Switch to the "big boy" or "big girl" bed. What age?

What age did you make the transition and how smooth was it?  My DS will be 2 on Saturday and has been showing signs of wanting to sleep in the "big boy" bed. Well the room is done. He iswas VERY excited about it and has slept in the new room/bed successfully...once. Since then, we go thru all the routine of bedtime, but when its time for me to leave and close the door, it's instant meltdown. He is at the door and screaming for me or my husband. After a few small battles he eventually he ends up in his crib. We have "the blanket", every stuff animal he wants, a bright nightlite and I have even gotten him his own flashlight and nothing is working. I don't want to press the issue. Any advice?

  • No advice - we're planning on keeping the girls in their cribs until they are sixteen.  =)

Seriously, we're planning on holding out until they are 2.5 so that we can get through the summer in cribs at the family cottage which we visit frequently at during the summer.

I know several people who've had success with "super nanny" techniques.

  • My DD was 13 mos when we converted her crib into a "transitional bed." The transition for us has been incredibly smooth. I think that it worked out so well, though, because we did it when we moved into our new place in PA (we just moved up here from FL at the beginning of December), rather than putting the crib together as, well, a crib.

DD loves that she can get up and down by herself, and she still waits for us to come and get her out of bed in the morning (though I have a feeling that won't be the case for much longer). She's fallen out of bed a couple of times (within the first couple of days), but I think that has more to do with getting used to not having a full side rail on the outside edge than anything.

    HTH and GL!

  • we put the bed in the same room as the crib.  We put Freddie in the bed the first time all sat in his bed and laid in his bed and read books.  Then went on with the usual bedtime routin which is DH reads three books.  Each night he has been really easy.  Infact a couple times he has come in during the morning after he has woken up.  DS was not STTN before.
  • Probably in late spring because we'll need the crib for the baby.  If it turns into a huge issue, I will likely just move her to the PNP in her big girl room until she is ready.  I figure I will leave the door cracked open but put a baby gate across the doorway.

  • We put DS in his big boy bed/ room around Thanksgiving, when he was about 2-1/2.  I was scared to death to try it, but with a new baby coming, we had to so he could adjust.  It was incredibly easy for us.  He loves sleeping in his new bed, and has had no issues at all.  He goes right to sleep and sleeps all night, and doesn't even try to get up out of the bed in the morning- he just waits for me to come get him.  I'm wondering if maybe your DS just isn't ready?....
  • itll be a few months more lol she is too sneaky to have that much free reign. and she loves her crib. it has everything she needs and she makes it her domain, kwim? ill wait until she is mature enough to stay in bed and not just play with her diapers and clothes all night lol
