Anyone else have REALLY bad pubic bone pain?

I am new to this and am in need of some advice. Just found out I have SPD (Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction) and have been in so much pain I can't even lift my legs to put pants on! I didn't have this during my first pregnancy so not sure how to deal with it. Any suggestions?

Re: Anyone else have REALLY bad pubic bone pain?

  • Lurking from August.  I have it too. A heating pad on low (keep it down in the hip area, not right next to you abdomen), a chiropractor, and husband hip rubs/professional massages were the dr. suggestions that helped when I was pregnant with DS.

FWIW, the pain subsided to about 50% within a day or two of giving birth, and it was a distant memory by a week or two after.

  • Yes. You can look up exercises for it online but chances are, your doctor will send you to a physical therapist.

I am wearing a very good maternity band with groin straps. It's not convenient when I need to use the bathroom but it helps! It's called the BellyBand. Still, I try to move slowly and I am not above taking Tylenol.
  • I second the support band very helpful to add in stability.

I'm on baby #4 and I know the pain you speak of. Mine isn't as bad as yours sounds but I know lots of mom's with 3,4,5 kids that says it gets worse with each baby. Chiropractor has been the most common and helpful suggestion from what I have heard. Kegals help to strengthen your pelvic floor and even now can help! Support bands are wonderful as well to help hold everything in and to not make your body work so hard.

  • Yes on the pain... Super bad pain... Get a belly band... Life saver
  • Also,  A little bit of the mechanics of it, when pregnant, ligaments start to loosen up. There are ligaments holding the two parts of your pelvic bone together in the front. These get loose and that is what cause the pain.  And yes, I also see a chiropractor. I have always done Kegals.  They are generally a good idea anyhow to strengthen the pelvic floor and to maintain great bladder control.  And as others have said, it should get better pretty much right after birth.

Note: even though the pain will go away after birth you should get exercising. It doesn't have to be hard core but a post natal trainer or even just a yoga class will do wonders for your body. Need to strengthen it back up so of you have a another child the pain won't be so bad, and better over all for your future health. Don't want to sneeze and leak at 50 years old, strengthen your pelvic floor!

  • I have also had it very severe this time (second pregnancy). PPs have covered it pretty well. I've been seeing a chiropractor, prenatal yoga and definitely had to quit volleyball early as it was making it much more severe. I find it improves once I'm up and moving, so walking seems to help as well.
  • I have been having this pain as well! This is our fourth and I remember this more of a discomfort in the last month or two...this time I've had the pain for the past couple of months already! My doctor did recommend heating pads, I just never seem to get around to it. I hope you find something to ease the pain.

Yep! Does anyone else's pelvic bones pop when they roll over, or sacrum area-ish pop when they get up?

  • @KASG Yep... mine pops in the perineal area when I roll from my side onto my back, and holy crap it hurts!  It'll also make clicking noises for several steps after I get up out of bed.

So there's this boy. He kinda stole my heart. He calls me "Mom"

  • I have it too, and it started at 13 weeks (so 12 weeks ago). I never thought I would have the pregnancy waddle so early, but that literally started at 13 weeks (before I even had a belly!) because my pelvis hurt so bad, 24 hours a day. My OB suggested physical therapy or a support band. I have done neither and am just plowing through the pain. I have found that even though it hurts when I am mobile and doing things, it doesn't hurt nearly as bad as if I sit for a long time and then start moving. It sucks....but I am crossing my fingers that the next few months go by quickly!

  • Yes, just recently (in the last couple of days). I'm 24 weeks now. My OB has suggested a support band. I'm also hoping that my weekly prenatal yoga helps.
  • I have had this the past two months. I teach first grade and am on my feet all day at work. I have slowed down on the gym and tried to keep my feet up after work as much as possible. This has by far been the most painful symptom of my pregnancy. I have an appointment the 18th so I will be sure to ask and share any advice the doctor has. Mine feels like pain and pressure down very low, it seems worse at night. Put your feet up ladies and hope your pain eases soon!

Have any of you actually gone to PT for this?? I'm curious as to how that'd go.

I do like prenatal yoga, but I can't go every week unfortunately.

ETA: @BostonBaby1 if I'm go ogling exercises, what would I search for? Slash, what exercise(s) specifically would I look for?

  • @KASG I did PT last month for sciatic piriformis. So a slightly different area but similar pain I would say. However I have front low pain in the pelvic/pubic bone and I know none of the stretches I have will really do much there but my belt helps a lot. It's a SI LOC belt so a little different then just a pregnancy support one

  • I haven't read what anyone else has written and haven't been diagnosed with anything but this is my third pregnancy and first time I've had any issues. My pubic bone clicks a lot when I bend in certain directions which really hurts, just like when knees click randomly when you bend but more painful. Also the first pregnancy I've had terrible back pain. My dr just says it's just because of having more children my body is more stretched already

    pubic symphysis exercises ...

And this is a good explanation of it:

  • I started to feel an increasing discomfort starting at about 17/18 weeks and it got worse throughout the second trimester. I wore a support band while upright (walking, cleaning around the house, etc.) and made sure I continued to stay active but not strain myself. My doctor said it's completely normal and basically told me it will go away when I have the baby.

Well, here I am at just shy of 29 weeks and the pain is 95% gone. I still get a little discomfort when I get up after sitting for long periods of time, but nothing like it was before. I chalk it up to a shift in weight and position of the baby now that I'm much bigger. I don't think it's anything I actually did but I still would recommend the belly support, maintaining/starting gentle exercise to stay active, kegels, and a warm compress on the bone area. That all helped relieve the pain.

  • I also had this pretty bad for a few weeks but I am 28 weeks now and it seems to have gone away 95% comes and goes if I'm doing too much, but I'm also on my feet all day at work so that's hard.
Now I seem to be getting sciatic pain in addition that comes and goes which is rough. Only thing that helps is laying on my side to relieve it. Countdown is on!!

@PhoebeJune1984--- mine started that early too! I was like wtf I'm barely pregnant yet can hardly walk.
  • Well I can barely walk, sit or lay down so
sleeping should be fun.. Not! It also feels like I have a pinched nerve now in my butt yay for sciatic and pubic pain at the same time! I think I need a donut to sit on at work. I got so uncomfortable after about 20 minutes. Anyone else?

I could have written this. I'm also a third time mom and this is the first time the pain has been this severe. I've had the clicking thing un the pubic region, too. The other day while just standing and switching positions it was clicking in and out. The pain is bad but after I get done working a 6 hour shift on my feet, it's excruciating. I hate complaining but this is bad. My ob also says it's because this is my third and apparently this is what happens when your body gets stretched over and over..
