if your baby is prescribed Zantac."

  • I had it for my LO, he slept a lot on it!
  • Most pharmacies carry the alcohol free version as only children use it. It tastes AWFUL and a lot of parents have a hard time getting their kids to take it. Pharmaceutically speaking, from the manufacturers standpoint, the alcohol covers up the horrible taste of the medicine. That said- if my child needed it, I would make sure it was the alcohol free version which any pharmacy should be able to order.

Side note- if your child ever needs a dose of steroids, called prednisolone, it has a very high alcohol content version and an alcohol free version also.
