Pregnant after IF

Prenatal Vitamins, PIO, Estrace questions...

Okay, so I'm having a huge brain fart...

1.  Prenatal vitamins are to be taken during the entire pregnancy, correct?  I think so, but wanted to double-check.  Really don't mean to be daft..

2. Coming off of estrace and PIO... My RE said I could get off them this week.. but I'm stressing about this.  I know that I'm one of the latest to come off of them (end of week 12).  Did you all go cold turkey or did you wean yourself off of them?  I take 2cc of PIO a day, so I was wondering if I should taper myself down throughout the week.  Same with estrace.  I'm currently on it 3x a day, and didn't know if I needed to taper off of those as well.

What did your REs say and what did you do (if it was any different).

Re: Prenatal Vitamins, PIO, Estrace questions...

  • Prenatals should be taken throughout the pregnancy and while you're breastfeeding (if you are). So not nearly done with them ;)

I was on Prometrium and told to stop cold turkey at 12 weeks...I did taper it, because I was anxious about it (my progesterone was measure again at 8 weeks and was at the level of someone in their 3rd tri, so I was afraid of whether a sudden drop could cause any issues. All was fine, and I probably tapered for 3-4 days (and really ended at 12 weeks). But plenty of women here stopped cold turkey way earlier and have been fine. So in retrospect (now that I've had my own freakout and got over it), I think it would have been perfectly fine to stop that way, and possibly earlier as well.

  • Yes, prenatals for your entire pregnancy. I believe you also take them afterwards if your breastfeeding.

I didn't do IVF, but I was on vaginal estrace 2xs a day and crinone 1x a day. I stopped both cold turkey when recommended. I stopped estrace at 6w5d and stopped crinone at 12w6d. It's a little nerve wrecking to stop cold turkey, but by 12 weeks, the placenta has taken over production of your hormones, so it'll be okay!

  • Thank you, ladies!  I have a ton of prenatals, and I figured that'd still be a daily.. I'm okay with that (but hate the smell of them).  You both have put my mind at ease about the estrace and pio... My sore back side can't wait to  be able to be itch, welt, and bruise free!

  • My RE told me that at 10 weeks the placenta is producing enough hormones and to stop cold turkey. Today is my last day and like you, it feels weird to just stop. She did get me pregnant, I guess I should trust her

  • I'm hoping that for my own peace of mind my doc weans me off my meds. Down 2mg a day of estrace so far, hoping to go down 2 more this week and reduce PIO by .5cc.

  • @Piperella I use CVS prenatal gummies, and I LOVE them! I seriously can't wait to eat them every night. Maybe you'd like those better?

  • I am taking theranatal plus vitamins. After having the gastric sleeve, I need this type of vitamin as it has the extra vitamins that I am needing to supplement my eating.  I bought a six month supply of the theranatal complete (I think that's the name) that includes an extra pill that is to help lactation.  Thank you so much for the suggestion @riveridgional!  I'm lucky it is just the smell and not the taste/side effects that bother me. :)
  • I'm only 8 weeks, but my Dr said he will wean me off of pio and the minivelle patches starting next week. I am on 3 patches and pio 1cc 2x a day as well. I think each Dr is different. Maybe you could verify with your nurse if they want you to wean off or stop cold turkey.
