Music in the Womb?

Do any of you play music to your womb or plan to?

I know there are varying opinions and research out there about it, so what do you all think?
As an amateur musician (married to a band director) I figure it can't hurt, and you can't start too early!

Re: Music in the Womb?

  • When I first started feeling her move a lot more I would play music for her (from my iPhone facing my belly). My husband and I had a lot of fun putting together a playlist to start her "musical education". Lately I mostly just listen to it myself while I'm doing things around the house. I figure she can hear me singing to the songs.

  • I wouldn't say that I specifically put headphones on my belly but I'm always singing and play music in the car and in the house.  I am hoping baby comes out as musical as my first LO.  My son and I sing together all the time.

I feel a little pressured lol I sing and play several instruments, as does my husband. So everyone's like "oh your baby will be SO GREAT at music!" (And math, and English...) but I'm like...well what if she ISN'T? Lol

  • When I was pregnant with DD she hated country music and loved rock. She still hates country and is all about her rock music, sigh. Lol

  • We actually have the belly music system I use it a few times a week and do classical music or other chill music I like. I don't know if it is effective but my husband really wanted me to do

I was given the belly buds by a friend who SWEARS by them. She said she played the same album for months before her daughter was born and then once her daughter came she would fall asleep anytime that album was put on. I figured it can't hurt, so I've been playing one of my favorite albums whenever I remember (a few times a month). We'll see.

I did with DD1 at the request of my doctor to get her to flip to head down. Apparently the theory is they will migrate to the noise. DD1 is very musically inclined. Not sure if that has anything to do with it but I'd like to think so.

ETA:I just used regular cheapo headphones, hooked them up to my IPod, and played 8 hours of music a day if not more.

  • Just food for thought, I did read that if you're using your iPhone, etc, then put it in airplane mode to reduce radiation, etc.
I have also heard that music you play while pregnant will soothe your baby outside the womb - pretty cool!

  • I never played music or sang to my belly with my first and he is an incredibly musical toddler.  Started singing recognizable tunes at 14 months and loves singing and circle time more than anything else.  I don't think it will hurt, but it's definitely not necessary either :)

You played music on your stomach for more than 8 hours a day?  How is that even possible...?

Am I not understanding something?  I've got way too much to do to spend 1/3 of my 24 hour day with headphones attached to my belly.

Maybe she wore a fanny pack? Not sure how the headphones would stay on if she was walking around. Maybe she has a desk job?

  • I read to my belly and played music to my daughter.  When I was pregnant with my son, I ran out of time for reading to him but figured he heard me reading to his sister at bedtime.  I still played him music though and towards the end, I swear he was kicking to the beats.  He loves classic rock and to this day, the only thing that will get him to calm down when he's having a meltdown is to play 'Downtown' by Macklemore.
