Is it just cluster feeding or should I be worried?!

I'm s tearful after a tough night!
Last night was the second time I really felt concerned!
She wanted feeding around the click from 6 until 2am! There was no let up! She was crying violently in between and wouldn't go down at all! Arms aand legs kicking and head rooting like crazy! Found it hard to get her to latch with all the wriggling and fussing and then she'd nod off. As soon as I moved here into crib she would stir and whole thing started again!
She went down eventually at 2 until almost 6 but im emotional and exhausted and hubby is leaving for work! Should I be concerned? Call the doc? I hate seeing her like that and im already anxious about the day ahead now!

  • It will make you feel better to call a nurse or doctor- so maybe you should regardless- how old is your bub? Your milk might still be coming in and she might be trying to increase your supply? I know how stressful it is but are you getting plenty of wet and dirty diapers still? That is the main thing to take note of. Try not to stress she might just be one of those bubs that wants to be with mama rather than in the bassinet. I'm sure you are doing an amazing job- and trust your instinct- if you want to call a doctor don't feel embarrassed to do it. Good luck let us know how you go.

  • We certainly have long stretches where she is kick that but not quite as long as you describe; however, maybe at some point your baby just got overtures from going so long without sleeping. When my LO goes 4 hrs without a regular sleep (her doing not mine) she gets crazy - will nurse for a minute, fall asleep, cry when I pull her off, nurse for another minute, etc. the only way I am able to break the chain and prevent her from doing it for an additional 4 hrs is to keep her sleeping on my boob (not latched but on it so she can smell it), then after 1/2 an hour take her off and hold her for an additional hour. We don't usually hold her when she sleeps but when she is overtired we do just to get her some deep sleep
  • My son is a crazy cluster feeder since birth (12 days old). He will eat/short sleep/change/repeat for 2-3 hours. I've found when he has already been eating and starts screaming even if he is acting hungry that he either needs to burb or snuggle surprisingly. During these fits it is really hard to get him to latch or stay eating which he doesn't typically struggle with. I do burp him but probably not as much since I bf. So for him I just prop him on my chest and try to burp him and he either does or falls asleep. Win either way :)
Hopefully this helps some. Good luck since a screaming baby is exhausting! I was up until 6am 2 nights ago.

  • Thanks guys! She's just two weeks old yest. She never seems to have much wind either but think that's normal for newborn right?
I'll try call the nurse later - always reluctant to do that!
She Obv needs to sleep - for both our sakes! All three of Us were crying when dad left
  • This is exactly what my baby girl did at 4 days old. We had her Dr appointment the next day, so I brought it up to him. He said that after 20 minutes, she should have gotten what she needed milk-wise, and was just using me as a pacifier. He told me to give her a pacifier. She also caused so much damage to my nipple that I had to completely stop nursing for about 4 days (I could only pump) and now I have to heavily supplement.

Now I nurse her for 20 minutes (both sides of she'll go for it) then if she is still rooting, I'll supplement with an ounce of formula. If she continues to root, I give her a pacifier. She is 2 weeks old today.
  • I had a night like that with my first. It was very hard but only the one night. Babies know what they need and cluster feeding is how your baby tells your body to make more milk the next day. As long as baby is having good diaper output it is definitely cluster feeding. Cluster feeding in the evenings is quite common, hopefully the overnight version was only a one time thing or maybe baby's internal clock is a little off- maybe try encouraging baby to cluster feed in the evening instead and see if overnight sleep improves.
  • Is your LO swallowing? You may not have a good latch so he may not be getting any milk, leading him to be unsatisfied.
