How much on average do you spend on baby shower gifts?

I just finished our guest list for our shower host. It made me wonder if I should add more to our registry. Our parents have all graciously picked the big items to gift us. Based on what I personally spend on shower gifts, $50-$75, I don't think we have enough items on it. Our absolute most expensive item is $50. Should I just assume people will buy clothes to fill in to get to the desired amount they like to spend? I thought it would be fun to "poll the audience". If I somehow missed a poll like this when I searched, GIF party it up!

  • I think it depends on the person and which child this is. I usually do from $25-50 on average. I have spent more, and have been under $25.

The last baby shower (which I was unable to go), I bought a pack of diapers, a 'pretty gift' and a $25 gift card to a really good used clothing store (Kids to Kids). It is their 2nd child, but the other sex.
    Thank God for Raid.

  • Honestly, it depends on how well I know the person. BBF or SIL will receive a more thoughtful and personal gift than some rando cousin 5 times removed.
Absolutely agree on it depending on how well you know them. I was hoping the "on average" would help cover the ever varying amounts. You are a nicer lady than I, I totally skip over the 5x removed cousin's shower ;)
  • It all depends on who we are shopping for. I have a habit of buying all of the first aid/grooming/safety gear on the registry and maybe one or two cute things. I call this the 'Don't drop the baby' kit and it normally sets me back $75-ish. For my husband's godson we dropped $250-ish on the convertible carseat.
  • Haha I learned last week never to mention $$! ;) I agree with others though, depends on how well I know the person. I do try to buy practical items off of registries though as thats typically what is really needed rather than clothes or blankets. I usually try to add one little something for the mama to be as well.
  • For people that I am not close to, usually around $25-$35. For someone that I am close to $50-$60. I find no reason to spend any more than that, unless it comes to one of my siblings having a baby (in which case I would spend more, but they have yet to have kids).

  • what @megstervt said!! 100% true unless it's a really close family member and I want to splurge on a big ticket item
  • It depends on who and where. Family house shower i recently went to i gave 75. If its in a hall or restaurant maybe more. We are italian as well so its usually more then if its a friends shower.
  • I love buying baby things so when I buy a baby shower gift it's almost always around that $100 mark.
  • It totally depends on who.. For my sister in law I think I spent about $500 (ouchhhhh - I totally overdid it).  For best friends about $125, for close friends about $60-$75 and for less close friends I would say $20-$40.

  • I normally spend around $50 which seems to be the norm around here.

I want to be some of your guys friends!
  • I spent close to $200 on my sisters first child (I bought her the stroller). For very good friends, maybe $50-$75. Less close friends or family $30-$50. This is however what we're able to afford. My sister isn't able to spend as much as I am (since she has two kids now) so I highly doubt I'll get a $200 gift from her. This doesn't bother me but it's important to note because even within the same family or social circles, people have different incomes and priorities and that's ok.

  • It totally depends on the person and your relationship with them. For the last baby shower gift I purchased, my SIL, MIL, and I chipped in for a crib for a family friend that was really struggling financially. I would NOT be doing that for most people. I usually get something off the registry + a cutesy outfit. I totally agree, people have different incomes/priorities, it is a gift and it is the thought that counts!

  • I went with 25-50.  That's for just the randos.  If it's a close friend or family, I will spend more.

  • I spent around $50-$60 at the last baby shower I went to.  I only got two nice blankets (she had twins) and a grooming kit.  Wish I could do more, but everything adds up fast.
  • For my best friend I bought her a high chair...think I spent $125....for good friends I spend $50-$75. I would not go below $25 though.
