Baby #2 and DS bed

Hey ladies!

DH & I were talking and the topic about a toddler bed vs. crib came up.  When #2 is born, DS will have just turned 2.  What do you experienced moms recommend when it comes to bedding?  Do we buy another crib and keep them both in cribs, or should we switch DS to a Toddler bed?  We're only discussing this so early because Target is having a baby sale and I love any excuse to shop!

All opinions/advice welcome and TIA!!

Re: Baby #2 and DS bed

  • It really depends on what y'all think. My daughter's (she's 1) crib is already converted to a toddler bed...only because she was climbing out of it. We are going to get a regular toddler bed closer time and use the crib as the babies crib. Toddler beds tend to be cheaper which means money saving! With your Ds going to be 2 he may be ready for it, he may be ready before then. Make sure to find one with the side things to prevent him from rolling out of the bed and I would suggest getting him use to it before the baby is here so that he is comfortable with the bed.
  • I'd definitely say toddler bed. I know lots of people who moved their toddlers that early due to new babies coming. Another crib, IMO, would be a waste of money. Plus, by then your son may have figured out how to climb out of his crib!

  • We are making his crib a toddler bed our ds next month and in June (when he's two) we will buy him a new big boy bed. I'm dreading this move because little man loves his crib and will just play in there in the morning while I shower.
  • My opinion is keep him in the crib as long as you can!!!!! No need to rush it. When he starts climbing out then you transition. One less thing to worry about.
  • Honestly IMO if you think your 2yr old is ready to go to a toddler bed then for sure transition him. Although like a PP stated it is best to keep them in a crib as long as you can. We didn't change our oldest son till he turned 3.

  • We are in the same boat and wondering the same thing! DD will be 23 months when #2 arrives. Right now I am leaning towards buying a second inexpensive crib because I started thinking about the idea of DD coming into our room at night and waking us up, which is the last thing I would want with a newborn! So as long as she hasn't figured out how to get out we may keep her in there as long as we can! On the other hand, those toddler beds are awfully cute!!! :)
  • DS is 2.5 and still in a crib. He hasn't tried to climb out and I plan to keep him in his crib for as long as possible! That said, I know it's probably only a matter of time before he tries to climb out, at which point it won't be safe anymore. Even if he isn't climbing out by August, we'll probably bite the bullet and put him in a big boy bed. It would be a pretty big waste of money to buy a new crib only to transition DS a couple months later.

We are going to go straight to a twin and skip the toddler bed though.

  • Separate beds. Lol. My kids all end up my bed- newborn, toddler's, whatever. I always make sure I have a pack n play assembled, and an available crib. And u bet ur ass that ur toddler is gonna be up in ur bed with the new baby. Comes with the territory. Enjoy!!!!!
  • When our 2nd came along we switched our 16mo to a toddler bed and he did fantastically. Some of my friends are having a harder time with their los, but we put our guy in there awake and if he wants to play in his room without us we let him. We keep the door closed and a baby gate at the door so he doesn't escape in the middle of the night
  • We moved #1 to a toddler bed at 20months, about a month before #2 came. We didn't want to invest in another crib... #1 did well with the transition and I'm glad we gave him time to get used to it before #2 arrived.

  • I'm in the same boat. DS is going to be 19 months when LO is born and his crib converts into a toddler bed. The logical thing is probably to buy a toddler bed since they seem to be slightly cheaper than a crib.

  • The new baby will sleep in a RNP for several months, more than 6 most likely, so I won't be in a rush to kick DD out of her crib.  She'll be 2.5 by the time I'm ready to move LO into a crib, so I'll probably do a toddler bed or even mattress on the floor.
  • At 18 months we converted DS's crib into a toddler bed because this kid was climbing out of his crib and trying to throw himself over. Thankfully I would see this on the monitor and would run in and catch him before he got hurt. He's really tall for his age, so he was able to get out of their with no problem. We converted the crib to the toddler bed and now he get in and out easily since it's so low to the ground. I feel way more at ease now since there is no trust falling from the crib happening now!

With the arrival of baby #2, we already got DS a really cool "big boy bed" (I found a great, barely used twin trundle bed that a friend of ours was getting rid of with a guard rail). We already have it in the other room and have been getting DS excited about sleeping in his new bed, in his new room. Initially baby#2 will sleep in my room in the pack n' play next to me and DS will stay in his room in the toddler bed. Little by little we will work on transitioning him into his new room with his big boy bed and as Baby#2 gets bigger I'll start transitioning he/she into the nursery with the crib.

  • Our first moved to a twin bed with a rail around 22 months.  She did great (although still had a bad sleep schedule).

I think for this one we are hoping to keep older one in the crib for a few months with baby in our room.  When he goes to a big boy bed, he will be moving into his big sisters room.  So its not only a new bed but also learning to share a room.  So we want him to be a bit older.
