I just picked a specialist to start my husband and i path to our next decision...and was wondering how many of you have prepared yourself for your first appointment to start this process? any questions i should ask? im so nervous and confused
In regards to questions concerning IUI/IVF many of the women here will not be able to be of much assistance as many of us have not experienced it. I suggest checking out the Infertility board for more information and to connect with women that are going through the same thing as you.
Also, please read THE ULTIMATE TTGP GUIDE and The Bump Guidelines. Please lurk to get a feel for the boards first. When you are ready you can participate in the WTO(Waiting to Ovulate) and TWW(Two Week Wait) Boards. The R/R/CS(Rant/Rave/Chart Stalk) is a section of both boards that allow you to ask questions or just voice your frustrations during this process. The best of luck to you.

Your first appointment with an RE is an easy one. They'll go over all the tests you might need. They may look at your charts, if you're charting. And depending on the timing of the appt they might go ahead and draw blood. My first appointment made me feel so much better. It gave me something to be doing, it was a step in the right direction. Ask all the things in your mind. All the things your anxious mind goes to. Here were mine:
- what will treatments cost, worst and best case scenario? - what are the live birth statistics for someone my age for each treatment type? - if I have unexplained infertility, what then? - please go through every eventuality and what if, what is the process for very path we could ever go down and will you please hand me a tissue while I ugly cry in your office?
My doctor is amazing. If it doesn't feel right and you don't click with your doctor find another one.
And good luck!

Damn....I wish I remembered this one. I just ugly cried and then when she walked out DH handed me what I thought was a tissue. It was a disinfectant wipe. It hurt.

This is a great place to start, also maybe go in mentally prepared to give labs (like eat before). I had a basic IF work up as well as a RPL done which was a little over 40 vials of blood.
OP, to add to what the others have said, I haven't had my first RE appt yet, but they already sent a ton of information on what things cost and what to expect. The initial appt includes a transvaginal ultrasound, so it may be good to prep yourself for some poking and prodding! Not sure how standard that is, but I would also expect your office will prep you for the first appt at some point before you go.
